Reaperman #26 Posted December 24, 2008 Hmmm... Wikia Gaming has the Jaguar in the 4th gen...http://gaming.wikia.com/wiki/Video_game_console_generations and I thought I was the only person who thought jag was 4th gen. it was definately in the 4th gen 'number wars', and the game quality was clearly more 4th gen (especially when 4th gen systems started using 'helper chips'). perhaps the best way to handle it it to split the 5th gen--there're WAY too many systems in it, and systems like playstation and saturn, are worlds ahead of, say, jaguar, cd32, cdi and neo geo cd. I say 3do is the start of 5th and a half gen, and everything before it is pretty well 5th gen.
darthkur #27 Posted December 24, 2008 To answer your question, I'd have to say I like cartridge game systems. Or maybe those prior to the "movie" style games. Or those that don't require a 128 page instruction manual and a 16 hour training mode to enjoy. Or anything old enough to be worthless to the people selling it to me. Or wherever I have such an abundance of games I couldn't possibly get bored. I couldn't agree more. I disagree with a couple of the "Wiki" definitions in being that I would consider the Bally Astrocade , Fairchild Channel F and O2 in the same category/generation as the VCS, CV INTV, etc.
BydoEmpire #28 Posted December 24, 2008 I voted 2nd gen (Atari, Inty, CV), but that'd be followed closely by whatever gen number was the Dreamcast->Xbox era. I wasn't that into gaming in the 32-bit era. I liked some n64 stuff, and the RE series (and classic compilations) on the ps1, but I didn't spend much time on any of the systems. The DC got me back into gaming in a big way, and I had tons of favorites on all four systems. I put Phantasy Star Online in my top 5 games of all time. I still play the 2nd gen stuff quite a bit, but I rarely ever play anything from the NES through the 32-bit consoles these days. 2nd gen games certainly get extra points for longevity. What's the 1st gen, Pong and other dedicated systems? Never really had one, so I can't comment. For me: #1 Atari/Inty/CV #2 DC/ps2/xbox/ngc #3 NES/SMS/7800 #5 SNES/Genny/Turbo #4 360/ps3/wii #6 PS1/N64/Saturn

Wickeycolumbus #34 Posted December 26, 2008 Fourth generation for sure, the SNES is my all time favorite console.
shadow460 #35 Posted December 27, 2008 fifth generation here. Red Alert 1 brought to consoles with multiplayer modes intact, a new direction for the Final Fantasy franchise, a sequel to Shining in the Darkness, Goldeneye/Perfect Dark, wipEout, a serious effort at both full analog controls and light guns, what more could I have asked for? That's not to mention the PC games of the time like 1998 Sega Rally, FF8, and Unreal Tournament '99. That's followed closely by the second generation. I've got a giant collection of 2600 games, and that does have to stand for something. As for portable systems, its a little different. The third gen stands head and shoulders above the rest, followed closely by the sixth gen with its PSP and Game Boy SP.
rpgfaker #36 Posted December 31, 2008 3rd generation...Castlevania II:Simon's Quest still gets played once a week. And Ultima Warriors of Destiny is high on the list. The Immortal, Zelda, Times of Lore, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out yeah..NesterJ gets much love on my PSP
Royalshin #37 Posted December 31, 2008 What are you saying? Wikipedia is not the best source for anything. I would say whatever your makemup list comprise the PCE/SNES/NES/MSX2/MD/SATURN/SMS and that would be the third generation in my book. 2d gorgeous with 3d bliss Why not the other ones. At home Pong has only one game An arcade has only one game on it PC's change too much. The Atari has too many pixels for sprites The Commendore is European The Amiga is a tool. I can't say the N64 since that is a abomination. The PSX is just the SNES with Compact Disc. The game music also hurts my head. I turn it to lowest and still hear it. The Dreamcast was a waste of time and effort. The X-box is just FPS machine The GCN dropped out too early The PS2 has N64 ports and is just another SNES flagship. The PS3 would be my most favorite However 360 has the same power and the Wii is just a GCN gone wireless
Shannon #38 Posted December 31, 2008 I'd have to say.. 2nd 4th 6th and 7th... In that order... Seems like I had a pattern of skipping the odd numbered generations.

SegaShooters #41 Posted December 31, 2008 I'm a big fan of the fourth gen (Sega Genesis obviously) but have been partaking of second gen games more and more. So many systems and games to play!
nonner242 #42 Posted December 31, 2008 My vote 4th Most good gaming "AWE" came from this time. It had Alot of the "Wow look how awesome that was!" First time for some game audio off CD...like Sega CD SNES had kick butt sound too. And the GFX took a huge leap. Remember Contra Alien Wars...Castlevania 4,Earthworm Jim 2,Super Metroid,Lunars,Phantasy Stars? All SWEET! First time for LOTS of Shooters/Fighters/RPG's to really shine! But I do have a STRONG love for the oddballs like: Vectrex Amiga Jaguar But what about my NEO-GEO where does it REALLY fall. I love the system, would of almost voted "it's" gen but was not sure how it would fit? Its been around from 1988/89-2004. Its was the MOST powerful home system for its time by far! Some games still shock me "Metal Slug 3/Blazing Star/KOF 2003/Mark of the Wolves/SVC Chaos" that they run on system build in the late 80's and really look GREAT! kevincal #43 Posted January 1, 2009 For me it's a tie between 3rd, 4th & 5th generations... Impossible for me to choose. the Jag belongs in the 5th gen though... If I HAD to pick one though... 5th gen for me with the Jag included! Jag, PS & N64 is a lethal combo...
Greg2600 #44 Posted January 1, 2009 Fourth Generation hands down. I've acquired several systems I didn't have in the past, but the 4th was the only one I had two of back then, Genesis and SNES. Great 2D graphics and sound, incredibly fluid and fun games, perfect controllers.

Royalshin #46 Posted January 1, 2009 Um, what? These are all the generations I do not like in terms of my least favorite. I mean there is alot of stuff on all those systems I could banter on and on for ages but when you get down to it 2d is videogames and 3d is just a gere. A Sprite #47 Posted January 1, 2009 Growing up poor gives me cause to look at this a bit different... 2nd generation games I started with: ET and Demons to Diamonds. 3rd: Super Mario Bros and Duckhunt. 4th: Super Star Wars and Lagoon. 5th Tempest 2k. 6th Sonic Adventure and Sega Swirl. 7th Lego Indy, Kung Fu Panda, and Soul Calibur 4...and then I discover a hidden game on the harddrive! Plus 15 demos! And I can download more demos at will! It's insane, some of these demos contain hours worth of gameplay! Every other generation is screwed by comparison. My inner child wouldn't ever look at me again if I voted for any of the previous generations...I've no regrets.

If I HAD to pick one though... 5th gen for me with the Jag included! Jag, PS & N64 is a lethal combo... Like "toxic" lethal? I don't know why you would toss the Jag in with that crowd. Now the Jag looks guilty by association. I'd say I liked that generation if you removed the N64 and PS1, and just had the Jag and Saturn. As it is, the PS1 and N64 drag the whole thing deep into F territory to me. Seems a lot of people like mud though. They even complain when a Jag or Saturn game has pretty colours instead of mud. Clear, crisp colours with no textures seem to have been avoided in favour of every game looking like the bottom of my shoe on the winning consoles.
