Is my 2600 Jr. having hardware problem?

Recommended Posts

I'm asking this, as my 2600 Jr. doesn't display games correctly compared to my Light Sixer and Vader 2600s. The problem is that certain colors are completely altered, for example, Pole Position's sky is purple instead of blue. It doesn't affect all colors, but it really doesn't make the games look right. Is this the TIA chip failing?

Is this a new problem or have the units colors always been off?

You may be able to take the unit apart and slightly tweak the colors by turning the pot to the left of the sheet metal RF shield. If you do take it apart, easy does it because the JRs have 3 tabs in the front that tend to hold the unit together and then there is a ribbon cable inside that also must be slipped out of the main board.

Sounds like the chroma pot is almost certainly out of adjustment. You don't need to take the console apart to adjust it.

A Junior console has 2 round holes and a widened slot (slightly wider circular opening superimposed on the narrow oval slot) in the case bottom allowing access to all 3 adjustments without opening the case. The chroma pot is nearest to the power switch, accessible through the widened slot (mid left side if you position the unit so the molded-in "Fuji" logo on the bottom is right side up), and can be turned with a small straight blade screwdriver. I strongly recommend that you don't try to turn the two adjustable parts accessible through the circular holes -- they're for the sound and video, and can be difficult to set right without proper equipment if tampered with.

The colors were off from the first day I got the 2600 Jr(mid 2007). I will give the POT adjustment a run later today.

I had the same problem with a Sears Video Arcade and sure enough, the color pot was the problem. A slight turn was all it needed to get things back to normal.

Yep, and sure enough, that was the problem on my end. Thank you all. My 2600 Jr. now works the way it should.
