fdurso224 #1 Posted December 19, 2008 Hi guys, Does anybody here on Atariage a fan of Nintendo's Alleyway for the original Game Boy? I always felt that alleyway was a neat little game to past the time. I felt that the box art was pretty nice and seeing mario operate the "pill-shape" ship was cool. What do you guys think? godslabrat #2 Posted December 19, 2008 I agree, Alleyway was majorly cool... an overlooked gem. I still play it on long trips.

+atari2600land #4 Posted December 19, 2008 Alleyway is cool, but the bonus levels are frustrating. I mean, who actually has gotten every brick on one? What happens if you do?
fdurso224 #5 Posted December 19, 2008 Alleyway is cool, but the bonus levels are frustrating. I mean, who actually has gotten every brick on one? What happens if you do? Hi, I did a few times. You get a extra 500 pts for it. It isn't easy, just a pain in the butt to do.. Anthony....
Wickeycolumbus #6 Posted December 19, 2008 Love this game, got it when gamestop was clearencing 25% off gameboy games. Have 2 copies, when I play it I cant put it down!
chrisbid #7 Posted December 19, 2008 Alleyway is cool, but the bonus levels are frustrating. I mean, who actually has gotten every brick on one? What happens if you do? it's not that hard, keep hitting the ball at a 45 degree angle, this takes out the most bricks at the fastest speed and it will not lock the paddle into a single spot
Royalshin #8 Posted December 20, 2008 I will admit it is a fun game but I hate the way Nintendo tried to get in the minds of players buy showing a image of Mario in a pill shaped spaceship. I wish I had the time.

I wish I had the time. You are right, it probably would not have sold as much if Mario wasn't on the cover.
fdurso224 #10 Posted December 20, 2008 Hi guys, I wished Nintendo had made a sequel to Alleyway during the early years of the GB. That way, it would've stayed fresh into gamers mind to play this title more often. In my Opinion, Alleyway would've been a perfect launch title game for the GB, GBC, and GBA (even the DS as well) Anthony....
gdement #11 Posted December 20, 2008 It was okay but I would have preferred something more like Arkanoid.
godslabrat #12 Posted December 20, 2008 In my Opinion, Alleyway would've been a perfect launch title game for the GB, GBC, and GBA (even the DS as well) GBC, GBA, and DS, I think you might have a point... but come on, there is NO WAY that there could have been a better launch title for the GB than Tetris. It was a hot game, addictive as hell, perfect for travel. I think the original GB version of Tetris is still the best ever. Alleyway and Tetris are both great examples of how much fun first-gen games can be.
fdurso224 #13 Posted December 20, 2008 (edited) Hi, Absolutely. But as a side-by-side launch title was nice. Maybe the reason why I played Alleyway more was that it wasn't appreciated that much compared to Tetris. Both were (and still are) addictive, but I seemed to favored alleyway more. How was the overall sales for this game? Anthony.... Edited December 20, 2008 by fdurso224
fdurso224 #14 Posted December 20, 2008 Hi guys, You know what? I don't think its a bad idea if someone made homebrew of a Alleyway 2 for any of the Gameboy systems. If only I knew how to program (-_-). Anthony....
cvga #15 Posted December 20, 2008 Alleyway was a great game! I haven't played it in years but I remember wanting to see what the next bonus level picture would be.
Vic George 2K3 #16 Posted December 21, 2008 It seemed like a handheld version of Arkanoid without the power-ups. Mario's appearance in the game was rather unnecessary, just to show that it's a Nintendo game.
+wood_jl #17 Posted December 21, 2008 I love this game. I couldn't believe they made a better "Breakout" game than Atari, but they did. No telling how many similar games (on many systems) that need a paddle but use a D-pad have FAILED to use the scheme of using the buttons for fast or fine control of the paddle. That was brilliant, and seems to have been forgotten. It almost made up for NOT having a paddle!
Nameko #18 Posted December 21, 2008 Alleyway is brilliant. Possibly my most played GB game, along with Revenge of the Gator.
johnny_boy #19 Posted December 21, 2008 Hello, Regarding the idea of an Alleyway sequel, I would venture to say that Kirby's Block Ball fits that bill, even though it came out much, much later (1996). Surprisingly decent, as are all of Hal's Game Boy offerings. Developped by Hal Labs, published by Nintendo. These two have always shared a tight corporate relationship. It's a shame no other block game came out between these two. Sure, there's Breakout in 1995, but that puts it in the same time period as the Kirby one. Spector #20 Posted December 21, 2008 But it's too easy! You can play for ages without a threat of losing a life. I used to really enjoy playing it on a Dreamcast GB emulator, but only with the 3X speed option checked. At normal speed it's got no challenge at all for me. Hi, Interestingly enough, Nintendo never really mention that the operator in the "pill-shape" ship was Mario. It was only written once in a Nintendo Power page section years ago that it was mario by a up-coming journalist in NP. But other then that. Nintendo never officially said that he was mario. A2600 #22 Posted January 7, 2009 Konami released in Japan for the Famicom disk system a game called NAZONOKABE, this game was very similar to Akranoid and yet it was released before Akranoid if you have a famicom disk system I highly recommend NAZONOKABE. If you have a PAL NES Konami released this game under the lable of Palcom.
shadow460 #23 Posted January 7, 2009 Alleyway is OK, but at the time I first got it I also got Crystball for my SuperVision. I think I got more use out of Crystball. They both pale in comparison to Fireball and Super Breakout on the 2600. IMO, those are superior even to Arkanoid. I still have a copy of Alleyway even to this day. Silverfleet #24 Posted January 7, 2009 I picked up a copy of Alleyway a few weeks ago at a pawn shop for a couple bucks. I forgot how much fun it is! I always liked it, but for some reason I never bought it when it was in stores.
