Superscript

Recommended Posts

Is the Superscript Word Processor (Precision Software) freeware now or is it still a commercial product? I can't find a copy anywhere and I've always been curious to have a look at it.

Sorry not Superscript Just Speedscript here.

Ah, thanks anyway. Speedscript was a nice little WP (notable for providing the code base for Textpro).

Superscript was, by all accounts, quite a powerful program. Derek Fern used to sell it (I believe I ordered it from him c. 1995, but it hasn't arrived yet icon_smile.gif ).

Here's Superscript. Manual scan will take somewhat longer ;)

Quickstart:

Create a working disk or tutorial working disk

Try 'EPSON' when prompted for printer type

SELECT activates menu and cursors control it

Press SPACE when prompted for a filename to load to see a directory listing

Haven't got any further myself yet!

Superscript.zip

Have fun.

Thanks! Fascinating to finally get a look at this program. Seems to have a lot of depth to it, although the menus are a little clunky and I really miss some kind of file selector. The spelling checker is really welcome, though. Looking forward to getting hold of a printed manual, and Superscript will certainly provide inspiration for future enhancements to The Last Word.

EDIT: I take that back about the menus. You can press the initial letter of the option you want, so a two-tier selection can be reached with four keystrokes (including <Select> and <Return>).

I had a flick through the manual last night and it certainly has some nice features. Guess I'll need to break the scanner out :)

Without a doubt. Of course there are some awful limitations, most notably the fact it's not exactly hard disk friendly (having to booted). This was typical of commercial apps of the time, though.

I've been playing with the spell-checker and it's quite interesting. The dictionary disk contains 26 DOS 2 files (one for each letter of the alphabet, all initially very small and naturally compressed). The program would appear to load all or some of each alpha letter's file into RAM starting with A, then scan all words in the document against that list, flagging up those not found. New words are saved to a separate user dictionary file. It's an attractively simple spell checking method and it seems to work well. There are also some nice math and tabulation features in there.

This great, professional app was long overdue for placement in the online archives. Thanks for your efforts, Paul! icon_smile.gif
