Sending the ol 360s back. Both of em!

Recommended Posts

Yep, both my 360 stopped reading disks. First my pro unit stopped reading disks, and then a day later the Elite.

Why? No clue.

I was trying to see what all they had in common.

First off they both stopped in my office, so I suppose anything I use in my office to hook up the 360 would be a common(power supply, cable etc..) Next would be the system update last week. I updated them both, ironically the Elite I updated a day later and it stopped reading disk a day later than the Pro. Hmmmm

Last would be the game I was currently playing. Fable 2. Both stopped reading the disks with that particular disk in the tray.

Will be interesting to see what the outcome is.

Proof positive the 360 is the least reliable system EVER!! Good thing I have extended warrantees on both. If you don't have extended warrantees and want to keep playing the 360 for any length of time. I'd get one because this system is flakey with a capitol “F”

So much for having 2 systems so I'd have a back-up. ;)

Or it could be your office has crappy power.

Seriously. Are you sure there isn't some giant hairdryer or generator on your circuit or something? That's messed up.

Yep.. they are unreliable. That much is pretty common knowledge to all unless you're in denial. And if you are, it only lasts until your own 360 dies as well

I was never in denial (I knew their reliability blew), but I've said a couple of months ago I've had zero problems with any 360 since I bought my launch one.

Well since then, the 2 I bought for both my nephews died.. one 2 months ago, and the other a week ago. My launch 360 RROD'd recently as well. My other 360's dvd drive died too (it cant play discs but plays xbox live arcade titles fine).

I currently have a Falcon version that's running fine but who knows how long that will last  They're right up there with the 5200 controller hardware as far as durability

So everything else works (system boots up fine, i can log into Live, i can play arcade games) but the 360 wont read disks anymore because of crappy power? How is this possible?

I'd say ...Ok anything is possible, but even if this had been the case, I'm betting it would work in my living room downstairs on a completely different breaker?

It doesn't.

And yes I've tried 3 different Xbox 360 power supplies too. No sir. The power seems fine. I wont discount anything though, I'm hoping they send me another power supply like they did last time. If they do, I'll put the office one up, just in case.

If I had been in denial, I wouldn't have bought extended warrantees on both. ;)

I'm lucky too. (Or I should say wise...not lucky) The only thing covered under the 3 year extension they offer is RRoD. Lord knows if the RRoD doesn't get you, something else will.

It could be that something on the Fable disc or a release of dust has blocked the lenses on both machines.

Once the damage has been done, it's been done, and changing the enviorment that created the damage to begin with doesn't undo the damage.

Could have been a dirty power issue on the office circuit that caused a spike or something to toast the DVD drive. Laser optics are kind of sensitive.

Let me ask this, what kind of power supplies do you have with those two 360's. The grounded kind or the earlier ungrounded kind?

Tho all in all, I kinda doubt it's a power issue myself. It's probably more like Kripto said, something with that disc causing the drive to go loopy.

This is why when I get my first 360, i'm bullet proofing it from RRODing. From building it into a PC case, to making it work off of a PC power supply, custom heatsinks/fans on each component, the works.

But, until I get the time, I'm not bothering buying a 360.

That sucks! My younger brother has been through 3 systems and they all had the same problem (i.e. DVD drive went bad). I bought my Xbox 360 second-hand from someone who had it repaired by Microsoft because it had the red rings of death. He sold me the system cheap; he even included the letter of apology from Microsoft when they repaired the system. lol

I've owned the system for over a year with no problems at all (knocks on wood, knocks on head -- I hope I didn't jinx anything lol).

Well this is my office. I'm suprised the enviroment after 4 or 5 years it hasn't affected other things plugged into the same circuit like the disk drive in my PC, the disk drive in my lap-top or the DVD player. How can I tell what 360 power supply I have? I'd imagine at least one of them is the early one since I got it a few months (maybe around 5 months) after launch.

I hope it's not the disk. I was hours into that game!!! :x

You use the same power supply on both borked units? It the PS is bad that could do it. Older 360s had a larger power supply than the newer Falcons as well. A Falcon PS might not stand up to an older 360. The disc show any weirdness like delamination to it?

Could just be coincidence and crappy MS hardware, but the timing is a bit odd. ;)

Can't they make a super deluxe elite ultra special version that won't die on you within the first 3 years? I want to play 360 games, but I do not want to send it back 500 billion times. Microscoffed is pissing me off. Make a damn 360 console that will last, you nut scratching finger sniffers. My old Xbox will probably outlast every 360 ever made.

Thats what's killing me....the timing. All 3 of the power supplies I have are the same size physically. I bought a Pro like 5 months after launch. (Natually I don't have the same unit I bought since I've returned it several times) and I bought an Elite like right when they came out and have both power supplies that came with the units. I also have a 3rd power supply MS sent me when they returned one of my units. I think maybe I'll toss the one I was using in the office since I really don't feel like getting the 360 back and ruining it right away.

The Fable disk was brand new and is flawless. Not a scartch or imperfection on it that I can see.

I meant larger in the sense that the older 360 PSs had a higher output rating. 200+ W compared to 170 something W for the Elite/Falcon units. Physically they are the same size I believe. You wouldn't want to hook an older 360 to a newer Falcon PS.

In any case, even if it's overkill speculation I'd quarantine that PS in the office. ;)

Like I said, I doubt it was a power issue myself. Just trying to explain the reasoning it was suggested and why moving it wouldn't help.

How can I tell what 360 power supply I have?

Look at the cord that plugs into the wall. Does it have two prongs (not grounded), or three (grounded). :ponder:

Yup, that could do it. :|

Well, don't "toss" it, just don't use that one anymore. Atleast keep it around for parts or something. :)

Googling around shows lots of people are having assorted reading/loading problems with Fable 2 discs and are having to get replacement discs issued. :ponder:

You know I forgot about it, but my first Fable 2 disc was completely f*cked. I popped it out of the case and happened to look at the underside and it had huge layer/delamination damage all across it. Brought it back before I even put it in the 360.

I dunno, The game looks and played fine. I played it for hours. I will admit though I think when the Elite "died" it was when the disk was in and running. it was like all of a sudden the framerate dropped horrendessly. I pulled up the dashboard menu and the Elite froze. I had been playing for a bit and was ready to quit anyways. I figured it was an issue that would clear itself with a reboot. I got some sleep and around 7 hours later when I went to continue, it wouldn't read disks anymore. So I guess it could be the disk? Man.... so I guess that's a game I'll never finish. i really don't feel like getting a unit and f'ing it right back up.

All the PS I have say 203W and none are grounded.

I don't have a falcon unit.

It really is a shame to like and want a product so much, when also knowing that the product is defective. And its even worse that the corporations have laid the responsibility for maintaining a defective product on the consumer by selling us Extended Warranties and we, the consumer, go along with it.

I'm on my 4th 360 and I'm in the same boat as so many others. I hate MS for making such an inferior and defective product, but love the 360 because of Live and the games. But I made up my mind that if this current 360 dies and I'm going to be charged to repair/replace it, I won't spend another penny on the system. It's just not worth the hassle and frustration of constantly dealing with RROD and disk drive errors because they happen so often. Nor can I continue to support a company that doesn't fix the problem after over three years of knowing the problem exists.

If I become a non-360 gamer, I'll miss playing 360 console exclusives like Duke Nukem and Gears of War. But life goes on without these games.

Sorry to read of your problems, Moycon and hope everything works out for you.
