Is there a 520 STFM public domain Ram upgrade out there?

You can upgrade some (to 1MB) by just adding more chips, but it depends on your soldering skills and what revision motherboard you have.

Try here. You can use the 2.5MB upgrade and only do half of it and get to 1MB. Also look at the upgrade that uses SIMMS - Less soldering.
