birdie3 #1 Posted November 10, 2008 Does anyone know if there were SMS consoles that did not include a built in game? The only reason I ask is because I have a power base that either doesn't have a BIOS intro screen (i.e. I turn it on with no cart in the slot) or it could be damaged and does not work properly. Any help is greatly appreciated.
nathanallan #2 Posted November 10, 2008 (edited) I have both the SMS and SMS2 and they both have games on them built-in. I'll ask for you at sega-16. Nathan Link to Sega-16 forum question Edited November 10, 2008 by nathanallan
nathanallan #3 Posted November 10, 2008 Does is play carts okay? Got one reply that if it plays carts then it's okay. That was from an admin of the site, so I give him credit.
fiddlepaddle #4 Posted November 10, 2008 I've heard about the built-in game. I tried to access the built in game using a Master System; no-go. Also tried it on my Power Base Converter; also no-go.

nathanallan #6 Posted November 10, 2008 (edited) Seems that the general concensus is saying that there were some SMS's that did not have a built in game. So your system is okay, not broken. From wikipedia: Snail Maze is a 1986 video game by Sega, part of the Sega Master System. Instead of being released on a cartridge, it was built into the system's BIOS and could be played by starting the system without a game cartridge inserted and holding Up and buttons 1 and 2 simultaneously. The later "Master System II" model did not include Snail Maze. Snail Maze was never released in cartridge or card format. eric_ruck #7 Posted November 23, 2008 I thought the US SMS only had the stupid maze game, and it's hidden. I forget what you have to press on power up since it wasn't really worth remembering. Didn't check if the power base converter has it. But none of my systems have a game that comes on automatically if you turn it on without a cart. fiddlepaddle #8 Posted November 24, 2008 I finally got the maze game to come up... "up" and both buttons all together with no game inserted: works on the (US) master system, but not on the power base converter. It's an OK game, but the maze is the same every time, so it gets boring fast.

birdie3 #10 Posted November 24, 2008 No, No, No..! My console does not have a built in game (i.e. Hang On) not does it have the maze game. When I turn it on the power LED lights and the screen displays garbage with no BIOS Sega intro screen or anything. Haven't found a cart to test yet. Once you make it to the next maze you will have less time to complete that maze. I have gotten up to the 4th or 5th maze before. If you don't complete the maze before time is up you start over on maze #1 again. So, if you lose on maze 5, you go back to maze 1 and start all over again.
