Heaven/TQA #1 Posted December 15, 2008 http://www.kennedyapproach.com/home.php?action=ShowDownload did anybody played it already? interesting that it is mentioning that the 8bit versions do not use digi-speech?
Rybags #2 Posted December 15, 2008 On the home page: It was the first game to use a speech engine (computer generated voice) which was quite an achievement for a 64kb game. It was probably the first ever realtime strategy game (RTS). Don't think I ever got into the game, but it was groundbreaking in those regards. Of course, games before it had speech but not in such an interactive useful way.
Heaven/TQA #3 Posted December 15, 2008 I am not sure but reading for the ESS it seems that is kind of packed samples with f.e. c64 versions 365 bytes per second and kind of "MP3" thing (reduce the things you don't here etc...) but could be wrong, I only looked once in the Ghostbuster speech code... spookt #4 Posted December 15, 2008 Thanks for posting the link. I never got into KA back in the day. It probably didn't seem like a particularly exciting game at the time. However I've just played one round of the remake and I really enjoyed it. I guess it's a pretty unique genre - I think I might even dig out the original for the 800XL when I get home. Tezz #5 Posted December 15, 2008 Cool, I set KA loading on my 1010 in 1985, it should have completed loading by now .. Actually I thought it was samples too and not a generated SAM voice?

FastRobPlus #7 Posted December 15, 2008 I happen to have a few copies in my games receiving bin this morning. It looks like the Atari version is actually 48K. The game credits "Software Speech by Berkley Systems" if that's helpful at all. Actually - I think Berkley Systems was the flying toaster screen saver company. They got thier start on the Apple II doing accessibility software such as text to speech for the blind, so that makes a lot of sense.
Thorsten Günther #8 Posted December 15, 2008 Er, the Atari ST version doesn't speak (what a disappointment), but the A8 version surely does (I have an original disk and played this one numerous times, it's a great title once you get into it). spookt #10 Posted December 15, 2008 Man! I just spent over an hour on the original and after the 1st level it get tough! A great game though. I can't believe I passed this up back when. I can actually remember standing with my Dad looking at games and him pointing out the part of the Kennedy Approach box which mentioned the speech. He thought it sounded cool, but like I said above, as a 12 year old kid it didn't appeal. I think I'll be playing this a lot now it's on my SIO2USB memory stick I realised tonight that the original disk I have of this is unplayable as it asks for codes from the manual which I don't have. Ah well, thank goodness for AtariMania

Thorsten I searched for a loooooooooong time back in 1997 for a copy on the ST, finally got it, and yes, what a major disappointment.
