Laemeur #1 Posted October 19, 2008 I've got my 800XL going through sort-of a crummy old Sylvania TV at the moment and I've decided an upgrade is in order. I want to get a small CRT monitor for it, and I've been looking around eBay at composite monitors, trying to decide which way to go. Is a composite monitor aimed at the computer market, like an old Commodore monitor, going to perform more favorably with the Atari than, say, a Sony PVM-something, which was aimed primarily at the broadcast market? Or is a good composite monitor just a good composite monitor, regardless of its target consumer?
ClausB #2 Posted October 19, 2008 Better than composite is a monitor with S-Video input, but you have to modify your 800XL slightly to use it. Search these forums for instructions. You also need to build or buy an Atari to S-Video cable. The old Commodore monitor used a precursor to S-Video and it looked great with an 800.
Laemeur #3 Posted October 19, 2008 Oh, wow; that mod is a piece of cake (the 100k resistor off R67,R68, to the monitor cable port, right?). I'll do that, then, and start looking for a monitor with either S-Video, or Y/C connectors. I'd prefer to get a monitor that is of roughly the same vintage as the computer. Anybody have suggestions regarding which brands seem to have weathered the years best?
Fletch #4 Posted October 19, 2008 My Commodore 1702 has served me well for a long time. Still looks crisp and bright all these years later. cbmeeks #5 Posted October 20, 2008 Get a TV with S-Video and the Atari to S-Video cable. You will NOT be sorry. S-Video is 10 million times better than composite and 10 billion times better than RF.

Assuming you don't have any games that use artifacting... Tempest
+orpheuswaking #7 Posted October 20, 2008 I love my 1802 C= monitors... Although don't put them directly on top of a 1050 drive, it screws them up LOL
cbmeeks #8 Posted October 20, 2008 oh yeah....forgot about the artifacting. I'm a Commodore man by nature. LOL
Laemeur #9 Posted October 31, 2008 I decided to go ahead and spring for a Commodore 1702 from the 'Bay. For those of you who are interested, the vendor from which I'm buying mine still has two for sale, and they're letting them go for a $59.99 ButItNow with free shipping. Seemed like a darned good deal to me. Linkage: Monitor #1 Monitor #
Warriorisabouttodie #10 Posted October 31, 2008 I love my 1802 C= monitors... Although don't put them directly on top of a 1050 drive, it screws them up LOL I have an 1802 monitor I need to get rid of because of space issues. It was bought for the 8bit atari and I agree works perfect with that system (and looks like it was made for the XL line with matching silver/black colors). PM me if anyone is interested.
