phuzzed #1 Posted September 26, 2008 Do you, or know of anyone that has anger issues while Playing video games? For example, have you ever thrown a controller across the room and shattered it into a million pieces, or broken something else in the room? I'm noticing I have some anger issues while playing games, and when that happens, it is time to shut it off. I have felt like tossing the controller across the room, and if it didn't cost $40+ to replace, I just might
Ace_1 #2 Posted September 26, 2008 I only have that type of anger come to me when I play Gradius II or Gradius III. I smack my controller on my chair.
gdement #3 Posted September 26, 2008 Usually not. But Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden crossed my limit.
Rybags #4 Posted September 26, 2008 I once hurled my Wico against a brick wall when playing Uridium on the C-64, years ago. Of course those things are built to last so barely a scratch. I damaged my good old IBM media keyboard a few years old, largely due to Ctrl-Alt-Del mashings and the occasional bash - Win98 rage was somewhat to blame there. I get computer rage, but it's often thanks to shitty bug-ridden applications like Nero. Occasionally from games.
phuzzed #5 Posted September 26, 2008 I was playing the New Mega Man 9 on the Wii, via Wiiware. Remember those disappearing blocks in the Mega Man series? That really pushed my buttons, and did kick the pile of magazines across the room, that WERE sitting by my chair. I remember some PC Rage one time. I was hitting save on an important document, and the thing froze up and I did do a karate chop on the Keyboard, and popped some keys off, and broke the metal retainer under the space bar. That keyboard was never the same after that mishap.
aftermac #6 Posted September 26, 2008 Yeah, I have a bit of an anger problem with video games. I've been more conscious of it, and tried to keep it under control, since I put my controller through the LCD on my laptop playing Joust in the 2600 HSC. That little fit cost me $180 for a new screen. DAMN PTERY's!!!!
2600Lives #7 Posted September 26, 2008 I used to REALLY bad. Now, not so much. If a part of a game is pissing me off, I just flip the bird to the game designers and toss in a cheat device. Simple. Thrown plenty of controllers, but not hard enough to break any.
Artlover #8 Posted September 26, 2008 Yes. I've thrown and broken many a controller and cartridge. Also punched a monitor leaving a 6" hole in the wall, smashed a few keyboards, thrown part of a PC case..... Want me to go on?
DarthCalvin #9 Posted September 26, 2008 I have lots of verbal anger, not so much on the physical anger. I sound like the AVGN when I play some games. I did toss my controller twice today because of this weeks HSC game, not the game itself, but Stella freezing.
shadow460 #10 Posted September 26, 2008 (edited) I have lots of verbal anger, not so much on the physical anger. I sound like the AVGN when I play some games. I did toss my controller twice today because of this weeks HSC game, not the game itself, but Stella freezing. lol, we're playing Stay Frosty. You reckon Stella is freezing because she is cold? I broke my first Dual Analog pad. I threw it against the wall after Red Alert cheated one too many times, and I didn't bother unhooking it from the PS1 first. The impact snapped the plastic part of the RF choke off, but the controller still worked. Let's see...I flipped my first PC over forcefully while it was running. Well, actually it was refusing to run FF7 at the time. On impact the hard drive suffered a head crash. After a month or so, it began to corrupt data and the computer did not like its replacement. So I built a new computer...simple. I've been known to pick up an entire malfunctioning PC and throw it on the floor. Sometimes I shut them down first. Other times they shut down when momentum yanks the power cord out of its socket. I twisted an N64 pad in half while playing Goldeneye. I also yanked my first Goldeneye cart from the still running system and smashed it on a steel floor. The case survived but the circuit board cracked in three. Later I smashed a Perfect Dark cart against the wall (was mad at someone, not the game, but the cart was handy). It cracked the board in two, but the game still worked. I eventually traded it in. In total, I've broken at least three controllers with Goldeneye. One was twisted in half, one was throw on the floor, and one was dropped by accident. I threw an ASCIIware joystick onto a steel deck while playing Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. All the keys popped out of the controller, and I don't remember if I got them all back in. I smashed a Game Boy against a steel deck. The batteries flew out, but my Empire Strikes Back cart stayed. Both worked flawlessly afterwards. I nearly got thrown out of a bowling alley for pounding on the control panel on their new MK3 machine after Motaro beat my tail one too many times. Go figure. I pushed the joystick completely out of a PS2 Pelican joystick trying to get Yuna to move up the screen in FFX-2. I still have the stick, it still works, and the fact that it's very loose makes it feel just like the sticks did on the Raiden cabs I played years ago. I use it for (you guessed it), all the Raiden games I have for PS1 and PS2. I got so angry with Red Alert 2 during the days of the infamous 1.004 patch/crash to desktop that on one occasion I yanked the DVD drive open, grabbed the Allied disc, and flung it across the room. It came about three inches from my ex wife's head, and the disc cracked in half. I taped it back together. Although that disc doesn't work, I still have it along with the jewel case and all the discs that came with it. I got irate with Crisis Core recently, and hit the square so hard on my Slim PSP that the screen colors changed. After a minute or so, they went back to normal. The funny thing is that the faceplate is damaged now right over the screen, but that was a total accident that has nothing to do with games at all. Oh, yeah, I twisted a Logitech Driving Force to its stop during a Formula 1 race in GT3. The car still slid into Laguna Seca's gravel, so I twisted the wheel to the stop repeatedly (and very forcefully) until the car got back on the road. It smashed the wheel stop underneath the column and may have damaged the circuit board. I repaired both, and the wheel actually overtravels a bit in that one direction. GT3 and 4 ignore the overtravel and work fine. I've also been known to smash my mouse until it's flat, pound a few PC keyboards with my fist until the keys popped out, and smash a few joysticks in similar manner. And let's not forget my absolute best anger (non)management moment: I was angrily pointing a finger at Super Columns on my first Game Gear since it hacked me off. In the process I managed to catch my fingernail on a steel table and rip the nail almost completely off. Raged and in total pain, I smashed the Game Gear against that same table so hard that it cracked the screen in half and broke part of the casing. There was blood, batteries, and bits of shattered plastic all over the table after that, and that Game Gear is now somewhere at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean polluting the water (which is what it deserves of making me mad! ) Look on the bright side...at least the audio caps aren't dried out! I've gotten better, though. Last night with Subterranea, I was getting a little worked up. I'd still be holding the joystick when I made that gesture of WTF?. Crisis Core was an exception to the rule...it's way too dang hard at the beginning. Up til then, though, I've been throwing way fewer tantrums than I did in the N64 days. DarthCalvin #11 Posted September 26, 2008 lol, we're playing Stay Frosty. You reckon Stella is freezing because she is cold? Yeah, I sent stephena a pm and had to tell him Stay Frosty froze my Stella. I love irony.
Lemmi #12 Posted September 26, 2008 while using my really old 2600 joystick way back in the 80's the plactic joystick part was broken and my temp fix wasnt doing the job anymore so one day while playing a game i just ripped the entire plastic part out of the base and after that ive thrown down a few NES controllers untill one day after i slammed it into the ground the board inside broke in half, and since that day i just started yelling AHHHH! instead of throwing controllers
Reaperman #13 Posted September 26, 2008 (edited) actually I have anger issues when I'm talking about video games--as opposed to playing them. There is a hypnotic sense of calm that comes over me while actually gaming. In the old days I used to have 'but I pressed the jump button' anger, but advances in video game controller hardware pretty much eliminated that. I think a lot of people's anger comes from a need to complete bad games or perfect repetitive ones. I don't actually feel the need to 'get good' at any of my games, so when I'm not having fun anymore, I simply play a new game. As a result, I'm a fighting game fan that doesn't get much deeper than quarter circle punch, and I've completed maybe 50 video games in my life. I may be rubbish at games, but the flip side is that they do make me happy. Edited September 26, 2008 by Reaperman
DeusExMachina #14 Posted September 26, 2008 I remember back in 1995 I used to go to an arcade and play Virtua Fighter 2. There was one with a 50 inch screen and it usually had the same group of people playing. One guy was very good and in between fights, he would do the poses of the characters...that was my first clue he was a bit crazy. Anyway, one day this kid comes in and just destroys him. The guy is so pissed that he just starts punching the other guy. They got into this huge fight and the police arrested them both. They took my name as a witness. When the police called, my girlfriend answered and she asked what it was about. I told her and she just rolled her eyes and said I was too old for video games. We aren't together anymore. phuzzed #15 Posted September 26, 2008 What sucks is when you are playing the Wii, and you forget the Wii-mote is strapped to your wrist, so you go to throw it across the room, and it comes back and pops you in the face

shadow460 #17 Posted September 26, 2008 lol, I remember ending a few winning streaks on MKII when it came out. Once I learned Jax's cheap combos, I destroyed quite a few "good" players. I dunno how many of 'em just stormed off.
+Random Terrain #18 Posted September 26, 2008 If a game is so frustrating that it makes you angry enough to throw your controller, that means the game designer is no better than a drug dealer. Many arcade game designers used frustration as a way to get you addicted so you'd keep plopping quarters into the machine. It's a harmful trick that most game designers continued to use when they made games for home consoles. If you start to play a game and you see that the game designer is using frustration to get you hooked, quit playing if you value your physical/mental health and your relationships. A video game is supposed to be fun. If a game designer's malicious 'challenges' make you want to throw something or punch a hole in a wall, that's not a sign you are having fun. It's a clue that you are being victimized by misguided or even venomous game designers who want to stuff their pockets full of cash at the expense of your health. 2600Lives #19 Posted September 26, 2008 I used to actually win money on Tekken 3 back in the day (I actually bet an Army recruiter that I'd join up if he could beat me, but if he lost, he had to give me all the money he had on him. Got a nice fifty bucks off that one!). Some guys would get SO pissed when I'd eat them alive, but at that time I was still wrestling, so most didn't say anything to a six foot five block of muscle. Lol. One thing I HATE though is fucking trash talkers. Shut your pie-hole and just play the damn game. Ugh. Part of the reason I play NO competitive games over X-Box live. phuzzed #21 Posted September 26, 2008 I'm sure everyone's seen this, but there's angry, then there's this kid -> Okay, I'll admit I have an anger problem at times, but there is no way I'm that bad. One of these days, that kid is going to drop dead as a result of throwing that kind of fit.
RJ #22 Posted September 26, 2008 (edited) In the past I've cried from frustration, thrown games, controllers, & other objects, whipped controllers by the cords until they smashed (actually that wasnt too long ago), damaged a Jag CD, prob. more I cant recall. Nowadays I dont play any kind of game long enough to get mad at it, since I simply dont have the time. My gaming sessions are few & far between, & I have to make every minute count & enjoy it. & nothing as severe as that German kid. If that's not a fake video...yikes. If my kids ever do that, it's game over- then again they wont be playing UT at that age. Edited September 26, 2008 by RJ
Classic Pac #23 Posted September 26, 2008 Try nearly breaking your console more than once. That face puzzle in Beyond the Beyond nearly got the better of me. After 4 weeks of trying I also felt like I should hire someone to do the puzzle for me. It got so bad I almost could not stand to look at my PS1 again. Then one day I finished it, and saved it. At least I won't have to do that ever again.
doubledown #24 Posted September 26, 2008 I've punched a hole in the wall playing a friend in Virtua Fighter Kids on the Sega Saturn. I've kicked a hole through an ottoman playing Power Stone on the Sega Dreamcast. I've repeatedly "dropped" (untill broken) a PS2 controller playing Gran Turismo 2 on the PS2. That's been years though. Now I usually just swear with increasing volume untill I finally beat whatever/whoever is besting me.
bfutrel #25 Posted September 26, 2008 In the past I would pound the joystick on the table. Later I would just curse at it - much good that did - or say 'it works' and switch to another game. There are plenty of games to go around and I'm not going to beat myself over the head while trying to get through a dud. I think the best example of getting angry at a game was my Dad. Years ago he was playing Realsports Baseball with either me or one of my two brothers. He was getting creamed and yanked the game out of the 2600 while it was still running, put it on the floor and stomped on it with his boot. It has packing take wrapped around it to hold it together but it still works.
