WTB/WTT Genesis model 1 **without** Hi Def Graphics logo

Recommended Posts

Need this for a project of mine, and the one *without* the high definition graphics logo is preferred. also has a monochrome Genesis logo *not* the two tone gray one. Afaik, these aren't in very high demand and people tend to throw them away. The one redeeming quality that I see is that the little red plastic part where the power LED sits is seperate and can be replaced with another piece of plastic.

Minor scratches okay, just no large ones. Sticker goo okay. No controllers or hookups needed, but known good console is a must. Please PM me if you have this thing and you need it gone. I trade, too, lemme see what I can come up with.

That rumor about throwing them away again... I only ever hear that from you (not trashing on you or your thread) they sell easily for me generally for $25ish without any problems. I'm just saying, I've never heard of anyone throwing a Genesis away other than your posts. Is it just a hate of Genesis in your region? The local Mom & Pop shops here in Tennessee can't keep them in stock.

people are throwing away Genesis's? I have a model 3 and have been playing with it for a few months and I love it (I was always a sworn follower of the SNES but IMO while the SNES has some games that are way beyond anything for the Genesis the Genesis overall has a more interesting library if that makes sense). I would like a model 1 or 2 though for the stereo sound and perhaps one day getting a 32x now if I can just find these people throwing their Genesis's away!!!!

It's good discussion, and I guess I might just choose to see the worst in people. I do see them for sale, but most of the time I see them being given away or bundled with something Nintendo or computer related. They do NOT sell well on their own around here, or in my part of Tennessee when I lived there (Carthage, midways between Nashville and Lebanon).

Ax, this isn't any kind of trashing, and good points. I got a Gen2 from a member here for the price of shipping, else it was gonna get trashed. I got that one in a hurry. Whenever I see the consoles cheap, I tend to pick them up and see if I can find them homes, now I'll step it up a notch. See how many I can "rescue."

Warriors, when I see either a model 1 or 2 I'll snag it and get it to you as cheap as possible. Right now there are two on the chuckwagon, decently priced, that need good homes.

I'm not really sure, it might be that since they were so common and there really are a lot of them around still, they get dis-counted as a viable game system. It's now my favorite game system, that's for sure. I do know what you mean about having a larger library; looking back, Nintendo has a couple of really nice games with all the bells and whistles, good graphics, fast movement, but the Genesis has just more games to it that are good.

I have Wing Commander for the SNES, but when I tried to play it, game play just fell short; not a good console port, maybe, cause I used to have all kinds of fun on a 386 with that game back in the day. Faceball 2000 is another one, and I have a feeling that if it were released on the Genesis it would have been a better experience playing.

Maybe it's a hype thing, cause Nin had lots of advertising and the Gen didn't that I remember. Mario was plastered everywhere, and I remember a little bit of exposure to the Genesis commercials, but not much.

/edit Warriors, whenyou get a model 1 or even a model 2, you'll see a difference. Especially if you get a stereo sound cable for the headphone jack.

Right now I have the mono sound split, but yea I imagine true stereo would be so much better. I have no idea why they would ship a console with mono sound in it's third revision, when the other two had stereo!? One great thing about the model 3 is it's tiny.

I think I might have one. The model 1's keep popping up now and again at the local flea market. Kind of strange since everyone I knew had the genesis 2. I'll check later today on whether or not it's the right type.

Well, the last one I had (console only) I offered it for shipping and got 2 responses. That was it.

The one before (console/hookups) that I put on craiglist and ONE person responded with an offer that was half my $25 asking price. I got the last laugh on that one though because I talked HIM back up to an even $13.

I've personally chucked at least 5 bare genny consoles I've got in large lots of video game stuff cause they are not even worth the price of shipping to give them away. Seriously for a bare console, if I could get $5 bucks for a genesis model 1 or 2 I'd sell in a heart beat but I couldn't even get that so they meet the trash compactor.

When my Genny model 1 died last year, someone here on AA gave me one for free to replace it. I was shocked at how undervalued they are at the moment, but it makes me wonder if they'll become collectors items someday. Give it 20 more years...

With all hook ups, controllers, etc.. they are worth money, not a lot but they are far from trash. I would say $10-$20 plus reasonable shipping charges, more on the $20 side with the A/V cable instead of RF.

Bare bones consoles are junk though, who wants to track all the extras down when you can get a complete system at such a great price :)

IMHO whatthe Genesis needs is something to make it more valuable. Something to give it an edge over what else is out there, so people will want them more. A neat online ability would rock, and with embedded ethernet prices dropping (for some time now) something could be made easily to give it the ability to go and have at least minimal online capability.

It could be a cart/cable package deal. Ethernet connector to jack into the router, and a game that's programed specifically to access the second pad port (or ext port, if a model 1) to send data and receive it.

>sigh< school and work has taken over most of my time at the moment, but I have an idea if nothing else. I have a few friend that I could probably persuade to help on something like this. Especially if I could get it done cheaply.

I was talking about it here: Vintage-Computer. Other places, too, but that's where I reported most of my findings.

Here, too.

$10 bucks for a setup is about right. Then you gotta find someone who wants to buy it and then pay to ship it which is as much as the setup is worth. Genny package deals are good sellers but just a console and say sonic 2? Not so much.

To let everyone know, there are homes out there for bare consoles. I have a friend that has a son who is autistic, and he loves video games. Parents like her are willing to ship in parts and pieces (console, controllers, etc) as long as it costs less than say, an Xbox 360. And last I checked, all of those items apart with shipping cost less than that thing.

Also, if you donate your consoles to charity, you get to write it off on taxes; and know that you are helping out some poor kid's hand-eye coordination.

For real, send a few emails to those charities that help and work with those kids, and they'll work with you. Then they'll be the ones doing the shipping/receiving, packaging and delivering them to the kids that can use them before you trash them.

I asked around for a model 1 about a month or so ago. Having read on these forums that people were just throwing them away because they couldn't trade or sell them had given me the same general perception of their value as you have. I was offering $20 for one, but no one was willing to sell me one anywhere near that price, so I figured I was misinformed as to their value. But now this thread seems to be confirming that my initial impressions of Genny values were correct. :?

I've taken my own advice. I have emailed a handful of charity orgs, to see if some of these consoles can be given homes, with or without accessories as long as they work and things can be had in the wild. Below is the email I have sent and to whom I have sent them:

Hello,

Would the kids enjoy a few classic video games? I am a classic game lover, and lots of different game consoles go to the trash because they don't have homes. some are incomplete and need accessories, but they are always easy to find cheaply.

Would your people be interested in getting these consoles, even if they are missing accessories that can be gotten later, and giving them to the kids that don't have any? The only thing I ask in return is a receipt for donation to a charity.

Thanks!

There's no obligation, but if you have a working console that's a bit beat up, or missing something to work, see if there's something local to you so you don't have shipping to pay. El Paso has the Child Crisis Resale Shop. They sell the stuff for money, but some of it gets to the kids.

Chris, I have to defend the ups and downs of the pricing, but not the trashing of them. Prices do vary in a crazy way, and there's timing you have to take into consideration. Just like a thrift store, you gotta be there in time to get it! Be persistent, it'll come.

Sorry, I didn't mean to get all preachy and I think I sounded reproachful. Sorry about that everyone. I'm still gonna see what the people I emailed say back, if they're interested. They might not be, who knows. I just hate to hear of consoles getting trashed for any reason.

BTW I think SEgamer has one that fits the bill.

Just replied back to your PM nathan, sorry for the delay

I never knew they were in demand that much, so I'll be on the lookout for them this weekend.

I'd pay $5 shipped... the problem is you are in Canada :) I sell them all day long for $20 - $30 on the local level. I can't get enough. Weird. People chuck 2600's around here, and they are gold online.

I've secured and bought one already, but thanks for the offer. Got a package deal from SEgamer. If I need another, I'll know who to ask.

I was thinking about how to "dress it up" last night. I think the word O V E R C L O C K E D would look good replacing the high definition graphics logo around the rim. Let me fully explain why I want this particular model of Genesis.

That seperate plastic bezel around the LED can be made into a lighted LED panel with a little creativity and a Dremel. I also want to overclock the thing and be able to switch it from stock to 10mhz (I have read that most games get weird after the 10mhz speed). When it's o/c the led will be blue, stock will be red. The actual LED panel will be opaque white if I can pull it off.

The switch will be a two position rotary. There will be a halt switch, and will most likely (if I can find a cool one like this) the rotary and halt will be the same switch (push down and it halts, turn and it switches to the second oscillator crystal). And the LED panel will be wired to the switch and there be a small circuit to either change the voltage (fora single color change LED) or switch to a second LED.

Also another pointed note in the difference between the ones with removable red plates are they are all made in Japan not taiwan. As the second gen model ones were...

easier way to tell for some folks.
