New Project...Mini ColecoVision...Finished!

For anybody else who wouldn't go over $50 for a Mini ColecoVision, let me a share a bit with you. This is the quote I received from the manufacturer for just the "case" which houses the Mini ColecoVision. That doesn't take into account all of the modifications (time/labor/A/V/S-Video jacks/buttons/overlays/ColecoVision PCB/standoffs/cut-outs/cartridge slot door) I had to make to the case, just the enclosure itself in it's stock form:

 

 

Also bear in mind that I orderd only (1) case.

I'm not quite sure what its going to sell for (kind of surprised to see it this high already), but I could venture a guess as to what its not going to sell for less than.

If its any consolation to you, I wouldn't go over $50 for it. Suckers are born everyday though.

 

He put more than $50 of new parts and labor into it.

I can see both sides of this situation. When you build something, you would like to at least recover your materiel costs as well as something for time and effort. Others, however, may not share your level of enthusiasm for your creation. I fall into that camp. While I think that you did an incredible job building your system, I have no interest in buying one for myself. I already have a Colecovision that I don't use, so I see no reason to buy another. So for me, it is not the money as much as it is a lack of interest/need for it. They could sell for $20 and I probably would not buy one. All that being said, congrats again on a great job with your project and if you happen to build something that I am interested it, I may be first in line to get one.

Maybe I am a sucker, but the attention to detail on doubledown's work makes it worth every penny to me.

I own a few pieces of doubledown's work and it is exceptional. Of course what something is 'worth' to someone is always a variable, but people often do not understand the economies of scale and amount of work involved in small, or single run type operations. It is often hard to pay people a 'fair wage' amount for fine work, and many in the classic community are eating a large amount of cost involved in labor and sometimes even materials on their projects.

 

Of course, you already know that.

Hell the case was more than $50.00. Then add the buttons, audio and video jacks, heatsinks, VDP, all of the connectors/pins/sockets/wire, the doner ColecoVision, hardware (black metric screws and matching nylock nuts) and the chrome foil for the overlays, and yes this console "cost" a hell of a lot more than $50.00. Not to mention I consider my time to be worth a little something.

How about an accurate translation, "You did a really good job designing and building it, but it is not something that I am interested in."

 

I can appreciate talent, even when I am not interested in the final product. Like with the custom portables that people have been making. They look neat and took skill to design and build, but I am not interested in owning one.

I can understand why people would want to spend the least money possible for older technology, but you can't just pull these projects out of thin air. They do cost money, and they do take time, especially when you're building them by hand and not taking them from an assembly line.

Three dollars, not bad. Mine cost over $22.00. Granted mine are rated for a "minimal" life of over 200,000 cycles (1,000,000 cylcles on the reset button because it's momentary). That means if you turned it On and Off 10 times a day, every day, it'll last at least 54.79 years, YEARS! (273.97 years on the reset button if pressed 10 times a day every day). What can I say, nothings too good for me or my customers!

Look, I think the project is really cool and double down on 11 does awesome work but the pricing seems rediculous to me. Besides I'm perfecly happy with full size CV's I find around here.
