Your smallest and largest consoles/portables

Recommended Posts

OK, I was thinking of this.

My smallest portable is my PocketStation. Yeah, I know, it doesn't take carts or discs, but it does have a selection of games you can download to it. Innit smaller than a GB micro?

My largest portable is my Lynx II. Of course, a skateboard (Lynx I) would be bigger, but that's what I've got. Dunno how it compared to the phat PSP weight wise, but both seem heavy.

Smallest console is probably my Genesis 3. Largest is my 5200. Pretty simple there.

While we're at it, does anyone have any particularly large or small PC gaming hardware? I've got a couple of good size video cards (voodoo 5 5500's) that extend almost into the machines' drive bays. By contrast, my Aureal Vortex II is a pretty small sound card.

My smallest portable is one of those tiny, simple McDonalds happy meal games (no cartridges, though). My largest? Either the Virtual Boy or the Vectrex, if you can count that, although it does plug in. There was also a portable Commodore 64 with a built-in screen that was pretty huge (can't remember what it's called).

Largest? How about a Game Genie plugged into a Power Base Converter (with 3D glasses plugged in) plugged into a 32X plugged into a Genny (with a menacer hooked up) on top of a Sega CD? :P Weight-wise, it might be heaver than a 5200. This is just theory at this point; could it even be done?

Colecovision Adam with VCS Expansion pack (and required printer) is pretty heavy too, and also bigger than 5200, even with a trackball. When it comes to PCs, the range is huge.

I guess I go gameboy micro through lynx 2. (or virtual boy if that counts)

and for consoles, I go retro duo through genesis1/32x/cd1 (unless my MVS cabinet counts)

I've got a Mac SE. It's got some games and a handle on it. Bloody heavy.

At work we used to have a Star Trek text-based game running on a PDP-11 on wheels, and you could set the VT100 on top before rolling it down to the elevator. Bet it was heavier.

First time I've heard of that. Looks like a good one to add to my collection if I ever find one, being officially the smallest ever (so far).

wow, smaller than a PocketStation? Then again, the Pokemon thing is the smallest cart based handheld, but the PocketStation doesn't use carts. Instead, games are "saved" to it from their parent PS1 games.

Smallest console: Playstation original grey

Largest console: Amiga CD32 - I guess overall it's a fraction larger in volume than the 7800 and a good deal heavier.

Smallest handheld: Gameboy

Largest handheld: Atari Lynx II (isn't the Lynx probably the largest handheld ever?)

Smallest portable: Original Game Boy

Largest portable: Original Game Boy

Smallest console: Genesis model-2

Largest console: Genesis model-1, or maybe the 7800.

Yeah, I've got a great range.

Largest video hardware: Technically not for gaming, but I feel I must mention the HP Visualize FX4+ video card (OpenGL accelerator from a P2-era Xeon machine). Full length card consisting of 2 boards, covered in a huge passive heatsink, requires a proprietary mounting bracket to hold it up. It's as big as some people's laptops.

If you put it in a standard case it would probably break the AGP socket, and if not that I fear the power draw would melt a standard motherboard.

It's powered by 4 HP PA-RISC CPU's. Has I think 18MB of memory (all for flat shaded polygons) and allows an 18MB expansion for textures.

Sadly, it sucks at everything except OpenGL and there's no Linux support, so I don't use it.

The one thing I've always wanted to try with it is to get the 3D goggles it's supposed to support. It might be funny to play OpenGL DOOM with VR goggles on.

Don't feel too bad. I once considered buying a 3D Labs Oxygen, which was two full length (over 12 inches) cards, one AGP and one PCI both with quite a few heatsinks.

<brag mode is ON>

My largest card that I use for gaming is a modded Voodoo 5 5500. It has active cooling on the front and back of the card, and additional ramsinks. It's the standard size of a V5, but it's now about three inches thick and sticks well into the #1 PCI slot. Because of this, I made a custom back plate for the #1 PCI slot which now houses the external audio connections for the Audigy 1 card in that same computer. Even worse, I've seen Voodoo 5 cards with K7 coolers on them. Such cards are usually clocked to around 180 to 220 MHz. Mine ran 1998 Sega Rally at 186MHz with the blue orb chipset coolers, but I toned it down to 176 or so to keep UT '99 happy. I also enabled a lot of the card's BIOS features including AGP 2x and fast write support. Needless to say, that's one quick Voodoo...

</brag>

I passed on the Oxygen when they told me it was on sale for close to $100.
