chat room with one or more 400s?

is it possible to run a chat room/ website combo with one or more atari 400's? and how might one do so?

I dunno. It might be possible to create a chatroom by banging rocks together. The real question is would anyone want to use it?

Why not use IRC? Any computer or terminal would be an option that way...

You could probably rig something up locally... basic texting between rooms basically... have it emit that god awful atascii 253 sound when one comes in...

Looks like $F556 in the XL/XE ROMs. It doesn't respect the XL keyclick disable flag at $02DB either...

 

If you patch the OS, set the byte at $F556 to $60 (an RTS), then ctrl-2 just has a normal keyclick noise, and printing the bell character ($FD) does nothing.

 

In the atari800 monitor, you can say "m f556 60"... on real hardware you could copy the ROM OS to RAM and just use POKE in BASIC.
