Atari 800 Help

Recommended Posts

I usually stick to collecting game consoles, but couldn't resist picking up an Atari 800 with 48k RAM (bare cards) at a garage sale. Two questions:

1) Any ideas on where I can pick up a 9VAC supply?

2) How can I get inside? I took the screws off of the bottom but the case doesn't seem to give. (I didn't want to force too hard.)

Thanks so much for the help.

You are welcome, congrats on the purchase.

1) ebay $14.95 all day long apparently. I don't have a favorite here, other non-store sellers would most likey sell one cheaper if that is your thing, point is to search for "Atari Power Supply" at ebay. The one you need is 9 Volt AC at 31 VA (watts) or 3.44 amps, it also runs all the disk drives and 1200XL.

2) Turn upside down and remove 5 matching screws. Work the bottom off while still upside down. Remove 3 more matching screws and turn right side up on your lap. Press door latch above keys 7, 8, and 9. Find two latches to undo. Slide opened door and connected ribbed section up and forward to you in order to reveal your memory boards - remove them all to lift up and work off the top case. You will have to sneak a hand in there and unplug the keyboard at the very least along with some more flipping around. Tricky part is going back together again after you do what you went in there for.

Going into one deeper requires removing the aluminum plate on the bottom held on by screws and 4 plastic rivets held in place by a central pin that needs poked out to release it's hold. You'll figure it out when you see them. Then you pop the plastic memory board insert loose by pushing it's feet latches loose. Not the easiest one to work on, but still fascinating. Enjoy.
