bones #6 Posted December 23, 2008 If it were that simple it wouldn't need a Wiki! I'd never heard of these generation terms before. I picked the 16 bit era, great competition from Nintendo and Sega led to some great games. Good times for fans of shooters, fighters, and RPGs.
Reaperman #7 Posted December 23, 2008 (edited) oh, probably 4th gen console gaming--16-bit goodness, and I even probably count jaguar in it, though nobody else does. I have them all, and love them all in their own way. A lot of people look at the 4th gen as nothing but a big 'console war.' In a way it was, with consumer-grade systems talking about silly attachments, fx chips and 'blast processing.' For some reason everything was about sounding bigger/better/faster than the next guy. But in other ways it was all kind of rendered completely hilarious by Neo Geo. Gaming's ferrari. I'm not too big of a fan of any console older than this (outside of maybe nes) and it seems that everything older that was worth a damn was on a computer of some sort. I don't really think they get grouped into generations as much... Edited December 23, 2008 by Reaperman
AtticGamer #8 Posted December 23, 2008 (edited) The fifth generation, the PlayStation is my favourite console of all time. Such great classics like Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Alien Trilogy, the best version of Doom and Doom II, Battle Arena Toshinden and many others populated this era. And most of all, CD! Glorious Red Book audio already demonstrated by the PCE CD and Mega CD. The fourth one is still good though but I don't like the third one. I was never very fond of the MS and NES, and I actually dislike the Mario and Zelda games on the latter. Edited December 23, 2008 by AtticGamer
chrisbid #9 Posted December 23, 2008 i dont like the generation classifications, they are too narrow. There wasnt much gameplay difference between NES and SNES games for example i prefer eras based on control schemes joystick era (Odyssey-Colecovision) joypad era (NES-Jaguar) analog stick era (Saturn-Xbox 360) motion sensor era (Wii/PS3) there are tweeners even with this broad definition, the 7800 was on the market during the NES/SMS days, but its games and control scheme lean it more toward the joystick era, and the Xbox 360 (as of yet) does not have motion sensing controls (but it could add them later, like the saturn and playstation added analog after launch)
1982VideoGames #10 Posted December 23, 2008 For me the 2nd generation (Atari & Colecovision) edges out the 4th generation (Genesis & SNES) even though I think they were both the best.
sandmountainslim #11 Posted December 23, 2008 For me the 2nd generation (Atari & Colecovision) edges out the 4th generation (Genesis & SNES) even though I think they were both the best. For me it was a choice between 2nd and 3rd. I am an Atari Fanatic but U gotta love the NES. I own an SNES but no games for it except a couple sports titles (not into that) so it very well may be great. I always enjoyed the Genesis. Wp
wccw mark #12 Posted December 23, 2008 4th gen all the way!!
nathanallan #13 Posted December 23, 2008 I only picked Forth Gen bacause of all the add-ons and attachments that were available. And the next eras of gaming were able to improve that particular era, as far as I can tell. TecToy has done very neat things with old Sega 16-bit technology. Handhelds, newer consoles, reworking of internals... I just wish they would make a new Genesis that has ethernet on it to take advantage of the older SegaNet and X-Band ideas that didn't last or work out. ApolloBoy #14 Posted December 24, 2008 So far it looks as though I'm the only one who voted for the third generation (NES, SMS, 7800). No love for the NES?

Jakenut86 #16 Posted December 24, 2008 I voted for the 5th generation. The Jag is my favorite, It is the only system I use every day!!
Christophero Sly #17 Posted December 24, 2008 I have the most nostalgia for the 2600 and the various home computers of the 2nd generation, so that's my vote. However, I'm quite fond of the SNES/Genesis era and I'm a big fan of the PS1 too.
Atarifever #18 Posted December 24, 2008 I used to always say 4th generation (and at the time it was likely my favorite ever), but my love for the 7800 and the Red Label 2600 library has over powered that and left me a third generation guy. I'm also a big fan of the Master System (one of the very few systems not to be axed as I've sold my collection). The only thing I don't like from that generation is the NES, and even that has a very interesting library I enjoy reading about. I also very much like second and fourth (the O2 and Genesis are the only other systems I haven't cut from my collection as a result of this).
edweird13 #19 Posted December 24, 2008 Second gen I had 2600 TI994/A and C=64 back in the day.
CGQuarterly #20 Posted December 24, 2008 I voted fourth. I may be wrong, but I think how one will vote in this poll has a LOT to do with how old the voter is. The 16 bit era will always be my favorite, but it is for reasons of nostalgia, rather than the games from that era actually being better. I am 31 years old, so the 16 bit era occurred while I has in high school, which is when I was most into playing games. Chris
chuckwalla #21 Posted December 24, 2008 I'm a second and then fourth generation video gamer all the way. Nostalgia, the huge number of fun titles, excellent arcade translations (ie. ColecoVision, Atari 5200 and 7800), and simplicity of play make the second generation tops for me. But, with the advent of faster processors and ability to achieve the degree of graphics and sound that truly brought home stunning and exciting sports, action/adventure, and shooter titles (ie. NHL, Madden, Sonic, MUSHA, Thunderforce), the fourth generation allowed a quantum leap in the video gaming experience without sacrificing gameplay. I've found that anything above 16-bit is not for me as I had a N64 and Playstation, each for a short time, and just couldn't get into them (to me they were sacrificing gameplay for super graphics and sound). fdurso224 #22 Posted December 24, 2008 Simple enough. Wp Hi Willy, You bet your sweet grits it is. I would say all the generations. Because, I love them all so very, very much. I can't wait for the 8th generation in the immediate future. Anthony....
fiddlepaddle #23 Posted December 24, 2008 I'm for Star Trek, the Next Generation, the me generation, the Pepsi generation, the lost generation, generation X, the TV generation, and avoiding the generation gap. Generations do not really make much sense when technologies leap-frog each other over and over. What generation are we in when it comes to automobile technology? maybe 104? To answer your question, I'd have to say I like cartridge game systems. Or maybe those prior to the "movie" style games. Or those that don't require a 128 page instruction manual and a 16 hour training mode to enjoy. Or anything old enough to be worthless to the people selling it to me. Or wherever I have such an abundance of games I couldn't possibly get bored. It seems to change over time, but one thing has remained consistent: I've never been interested in the stuff that's currently being promoted, hyped, and coveted by the conspicuous consumers. +doctorclu #24 Posted December 24, 2008 (edited) Hmmm... Wikia Gaming has the Jaguar in the 4th gen... http://gaming.wikia.com/wiki/Video_game_console_generations However I do believe it belongs in the beginning of the 5th generation (as according to Wiki) due to it's introduction of 64 bit tech. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_console Wow this is a hard choice. I *LOVE* the Jaguar, but the other systems in fifth gen while nice stepping stones (N64, Sega Saturn, Playstation) were to me systems that were kinda blah. A lot of games with the video sequences sequences. DAMN YOU DRAGON'S LAIR!!! You ruined games for a while. LOL! Yes the Playstation had a good start, but to me did not really get great till the Playstation 2. Sadly, the N64 was a good powerhouse system with no CD. The rest had CD's that were trying to figure out how to effectively use one. Sixth gen... Dreamcast (*LOVE* The Dreamcast), Playstation 2 (with Guitar Hero & Dance Dance Revolution, Rockband), the xBox brought me "Red vs. Blue" with Halo, and the GameCube was not stellar by any means, but had a good dance game of it's own and a AWESOME Gameboy adaptor. Honestly, my vote... sixth gen. 2nd gen with the 2600, Coleco, Intellivision, 5200, Odessessy 2, Vectrex, and technically the 7800 (and the time of the 8-bit computers)... that would be a close second. But sixth gen lately was (and still is) a lot of fun. Seventh gen with the Wii... lol!! Well as a group so far I have to say Wii is stealing the show. A very lopsided generation from my view. I still think sixth will be best overal for a bit. Edited December 24, 2008 by doctorclu
pinball22 #25 Posted December 24, 2008 I picked 5th... I love the N64 incredibly much, and I like the PSX and Saturn too. I almost picked 2nd, though, as obviously I'm a huge fan of the 2600. 4th would be 3rd for me... there's an awful lot of stuff I enjoy on the Genesis and SNES.
