Article on Old School Gaming

Decent if half-assed article.

I was reading the comments underneath and this one from some punk should give us insight on how the Generation Y crowd sees things.

"I have a PS3 and a PS2 and a PSone and grew up in the nineties anyting older than PS2 games seems like junk to me, the nostalgia only grips those alive when those games were out"

-David

Believe that??? This twit considers an SNES, NES or 2600 to be beneath him and not be worth his time.

You know, I've been saying this for a while that I feel sad for the kids who have only grown up with the 3d video games and not with any of the 2d games. I honestly believe that game developers achieved games that were a lot closer to perfection when they were 2d rather than the 3d games of today. Once you go into that 3rd dimension you add an exponential amount of variables that can really screw with the formula (the main one being 3d level design; something I find myself saying in 3d games often is "Where the f*** am I supposed to go!?!").

You know, it pains me to say this but I can understand how the kids would not like the 2600 because it is just so far removed from what they are used to and looks alien to them but how can they say the same for the NES and SNES and the Genesis?

Of course the Atari is my most loved system but I love the NES almost as well. I guess I am opposite of the youngsters as I see the X360 etc. as things I don't really care to own.

Yeah I agree, the 8-bit and 16-bit eras are 2 generations that anybody who likes video games should be well-acquainted with. I think it was that generation where video game quality peaked and it has just kinda slid downhill ever since. The problem is that today with games costing $20 million to make the game industry is afraid to take risks anymore. I mean c'mon, when was the last time someone made something new? How many times do we have to keep playing the same first person shooter game and Mario sequel?

As for the 2600, it is definitely difficult to get into those games if you didn't grow up in that era. However, I think it might just be a matter of A) Finding the right games and B) Playing it with someone who did grow up in that era. About 15 years ago or so I played Space Invaders, Frogger, Carnival, Q*Bert, etc with my dad and that was a lot of fun. Those are all games I could pick up today and enjoy. But I'm not sure if I would've ever gotten myself to play games that old if it weren't for him.

Children should be seen and not heard.

One bad apple don't spoil the whole bunch. My 10-year-old nephew loves some of the old Atari 2600 games. Ignorance and snootiness don't come from belonging to any particular generation, they can be found in individuals of every generation.

Portal, Braid, Geometry Wars, N+, Little Big Planet, PacMan CE - let's not turn into bitter old men. This generation is one of the better ones...

You know, you have a point. There is a lot of fun in the new stuff. It's just so darned expensive until something better comes along.

what the hell is a generation Y (why(?)) anyway? is there an accepted definition of what a generation x is vs a gen y?

google seems to suggest that I'm a gen y who has been gaming since about 1984/5...

I think somebody really needs to shore up these generational definitions for me.

though maybe I am a gen y--since I can't ever figure out what 2600 fans are on about... especially when there were perfectly acceptable 800 series computers to game on.

To the OP: I can forgive this and the guy actually has a point. How much of your attraction to classic games is simply because you grew up with them and have fond memories of them? *Some* of the games are great in their own right, but most of them are mediocre or just plain crap. When I was younger I didn't care about the previous generation's crap either. It meant nothing to me, and there was new stuff that was great. Same now and as it always will be.

Generally "Generation Y" is someone born between 1980 and 1999 give or take a year or so. The Post-GenXer's.

with Gen X being those born between 1965 and 1980.

I had the same attitude when I was a kid too. I had no interest in 2600 games, Pong or anything with vectors, they were all just too primitive. All I cared about was the latest arcade games, Colecovision, then Commodore 64 and then NES when that came out, etc.

Gaming has always been about the cutting edge and abandonment of the previous generation. Nowadays I love the vector games, and all the early stuff like Pong. Partly for the simplicity and partly in admiration of an era of games that were the creation of one or two people rather than the huge crews of today.

First off there is no such thing as Generation Y. It is just another Newspaper Monkey trying to make another waste of time definition up. If there was then here is the explation.

If your on bringe of insanity trying to figure our life then your Generation X. You enjoy the internet by phone line then your generation X. If your still using a windows 98 machine then your Generation X. If you don't know what a Emo is then your Generation X. If you dream about Stephanie from Lazy Town then your Generation X. I think JC is still alive singing with Kid Rock or even remember JC then your Generation X. If you remember Puff Daddy then your Generation X.

If Digital only means digital clock then your Generation X.

If your playing Wii workout then your Generation Y. If you lived with internet by phone line then your generation Y.

If you got one of those Quazi neo Apple's in house your Generation Y. If you don't know what a Metal Head is then your Generation Y. If you dream about Talor Swift then your Genaration Y. If you think JC stands only for JCpenny or reminds you of J-low then your defenently Generation Y at this moment. If you only remember Pdiddy then your Generation Y.

If digital

Generation X

Basically a big advertisment. In general is the generation that was going to destory or turn society upside down. These are people who lived during the ninities and was expected to make society crumble. You remember all those Future Disaster movies where everything just kept on getting worst. That was about generation X outcome. Generation X grewed up with the post 80's influences that continued into 2000. With ideas like.

The millenium

The Apocolypse

The cometh of Chris

Y2K.

Generation X was mostly about

looking cool

Talking cool

Dressing the way you want to

Enviromental

Good Rap music with lots of profanities

Death Metal

Played the Sims

In general Generation X was about freedom.

Right now generation X is the adults with the children and could careless about anything but there jobs along with a few making the best of the situation.

Generation Y

Also know as the Barney generation. Where people grewed up with ratings. The is where the Y comes from. Since there was

ratings on the videogames systems along with television program shows. Shows like Reboot for example. Keep in mind most generation Y does not understand this at all and is now the teenagers of today.

In general most are into.

Yogioh

High school musical

Naruto

Lolita = dolls and super girly dresses

Lolita = that meaning from old mans book.

Emo's

And plays the Sims 2

Listens to Tokyo Hotel and made them won an award.

In general Generation Y is about the people who thinks nothing of anything and plays with Icons on there shiney new Apple G4 and there 500GB only for $100

Generation Y is playing sims2 right now, Smoking cigarrettes, and dressing up like "Gangsta" shouting profanities.

I've been gaming since Pong, I'm 43. I still love the classics. Always will. It's kind of sad that this kid doesn't care about classic videogames. That's like saying it's not worth listening to the Beatles, Creedence or the Eagles or not worth my time to drive a '58 Vette or '65 Mustang (if he drives yet). He won't understand how we feel until he grows up and his PS1, 2 and 3 are as old as our Atari's and NES systems. Then he will realize the error of his ways.
