What are your favorite under appreciated nes games?

Recommended Posts

Holy crap, I didn't think of this earlier!

The Adventuresn of Dizzy is aa UNBELIEVEABLE game, Great Graphics, Sound, And gameplay is very fun :)

And I like Firehawk, Too. Excelent from above airplane/jet game. Yet again, Great graphics, Gameplay, And sound.

I think Camerica is one of the most underrated NES game company. All their games had good graphics and sound, Although sometimes the gameplay was not the best.

Actually, the overhead view, scrolling shooter is probably the most underrated genre on the NES. The best-known NES game of that type is Ikari Warriors, and it's probably the worst of the bunch - the NES port of it is terrible, as are its awful sequels. But besides Jackal and Guerrilla War, you have Iron Tank, Commando, Heavy Barrel, and Vindicators, all solid, fun shooters.

Heavy Barrel is the best overhead shooter for the NES. That game kicks ass!!

No it isn't. Burai Fighter is! :P

Really, Burai Fighter is part overhead and part side scrolling SHMUP. It's easy at first, but things get out of hand fast when you start on the higher difficulty settings.

It's a little merciful, though. The walls aren't lethal on most stages, but they can crush you against the screen's edge. When you die, you only lose about two thirds of your armament. If you have certain weapons powered up but aren't using them, you will get to keep them even if you lose a life.

Memorizing patterns is a must for this game. That won't get you through the bosses, though, you'll have to play those fights by ear, and it's not easy.

Surprisingly enjoyable fan translations:

Moon Crystal

Prince of Persia type side-scrolling adventure game. Nicely detailed and balanced.

Nekketsu/River City High sports games AKA Crash 'n the Boys (Super Dodgeball, Ice Ice Hockey, Nekketsu! Street Basket, Nintendo World Cup or Nekketsu Soccer League, Crash 'n the Boys: Street Challenge + the previous one)

Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu/Downtown Tournament

Chaotic fighting game with creative level design.

Captain Tsubasa I (Tecmo Cup Soccer) and Captain Tsubasa II

Origin of Final Fantasy X's Blitz Ball mini-game.

I also enjoy the Free Fall prototype, which turned up as the fish + basket game in Sunday Funday. Who would've thought a christian game had such a dark concept to begin with?

Almost forgot to mention the European + Japanese version of Ghostbusters 2 (New Ghostbusters 2), by Hal. Creative and fun use of a license. North Americans got ripped on this one.

I'm only now starting to collect for the NES and my favorites so far are:

Pinball

Galaga

Defender II

Balloon Fight

The Popeye and Burgertime conversions are excellent too.

just to name a few...

Yo! Noid

Jaws

To The Earth

Gumshoe

Jaws is an old favorite of mine too. It's kinda like a classic arcade shooter kinda game but set in the ocean with a diver instead of a ship and crabs, jelly fish, and sharks instead of enemy ships. The only downside of the game is the final encounter with Jaws has really bad collision detection and it doesn't seem fun at all. Other than that though this game is fun and intense.

The Terminator, Mystery Quest, Immortal, Wall Street Kid, Clash at Demonhead, Legacy of the Wizard, Snake Rattle N Roll and Nightshade... all of those games go unnoticed and are quite fun if you put the proper effort into them.

Oh, man The Immortal was great. I never cared for the NES version, though, I always felt the Sega Genesis version was VASTLY superior, in terms of graphics and the much lauded gore factor. Nothing like cutting an orc's face off!

Sega Genesis is from the same time as Super Nintendo, so its bound to have better graphics but better graphics dont make a "VASTLY superior" game.

Wow, thanks for that bit of info. I would have never known that.

The Sega Genesis game IS superior in every way, however. I never had a Genny growing up, and was stuck with the NES, but the Nintendo kept pace with Sega by producing high quality, addicting games. As far as The Immortal was concerned, the NES vesion is a basically a watered down version. It has none of the gore for which the game was famous, and the graphics are, naturally, no where near as good as the Genesis version. I will admit the music in the Genesis version is lacking, but it's still better than what the NES could produce. The NES version retained the base gameplay that made it so fun, but it's like the choice in driving a Porsche or a Pinto. Both achieve the same thing, but which are you going to choose?

Feeling rather grumpy today, on your man-period?

First off, you took my sentence out of context and second you made a complete jackass of yourself; by trying to make me seem stupid.

I thought the Immortal for Snes was toned down because of Nintendos anti-violence gaming stance at the time, while Sega had Splatterhouse and Mortal Kombat w/ fatalities. I like both versions

I agree, the versions all have their own special feel to them; just because something is more toned down doesnt make it a bad game.

I'll enthusiastically second Legacy of the Wizard, Amagon, Monster Party, Firehawk, Uforia, and Bird Week. Some of the others that have been named are great games, too, but were widely praised by critics at the time even if they weren't big sellers, like Zanac.

Four more that come to mind:

Captain Comic - still my favorite unlicensed NES game; a vast improvement on the PC original. Unforgiving but very well-constructed.

Little Samson - I love switchable-character platformers, and this is one of the very finest examples. Excellent late title.

Family Tennis - I've just discovered this gem. Its play dynamics are closer to real tennis than any other title I've seen.

Xexyz - some of the best tunes I've heard in an NES game, this platformer has an appealing vibe, with a variety of stages and some charming quirks. I've always been surprised at how overlooked this one is.

Didn't know about Firehawk. Looks like a fancier Raid on Bungeling Bay, in a good way. Can't go wrong with that!

Camerica's NES games always were instantly recognisable by the unique music they used. Y'know, their high end melodies? Like C64 chiptunes, someone on Youtube said.

Super Mario Bros. 2.

Much better than the japanese version in my opinion.

Super Mario Bros. 2: Doki Doki Panic is a great game; I love it also it had brought alot into the Mario Universe and most people tend to forget that.
