fdurso224 #1 Posted November 11, 2008 Hi guys, Is anybody here in Atariage remember the classic arcade Street Fighter 1? To be honest, the was my favorite if all street fighters from the franchise. Considering on what Capcom had to work with at the time, I believe it was a nicely detailed game and one of the better foundations of fighting games in the 1980's. Even though that they weren't to popular at the time, Street Fighter 1 helped spark a particular interest in this field. Remember those huge soft buttons you had to hit? Anthony.... BassGuitari #2 Posted November 11, 2008 I remember it distinctly. I even have it on some Capcom Classics such'n'such disc on Playstation 2. Even when I first played it, it was already something of a relic, especially when the arcade got Super Street Fighter II. I liked it quite a bit though. What was funny at the time (this was in '93 or '94) was that most of the kids I talked to (we were in 3rd or 4th grade) didn't even know there WAS a Street Fighter I. It was the height of SF2's popularity, which came seemingly out of nowhere, and they wondered why there was no SF1. Before I played it in the arcade (the machine had normal joystick/buttons, by the way), I had the DOS PC version. Loved it. But yeah, everyone would be crowding around Super Street Fighter II or Mortal Kombat II or Killer Instinct or whatever, and I'd be off in the back of the arcade by myself, with Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga, and Street Fighter. Even as a kid, I was into retro!
2600Lives #3 Posted November 11, 2008 I played one many years ago with those weird pneumatic punch pads. HOLY HELL did that control suck. Even with the normal buttons, it was nigh impossible to do special moves. Still, great game. Not my fave in the series, of course, but still great. +Sauron #4 Posted November 11, 2008 I always thought the first Street Fighter game was awful, but then the only machine I ever played it on had those crappy buttons.
STGuy1040 #5 Posted November 11, 2008 I really liked playing SF1 on my Turbografx / CD system back in the day. In fact the TG-16 version was a pretty good translation: Street Fighter / Fighting Street TG-16 CD
108 Stars #6 Posted November 11, 2008 How can anyone like that game? Sorry, but it was the definition of shitty gameplay. the graphics were alright, but the controls are a total mess, with the execution of special moves depending on luck alone; not to mention the collision detection. No wonder it tokk Capcom so long to rerelease this shameful spot in the glorious history of the franchise.
DarthCalvin #7 Posted November 11, 2008 We had it in the store I worked in when I was 16. I played it about every other day but never got good at it because the buttons were really spotty. It was frustrating but I had found a way to play for free so I didn't care. It was the regular style buttons, they just weren't working 100%
Bakasama #8 Posted November 11, 2008 I've played this game for free some years ago. Good Lord, even with six buttons, the gameplay blows.

I agree 100% Not to mention they threw that cheapass in with "nchucks"...why dont I get a weapon? I could rarley pull off the moves I wanted. Animation was very choppy to me....even back then it drove me nuts! And Saget was Impossible to beat....1 hit death from tiger a punch, and I could hit him 50 times he would barely be hurt, he hits me 5-6 quick times..Im dead. Here is a vid I found shows what I mean about All of the above...Even the guy in the vid ges pissed at the cheapness of SAGET! This is a game I "Never" want to play again! Thank God for SF2! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgxJ345zMDg...feature=related
Royalshin #10 Posted November 11, 2008 I am just wondering if anybody remembers that Street Fighter was originally FIghter Street? Maybe they just sent over the leftover Fighter Street to US with the Street Fighter title? I remember it for being a really nice game that is still fun today. I mean the graphics still get my eyes to jump. Also don't forget about the music and whats his face that only appears in the background of later Street fighter games. joeybastard #13 Posted November 11, 2008 I only played it with the crappy buttons and wasn't impressed. It probably wasn't a fair comparison though since SFII was already out and was(and still is) my fav fighter.
chrisbid #14 Posted November 11, 2008 i love the horrible voice sample used between fights this was a 1987 arcade machine and the voice samples were more muffled than the intellivision
Zap! #15 Posted November 11, 2008 I can't see how anyone can prefer this over SFII, which is better in every way possible. Too each his own, there are also those who choose Return of the Jedi as their favorite Star Wars movie.
nester #16 Posted November 11, 2008 Yeah when I was a kid and Street Fighter II exploded I never met anyone who had even heard of the first game. It was much the same with the original Phantasy Star. I would always look for it for sale in the back of gaming magazines, but I never did see it. It was years before I found out why. On the other hand, there is a Power Punch II but not a Power Punch I as far as I know. That's a little off topic but I felt like mentioning it.
Christophero Sly #17 Posted November 11, 2008 They had this game in the student center when I was in college. I remember playing it a few times.

+Sauron #19 Posted November 11, 2008 So what was the game that was the one with graphics like it but was a beat em up? Um, which one? There were about 100 along those lines. Unless you're referring to Final Fight...
108 Stars #20 Posted November 12, 2008 Prefering this game over Street Fighter II or 95% of all other fighting games is really the product of nostalgia alone. It´s gameplay was not good even for the standards of 1987. It was just a show off game with nice backgrounds and the funny idea of punching the buttons. But the gameplay was just lousy back then, even before SF II set a new standard.

For those who say they like it better than SFII, they either haven't played enough of SFII, or they have an agenda and/or want to be different.
