Is the "new" Coleco still around?

Recommended Posts

The last press release on their web site is from October 2006 (almost 2 years ago!).

The list of games on the site also looks dated. In fact, the whole web site looks pretty dated at this point.....

Hey, "Coleco", don't do my employer any favors, y'know?

Seriously, this ain't the old Coleco. Some people bought the old company, probably not realizing that, aside from generic sports titles and some generic sports handhelds, Coleco owned only a few games that they made for the arcade or home systems.

Back in the day, licensing was where it was at...until Nintendo smartened up and decided to take personal control of both the home gaming and arcade gaming markets.

Once that happened, Coleco lost its mealticket...and the rest is history.

River West Brands obtained the rights to Coleco about 4 or 5 years ago.

I thought that Hasbro owned the rights to coleco (since coleco were bought out by hasbro in the mid 80s;)

Hasbro dumped a lot of properties that weren't going to make them a lot of money.

 "Wait for it, peeps..."

:D Y'know, like Atari.

 "And we have predictable lame joke. Back to your regularly scheduled thread."

Here's an "interesting" interview with the heads of River West Brands.

River West Brands interview

They basically rip the Colecovision every chance they get. They rip on the power switch. They rip on the number of cords it has. I mean, are these things really that different from a modern console? They seemingly barely even know how to turn it on.

It's interesting business strategy -- buy brand, trash brand publicly, profit. Should be interesting to see how that works out for them. Certainly changes my view of what they're trying to do, that's for sure.

Like I said in my original question though, it almost seems like they might have already abandoned the brand based on the lack of news and new products....
