The Eidolon #1 Posted September 25, 2008 Did anyone else ever play this game? It's a laserdisc game very loosely based on Don Quixote where you had to defeat a witch to rescue the princess. Unlike most laserdisc games, it would display the next move on the screen just before you needed to make it, so in theory it required no memorization if your reflexes were fast enough. But the window to input the right move was very harsh. Even knowing what to do i could never get more than about halfway through the game. Anyway, yesterday I realized that I might be able to see how it turned out after all these years, and sure enough, someone has uploaded a winning playthrough on Youtube! It looks like a lot of other laserdisc videos are there too, including some enigmatic ones like Thayer's Quest as well as the common ones. Makes me almost want to go back and play them again. I have the Dragons Lair/Space Ace/Time Warp box set, but it seems like a mediocre game like Super Don Quixote is very unlikely to ever be released on DVD. I know there is a laserdisc emulator called Daphne, but I have no idea where one would find the video files to go with it and how to get it all working together. Have any of you ever tried laserdisc games in emulation?
landsmarra #2 Posted September 25, 2008 (edited) Laserdisc emulation with Daphne is great. I've been using that emulator for at least 5 years. I have it on my XBOX as well (DaphneX). It has a pretty good list of supported games as well...some I had never played (like the Don Quixote game and Bega's Battle). I agree that it can be a bear to set up with the MPEG files and framefiles. Not to mention it takes up about 25Gb of your hard drive (which can be an issue if yours isn't that huge). However, it does have an MPEG seek function where you can actually view the entire contents of the MPEG/laserdisc from start to finish. It's wonderful to be able to play Dragon's Lair, Space and Thayer's Quest again for free Keep in mind, MAME just recently started to support its first laserdisc game Cube Quest! Hit me up if you have any questions. Edited September 25, 2008 by landsmarra
yuppicide #3 Posted November 30, 2008 I used to love Super Don Quixote, but I never got very far.
rxd #4 Posted December 1, 2008 Daphne now practically sets up itself for Super Don Quixote. I recentlt installed it on my mame cabinet and it works great. While I never played Super Don Quixote in the arcade as far as I can recall (don't think I ever saw one), it really is quite fun under daphne.
P.I.X.L. #5 Posted December 1, 2008 Yeh, I had a couple of these! Video Connection was selling these as kits after Universal went belly up. what was great about this game was the graphic interface. the score and visual clues were overlayed onto the screen. game had ALOT more gore in it than DL. I liked it- it had the same feel as DL but you were not just in a castle. this system had lots of promise, but never made it past SDQ. I would have given anything to see Space Dracula or Adventure MR.Do!
Crazy Climber #6 Posted December 8, 2008 I have never even heard of this game, I just checked it out on KLOV and I really want to play it now. Guess the odds of me finding one of these at a show to play would be pretty rare. Hope I do some day
