rxd #1 Posted September 18, 2008 So I finally picked up Halo and gave it a try today. So what's so great about this game? I got to the point where I'm in the cave driving the warthog (that has totally stupid controls). Now where the heck is the switch for that bridge? I'm walking around aimlessly and can't find it. But besides that, why all the love for this game? I thought Half Life 2 was much better, at least from what I've seen so far.....

+Random Terrain #3 Posted September 18, 2008 I don't get it either. I love the Half Life 2 world for the most part. Feels like something that could really happen in an F-ed up future timeline. Halo isn't even good enough to shine the shoes of Half Life 2.
rxd #4 Posted September 18, 2008 (edited) Are you talking about Halo or Halo 3? Halo. I'm stuck pretty much as soon as you get on Halo. I actually picked up all 3 but figured I'd start with the first one, but I'm stuck already... Edited September 18, 2008 by rxd

I picked up Halo 3 because all my friends have it... i said what the hell, i might as well find out what all the fuss is about. Turns out i really like the game... Even it's funking warthog steering. Practice, you'll get it. I really don't understand why made the controls so different. weird! I still play it 2 or 3 times a week online in 2 hour sessions. -rick
Albert #6 Posted September 18, 2008 Yeah, it's not really that great of a game in my opinion. Visually it was stunning when first unveiled, back when it was going to be a Mac game before Microsoft bought it. At one point it really gets repetitive, while battling "The Flood" (or whatever it's called). I enjoyed it, and I like the Sci-Fi setting (although don't like the "horror" game it turned into), but nothing spectacular. I started into Halo 2 (probably about halfway) and need to finish so I can play Halo 3. ..Al

moycon #8 Posted September 18, 2008 (edited) I'll assume you ment Halo 3 since this is the Xbox 360 forum. Half Life 2 has a deeper story line for sure (Although the were several times while playing I just wished it would end....tends to drag in parts) Still....The campaign in HL2 definitely blows Halo away. Thing is. Halo is all about something else entirely and somthing Half Life 2 doesn't offer. Online gaming. You don't have any co-op in Half-Life 2 much less 4 player co-op. If you haven't played Halo 3 through on Legendary settings with 3 of your pals from around the country, you missed the point of the game. Halo 3 offers you so much more after the campaign is over. Half Life doesn't have any multiplayer at all. Halo has all the traditional (Slayer, Team Slayer, Capture the Flag) and some cool fun games you might not be used to (Oddball, Infection, King of the Hill, Juggernaut) all with up to 16 people playing. This is where Halo 3 excels. (Although like I said 4 player co-op on a harder setting makes the campaign MUCH better, I've played through the champaign 3 times and would do it again just because it's so fun to go through it with you buddies. Half Life 2 sits on the shelf. i've played through it twice. (Mainly for the achievements) The second time through was boring. If you bought Halo to play a FPS campaign by yourself and for no other reason. I hope you got a good price for the game because you had much better choices if that was the case. Half Life 2 doesn’t offer the re-playability a Halo game offers. Hell there’s a lot it’s lacking when you compare the two. To say "Halo isn't even good enough to shine the shoes of Half Life 2" is ignorant. . but then again that would make sense since Random doesn't own a 360 and hasn't played Halo 3. EDIT : Ooops you ment Halo. I dunno. To be honest I never got into Halo or Halo 2 much. Edited September 18, 2008 by moycon
+remowilliams #9 Posted September 18, 2008 All I have to say, is that if you aren't playing Halo (any version) with a buddy in co-op campaign player mode, you haven't played the game at all.

moycon #13 Posted September 19, 2008 (edited) Yeah, Halo 3 might be better than sex for all I know, but Halo 1 and Halo 2 stink compared to Half Life 2. I suspect all FPS had advanced somewhat since 2001 when Halo was released. What exactly is the point of comparing a game that was released 3 years later? (Actually more like 6 years later if you only want to count console releases) Seems a given it's going to look better and be more polished. Can you guys name any games similar to Halo that were released the same year as Halo that in comparison make it 'stink" or is this a situation where we only compare newer technically superior games to older games? If that IS the case then..... Guy whats the big deal with Atari 2600 Adventure? What a piece of crap that is hu? It totally stinks compared to Oblivion!!!! It's not just that it has better graphics, it has a better game world. It has a cool atmosphere and the world seems more 'realistic' and not as cartoony. The characters in Halo are ridiculous. Too many silly-looking Disney or Nintendo-ish looking aliens and the game world isn't as cool. It feels like everything in Halo was created by committee to make sure the maximum number of people would like it instead of just making something cool. moycon #15 Posted September 19, 2008 It has a cool atmosphere and the world seems more 'realistic' and not as cartoony. So basically in those 3 years the artists found the brown pallet? Nice! You probably wouldn't enjoy Halo 3 then. The pinks and purples are still present. Personally, after dozens and dozens of "brown" games, a splash of color isn't a bad thing in my book. Add all the color you want, but I hate ugly, cartoony, Nintendoish characters and the feeling like the game was made by committee. I'm sure most games are made that way, but some games seem to shake off the stench of boring suits in a room around a conference table.

Its obvious that other gamers in 2001 felt the same way. Sure, Halo sold 5 million+ copies, but no doubt every one of those sales was made due to a devious advertising campaign that no-one could refuse. (They probably left out the color and the aliens) Those damn suits cooked up the ads, you can bet!!! Seriously, I never really got into the first Halos myself. I played most of the way through the campaign of Halo and dropped it before the end. I never had my original Xbox hooked up to Live but based on the fact people were still playing Halo 2 on Live when the 360 was released (and even to this day) and from what I've heard from friends. If you haven't played it online, you haven't played it. Unlike say Half Life 2, Halo's about much more than just the campaign. So if that's all you've played, you might want to get an internet connection, get a 360 and try it again with others.

Artlover #22 Posted September 19, 2008 Nobody knows where the switch is to extend the bridge in Halo 1? Telling you kind of defeats the point, don't you think. Anywho.... After you come out of the tunnel, looking towards the bridge - look right. There is a small ramp back in there that leads up to catwalk that leads to the switch. rxd #23 Posted September 19, 2008 I finally found the stupid passage to the switch. Why do games makers think it's fun to make everything so dark that it's virtually impossible to find something unless you happen to stumble across it while looking in the perfect direction? This has happened to me so many times in various games. Does anyone actually enjoy doing this? Well onward now truing to save humanity....

Shannon #25 Posted September 19, 2008 Halo is definitely one of those games where the fun factor increases when playing co-op! My wife and I played thru a good portion together until one day our son managed to get a hold of the controller and play it. He was playing like a pro! I ended up finishing the campaign mode with him.
