Scariest (home console) video games of all time?

Recommended Posts

I was just curious what you guys thought the scariest video games for any home console are? For example, I think a lot of people would say the Resident Evil series for the PSX, or maybe Silent Hill for the PSX; I definitely say Silent Hill as far as the creepy/suspense factor.

Also, are "Haunted House" and "Ghost Manor" it for the 2600 console as far as fitting into this category? I know a guy is working on "Ravenous Dead", but it isn't out yet, so I didn't include it with the other two 2600 carts.

I am looking forward to your responses!

I am the "Ravenous Dead" guy, and yup, the game's not nearly complete. I wouldn't list it.

As for scariest game FOR THE 2600 (to keep it on-topic), I'd have to say "Halloween" is pretty cool. Blood gushing from neck stumps, Michael swinging a knife, and the eerie theme all add up to a pretty tense 2600 experience.

Haunted House will also startle you if you play it in the dark with the sound up.

I always found Haunted House to be a bit spooky. And Adventure for some reason when you are young can be scary played in the dark with the threat of fast snapping dragons as you round each corner of the labyrinth.

But the scariest 2600 game of all. The 2600 Pac Man port. Scared me into thinking the video game market was going to crash :)

If you're talking modern gaming, the Library Level on Halo.

As far as classic gaming, Tunnel Runner was quite eerie, especially on the invisible maps. Just the sound of a Grey, White or Red Zot passing by would send you into a panic.  :o

I'm surprised it's taken this long to mention Jaguar AvP, probably the scariest Atari game of all time. Dracula for the Lynx comes in a close second though.

Atari's History of Horror Article at TAThttp://www.ataritimes.com/features/fea_atarihorror.html

nice article, now I feel guilty for linking to a non-Atari exclusive review,

I did read your article when it first came out but it slipped my mind today :)

Despite the number of times I've played it, an evening game of Haunted House can still make me jump, especially when I run straight into one the house's lurking denizens.

Frankenstein's Monster, although based on a horror theme, isn't particularly scary. Still, ya just gotta love it when the big blue guy takes over the screen when you lose! :P

I agree with the inclusion of AvP. In terms of modern games, the PC AvP titles can definitely make you jump out of your skin. Wandering around, waiting for the next alien to jump out can get pretty nerve wracking!

You guys are listing some really good games that either slipped my mind or I didn't know about at all. I am new to this webpage, so if I repeat things that have been said here before, please excuse me.

The Pac Man comment is too true. I remember looking forward to it coming out for the 2600 and finally buying it, only to be disappointed.

Hey Sniderman, I had no clue you were the programmer behind "Ravenous Dead." Did you release your "Blair Witch" game? I would love a copy of that if they are still available.

Keep 'em coming in folks.

I don't know if it counts as scary but my heart always starts to beat faster when I can hear but can't see the dragon (or the troll or the bear) while playing Intellivision AD&D (Cloudy Mountain).

For other systems not mentioned yet, I'd include:

TG 16 - Splatterhouse

NES - Chiller

As a kid, many years ago, I was always freaked out by Star Raiders late at night, with the lights off. When in that last battle, and your ship gets destroyed, I always freaked out. Horrible feeling.

Those 3 lone tones always made me uneasy.

Scariest moment in a game for me is when you are attacked by the Cobra fleet in Solaris. You sit there waiting for them to attack. I always jump a little when they fly out of both sides of the screen and start firing.

I rented Fatal Frame for the PS2. That game is creepy as hell. And you don't get a gun. But it was so scary that my Girlfriend wouldn't let me turn the lights off that night.

Wasn't there a game for the Intellivision (I never had one) that featured Dracula or a vampire or something? Am I imagining thiungs or could you actually play the role of the vampire?

Also, there seemed to be a game my buddy had for the 3DO system that was pretty creepy. It was like a modern day "Haunted House" type premise, going around finding stuff?

"How could you forget me? I'm hurt. (sniff)"

Oh yea! That alien popping up always scared the heck out of me, back in the day.

When I was a kid, Frankenstein's Monster always frightened me. When I lost, I would try to turn off the system or restart the game as fast as possible so I wouldn't see the monster start walking toward the screen with the creepy music in the background. To this day, I still catch myself avoiding that part of the game out of habit. :ponder:

Two words: Bow-ling. That is scarry.

My vote goes to Haunted House, I used to scare myself silly when I was 13 or so playing this, I had never seen anything like it at the time.....
