VideoFever1982 #1 Posted December 20, 2008 I go out every trash night which is wednesday night. I usually do pretty good. Things like a vintage 70's Kirby vacuum to several computers, a laptop and a tv. Last wednesday, i found these. Mint condition controllers. SNES and Virtual Boy. fdurso224 #2 Posted December 20, 2008 (edited) Hi guys, In the words of Ron Simmons from WWE......DAMN!!! I can see the Super NES Controllers getting canned for now particular reason , but a Virtual Boy controller? Ah-ah, that's tragic & outrageous (0_0). Anthony.... VideoFever1982 #4 Posted December 20, 2008 (edited) I have found all kinds of neat stuff that people have thrown away. people still wonder why I do it. Score for you! Tell me about it. I've found a dreamcast unit complete, xbox complete, Intellivision stuff, coleco, 2600's, nes decks, snes decks, a turbografx complete unit and boxes for several systems all in the last 3 years. fsurso224: what particular reason they would throw out snes controllers? carmel_andrews #6 Posted December 20, 2008 now if i could find a 130st (yes i mean a 130st) or a 1450xld or a pal proto 1200xl in the rubbish that would be the best christmas present ever
jhd #7 Posted December 20, 2008 I found parts of an Atari 2600 and cartridges a few months ago -- unfortunately it had been driven over by a car. I managed to salvage a joystick and an unidentified cartridge (the case was crushed, but the board looks OK). Otherwise I have found various cables, a microphone, and similar types of things; I passed on a Zip drive . Fortunately it was all on the top of the bin, in a plastic container, so it was "clean". Crazy Climber #9 Posted December 20, 2008 Do you actually open the cans and start sifting or do you just grab whatever is in plain view? Just wondering
Wickeycolumbus #10 Posted December 20, 2008 Nice score, wish people threw away those kinds of things in my area
AtariLeaf #11 Posted December 20, 2008 I found a Pentium 3 computer sitting beside a dumpster a few months ago. Needed a new power supply but it works just fine.
nathanallan #12 Posted December 20, 2008 (edited) When I'm in full-bore salvage mood, open the cans, yes. For safety I use gloves sometimes and never make a mess wherever I go (so as to not get the police called on me). If there's something in plain view that's a good indicator to go though all/some of it. Edited December 20, 2008 by nathanallan
Royalshin #13 Posted December 20, 2008 Well to most people in the USA it is just a OOOLLLLDdddd toy. I remember glearing at those SNES controllers when I was younger. I would think " wow, neato, and to the max " and then imagine sniffing and biting there plastic goodness. I wonder how those controllers smell now

Reaperman #15 Posted December 20, 2008 (edited) so nobody's comming out against this? what the hell? sure once in a while there are nice things in the trash, and in most places it'd be legal, but roaming around the neighborhood opening other people's cans is not going to win any friends at all. It's *EXTREMELY* creepy. Actually if I saw it, I think I'd start hauling my own to the dump for a while to keep the sickos out of it. very few types of people I can imagine rummaging through my trash, but retrogamers weren't on my radar until now. fdurso224 #16 Posted December 20, 2008 Hi guys, The last time I did some dumpster diving was last year. I actually found a cuckoo clock that was complete, but needed some work. I fixed it and sold it for $250 bucks. Anthony....
Reaperman #17 Posted December 20, 2008 (edited) The last time I did some dumpster diving was last year... while curbside trash picking may be legal in many places (city ordinances aside) dumpster diving is most certainly not--it's trespass and theft... of course both are well into the realm of 'wrong,' and again, *EXTREMELY* creepy. it's sad when the guy in new orleans has to be the moral compass. Lemmi #18 Posted December 20, 2008 i found a 2600 Space Invaders cart when i was a kid and in 1996ish i found a working CD-i 220 with 2 controllers and 8 games (the door doesnt open but taking the top off and manually ejecting the CD works perfect) i also found a working Soundesign rack system with dual cassette deck and 5 cd carousel about 3 months ago (the only thing missing was the top cover to the CD area) found 50 vinyl records, and a dildo called sqirmmy (which i put under a near by Vans wiper blade) i found a mid size pinball machine once when i was about 12, me and my grandpa tinkered with it and got it to work for about 5 months before it stopped working again when i throw electronics out they are gutted and torn apart (i take the screws and any other part i might use later on) the last thing i threw out was an old zenith monitor used with a 1982 IBM computer i took the back off and gutted the wires and junk and stuffed it with a half gallon milk jug filled with water just for fun and someone took it i only stop to check out houses that have tons of stuff on the lawn, most of the time i wont stop and get out unless something catches my eye, and i stop for certain pieces of wood 2x4's, 4x4's, plastic lattice (i found 6 sheets of it this past summer)
nathanallan #19 Posted December 20, 2008 How I do things is nothing compared to how the people coming across the border act. They leave messes, take anything that's not semi-broken and tend to fight, actually getting physical, over things that some places throw out. I'm a lightweight doing it once or twice a month and if I see anything on a whim. Not even a hobby. So go ahead and be creeped out, it's all good, be glad you don't have thugs roaming the streets hunting for things and starting crap over throw-out items. Jakenut86 #20 Posted December 20, 2008 My uncle used to work at a dump and got all kinds of stuff. One time he even got a riding lawn mower that was almost brand new, he fixed it up and sold it for over $700! Id say he used to make more selling the stuff he got than actually working, thats why when he was told he could no longer take the stuff he quit. cvga #21 Posted December 20, 2008 We have people who drive through our neighborhood in old trucks with stuff (trash) piled over the edges. I don't like the idea of people sifting through my trash while it's sitting right in front of my house although I don't necessarily mind if they take something that's sitting out in plain view beside the trash. Reaperman #24 Posted December 20, 2008 (edited) My uncle used to work at a dump and got all kinds of stuff. see now that I don't really see a problem with that at all as long as the dump okays it. Really it's mostly how rude/creepy it is to dig through trash in front of somebody's house that I object to. and I'm still very shocked that so few people have a problem with trash picking. VideoFever1982 #25 Posted December 20, 2008 Here, it's fine as long as you don't make a mess. Going to every house is not necessary either as i don't go through bags. You can drive by and tell if there is something good. I only take whats visible. For example, these controllers were sitting on top of a box. Every year in April and October, There is this bulk cleanup deal they have every year in this one city that is once a week in these 2 months where people put out stereos, receivers, computers, tv's, games everything you can imagine and it's so widespread, you have to stop at nearly every house and there are people all over riding in vans and trucks. We go every year and clear usually over $1000 in free items and goodies. I accumulated 5 2600's just doing this. Tons of items. Not to mention, bookshelving, dvd players, and some high end equipment because everybody there is "well off" and has enough money to throw these things away just to turn around and upgrade with new items. Most of this stuff is sitting outside of $500.000+ homes
