S1500 #1 Posted October 17, 2008 In the twin cities, there are tons of attack ads being traded between Norm Coleman & Al Franken. I remember the "sega does what Nintendon't!" ads of yesteryear. What's the history of these ads? I'm curious when the first shit-talking of video game marketing occured. We were told the Game Boy's palette was that of creamed spinach. sadly, these ads seem to be gone. The closest we had was the incredibly stupid things said from Sony PR in regards to the PS3 versus the competition.
fiddlepaddle #2 Posted October 17, 2008 I liked the Al Franken character in Trading Places, but most of his Saturday Night Live skits were lame. I sure wouldn't vote for a comedian, especially not one who is not very funny. We've got enough clowns running the government these days, anyway. Vic George 2K3 #4 Posted October 17, 2008 Some may say that the smack-talking video game ads may have started in the early 1980s, although I would hardly call George Plimpton's ads comparing the Atari 2600 to the Intellivision "smack talk": those ads were rather refined in their mannerisms compared to what would follow in later years. Reaperman #6 Posted October 17, 2008 (edited) I liked the snk print ads. the jaguar's tv ads were probably the worst of the bunch though. I really don't remember the genesis ads for some reason. I also seem to remember every one of gameboy's early rivals taking shots at it. Edited October 17, 2008 by Reaperman
ComputerSpaceFan #7 Posted October 17, 2008 My guess is these days any video game company is scared they may end up like Sega so they avoid talking smack now. What I mean is, Sonic and Crash were once lording their supremacy over Mario back in the 90's and now they come pleading to Nintendo to allow them to have games for Nintendo systems. Back in the 90's it was all about kicking butt and taking names but the casualties of that campaign have piled up. These days, everyone is playing nice with the big three platforms. "Can't we all just get along?"
