7800Lover #1 Posted December 25, 2008 For Xmas, I'm getting Keystone Kapers and Star Raiders for the 2600. While I've played Keystone Kapers, I've never played Star Raiders before. I understand it's a mix of shooter and strategy. How is the game anyway?
shadow460 #2 Posted December 26, 2008 Ever played Phaser Patrol or Starmaster? They're very similar. Star Raiders itself is OK, but not outstanding. I never could get into it much, really, like I could the others.
Lord Thag #3 Posted December 26, 2008 I loved Star Raiders! Think of it as a first person space shooter that requires energy management, damage control, and the reflexes of a thirteen year old hyped up on Mountain Dew It's very fun. The 'strategy map' is less developed than Starmaster's, but the actual combat is lightyears better. When i was a kid, I could get the 'Star Raider' ranking on the hard levels regularly. Very fun game! Just give yourself some time to get good at it. It's frustrating at first. Let us know how it goes.
7800Lover #4 Posted December 31, 2008 I received Star Raiders at last. It's fun overall. The controls though take some getting used to. Pushing the joystick up makes you dive and pushing it down makes you climb which is not something I am used to. And the only skill rank I attained so far was "cook". Still, it's a good game. I picked it up in sealed box w/controller for cheap a couple years ago; It's neat to have for 2600 but you MUST play the 8-bit computer version or the 5200 version to really appreciate the game. They're so much superior it can not be stressed enough. I must admit, I was impressed to see the game even pulled off at all on the VCS.
potatohead #6 Posted January 1, 2009 I'll second this. I was impressed with the 2600 game actually. They got a lot of it done. Play it on 5200 / 8bitter. It's a true classic.

calfranklin #8 Posted January 2, 2009 How would you rate the 5200 version in comparison to the 2600 version? I was never really impressed with the graphics (or lack of it) in either the 2600 or 8-bit version), but I did like the hyper warping mode.
potatohead #9 Posted January 3, 2009 Apart from the fancy rainbow fuji logo, I think it's the same game. Didn't play much 5200. Kind of want one, but never get around to it. The 8 bit game is just excellent. Graphically, it's aged some, but that isn't really the focus, IMHO. Where it's at with this title is the strategy, and action. Very challenging game, and it's got serious replay value. The 2600 one captures a lot of the feel, but is just less subtle in how it actually plays. Trinity #10 Posted January 3, 2009 Here is a review of it for the 5200.
