Forza killed my Xbox ... :(

Recommended Posts

I got a used Xbox 360 less than a month ago and now I'm getting the 3 red lights ... all because of Forza 2, which I bought just a few days ago. From the reports online it seems to be a common complaint with Forza killing Xboxes.

I've registered the Xbox with Microsoft support and placed a repair order. The standard 12 month warranty is out tomorrow! But can I get hold of UPS to arrange collection? Can I hell. They've even got the wrong address for their Cardiff depot, which even Google Maps doesn't recognise. :x

Edit: Found another site that has the correct address. It's not that far. Think I'll drop it off to them in the morning.

That's too bad. I had to send mine in twice. Once it gave the 3 red lights while watching a DVD rental that had a fair amount of scuff marks on it. The other time was when I first started playing Halo 3 online. The first time I actually booted up Halo 3 my 360 froze with a garbled mess on the screen which was not a good sign.

my xbox 360 was well over a year old when mine was dead and customer service gave me no problems at all and they fixed it for free still. They realize the defect rate of the product and probably won't give you a hard time with it.

After you setup a repair you have 20 days to get it into the service center, even if it was just a day within warranty.

Every single Xbox 360 should be covered against RROD until at least November 22, 2008. They have a 3 year warranty against RROD. I got one that was suppose to be refurbished but gave me RROD when I first tried booting it. I had no problems getting it fixed by MS.

How in the heck does Forza kill your Xbox?

You've got me all paranoid now because I love that game to death.

Oddly, I got a RROD about a month ago -- the day Rockband 2 launched. I don't think it was related to Forza though.

Seems to be causing some Xbox GPUs to overheat and warp the board.

This guy's problem was identical to mine (Microsoft's Great Forza 2 Cover-Up):

"So here is the situation I have seen. Forza 2 kept causing my xbox 360 to crash showing a corrupt screen. This spread to when I was simply booting up the xbox, I could not ever get to the dashboard at start-up. My friend said this was similar to his console before the circle of death."

Lots of games have been blamed for 'causing' the RROD. I remember the same being said when Crackdown came out. Chances are if the console's gonna break, it's gonna break, regardless of what you play.

More then likely. But that doesn't mean there isn't merit to the claims.

One program (game) isn't like another. Different programming techniques and ways of achieving goals. How the CPU or GFX chip is used/accessed/pushed all changes physcial characterists like power consumption and heat generation. All you need is a PC with a cpu temp monitoring program to verify this. How hot it gets depends on what you do. If you have temp monitoring on the original Xbox, you'll see the same effect on it as well.

Considering how damn flaky the 360 regarding thermal issues, I absolutely believe certain games have the potential to be destructive more then others.

The reason people think Forza kills 360s is because it came with the Pro and a lot of people have it.

Anything that pushes the hardware could generate enough heat to kill the older boxes.

My brother has played Forza on his 360 an absurd number of hours since I gave it to him but his is a Falcon based system and hasn't had a problem.

I have a feeling that the Falcon based units run cooler. I'm hoping that they'll see sense and fit a Falcon board in my machine. It's now on its way home to me so hopefully I'll be back up and running by the end of the week.

I didn't buy Forza until a couple of weeks after I got the Xbox. The machine had been running perfectly then almost as soon as I put in Forza, the crap started happening.

Yay! Got my baby back today. Looks like they've swapped the board and ... the DVD drive. :? Maybe it's standard practice. Aren't the new drives flash-proof?

Not sure whether to give Forza another go.

What other games did you have? You have to remember that many of the first gen 360 games didn't really push the hardware and Forza still looks pretty good today. I'm guessing any games that cause the CPU and GPU to generate more heat will bring out the flaws in the original machine.

Sure...I would. No sense depriving yourself if you like the game.

The latest news is that I've got my machine up and running and ... I can't connect to Xbox Live. :x

Once in a while the network test stops at the MTU stage but when it gets past it, it tries to download an update from XBL but fails. Looking around the net it seems to be yet another common M$ cock-up ... machines coming back from RROD repairs with new mobos and drives but which won't connect to XBL!!

You sure it's not your network?

Do you have any type of firewall between your 360 and your router/modem?

Maybe you need to allow a new MAC address through?

The network hasn't been touched since I sent it back, apart from changing the wireless encryption, but it's wired directly to the router. I'm using a Belkin router, which isn't listed as one of the 360 compatible ones by Microsoft but it all worked fine before it went away. On this router you can set something called a DMZ which allows you to place one local IP address outside the firewall, so even though I've got port forwarding set for the 360 it should just ignore those settings anyway.

As for M$ tech support, I've heard of them telling users that they have a banned console when they've just had it back from M$ with the same problem.

The bad thing is, they are going to tell you you have an unsupported router, do you have another to try?

In any case, if you're sure it's the system, I'd send it back to them and explain to them it sounds like they have a problem since other people are complaining about the same thing and also explain to them you spent a lot of cash on a system that stated it could connect to the internet...and doesn't. Maybe wouldn't mention the Belkin though, they'll just tell you to replace it.

To be honest, if they want me to replace the router I'll tell em to f*** off. It worked perfectly before the repair. If they try to tell me that the Xbox is banned then I'll file a claim in the county court. I've better things to do than be pissed around. :x

Or maybe I will go out and buy another one ... then try and mod this one for single player gaming.

UPDATE

Just found this on the support site:

"Users may experience difficulties when attempting to recover accounts and/or perform account management functions. We are aware of the problem and working to resolve the technical issues.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience."

Might be related, might not. I'll have to wait for this message to disappear before trying again.

Man I hope not!!

I love Forza2. My RRoD came when I got RockBand last year for 'mas. Unpacked it, played 1 song..started one anyway... and RRoD'd it. After I got the 360 back from MS, have not had a problem since.

edit: oh, and I still play Forza2 all the time to this day.

First I've heard of this. I had to send my 360 in recently, RROD, and had no problem getting it back and it works fine. I played Forza 2 and Crackdown to death and I didn't see any problems. RROD came after my nephew borrowed it and then returned it. Plugged it in and RROD, funny thing was he had just played it the night before and didn't have a problem! Sent it in and got it back quick. Still play my original Xbox due to 360 issues. If 360 craps out I just switch to the Original Xbox and play the numerous games I've got for it and send the 360 into MS to fix. Love both systems and wouldn't trade them for the world. Sony hoax or just a coincidence? I think the latter is the case.

If my 360 ever RROD's I'm going to be REALLY pissed off. I took my time to look around for a Falcon.

Plus, I bought a brand new Elite 120GB black model. I didn't buy a refurbished model wish scratches and scuffmarks and stuff. I'm already pissed now that someone sprayed room freshner in the living room and got little specs of crap on the controller case that doesn't come off, but the 360 itself is in excellant condition.

What happens to all my downloaded games if I ever have to send my unit in? What happens to the games that are no longer available for download?
