slampam
While watching JAWS I wondered what’s that cool shark arcade game that kid’s playing in the background. Far better graphics than any video game should look and sound in 1975. Killer Shark Sega 1972. Not a video game at all: Electro-mechanical. Light pulses through a translucent “daedalum” disk as it spins with the painted images of a writhing shark. An 8-track creates the background sound effects. I remember these shooter games with Out of Order signs tucked in the corner of many of an arcade. Even as I couldn’t play them, their repeating 4-track stereo soundtracks alone made Berzerk’s “chicken, fight like a robot” seem childish by comparison. Showing once again, dead end technology was often better. Emehr
Cool. Thanks for sharing that. Jaws is one of my favorite movies and that shark game always caught my eye. I always wondered how it worked.
iwan-iwanowitsch-goratschin
After I have seen the screenshots I would say that the name should be Killer Goldfish instead of Killer Shark!
arcadebasement
I believe it was also re-released with the "Jaws" logo on it - have to check, could be my dodgy old memory as I remember playing the original when it was released. [edit] note the Computer space in the Jaws screencap! Edited September 2, 2008 by arcadebasement
rxd
I remember playing that game way back when! It sure was cool for the time. I completely forgot about it until I read this thread. I had no idea how they made those graphics work until I read some of those links. Fascinating....
NE146
Yeah I know about this game.. first of all it is actually one of my first major arcade memories where my family was at an amusement park and I walked into their arcade, my dad lifted me up to play this game and while he held me there I was just shooting randomly, and seeing the shark blood spurt whenever I made a hit. I remember asking my dad to lift me to play again because the game always seemed to end very quickly Of course later on when I saw it in Jaws it jogged my memory totally of it. arcadebasement
Here's a vid of the game port that was posted in the OP : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ml_epQok7bs It definitely isn't working properly as the 'squeak' from the shark only happened when you hit him and you couldn't hit him nearly enough times to make that racket. Seems like a lazy flash job sadly. So here's a vid of the game in action... from the inside! Also, you can see how much more menacing the game is when played in the dark. Note the movement in water - amazing really. Unfortunately it looks like the 'death scene' disk is not spinning so the shark dies on a single frame instead of animating. slampam feel free to add these links to your OP if you want. Bountybob
I used to play it or at least a variant of it on the West Coast of Ireland when I was about 5 around 1976.I was only a nipper and like someone else here (LOL) had to be held up to play it. At that age I used to find any coin operated machine exciting like the coin slides, the horse racing machine with the little horses going around the track and even the little bubble gum and gift machines where you had to click the little mechanism around with the coin in it .The other EM machine I remember seeing quite a bit around that time was the one in the Haunted House where things would pop up like Witches and Skeletons and you had to shot them.Air Hockey was fun and pinball too. It was quite a wonderous time and it would be a couple of years before I got to play Space Invaders but it really didn't matter. In fact when I first played Space Invaders I found it quite boring but that was to change. arcadebasement
Some great pics here slampam http://marvin3m.com/arcade/shark.htm Along with a schematic manual. http://www.pingeek.com/killer/killer.htm Finally, on the link below there's a clip of the game as shown in Jaws. Shows the actual game in much better rez than any other clip I've seen. http://bavatuesdays.com/killer-shark-1972/

dj10555
Awesome work Slampam. You have collated all the info on this game really well! I own a couple of Sega EM games but the Killer Shark is one of the rarer ones to find. I am currently restoring a Sega Motochamp and am looking for a few parts. Does anyone remember this game? Regards Derek
slampam
Finally looked up the word "collated". I think it's a compliment. Any chance on posting some of those restoration pics? dj10555?
