My friend says the 120GB hard drive on an XBOX 360 is useless. Well, he said this before they allowed you to copy games to the hard drive.

I have the 120GB Elite and I only have 80GB free. I only have one disc installed to the hard drive. The rest are things I've purchased or other stuff.

I only have about 50 gigs left. The rest are XBLA games, DLC, Xbox Originals, and videos. I think I only have two games installed.

I've got a 120gig (the homebrewed upgrade to the 20gig unit), and it's down to like 46gigs free. No HDD installs either.

A good 4 gigs of it is Fallout 3 saves (seriously!).

I let Oblivion saves fill up my drive and then I go through and clean them out. I have all the Oblivion addons and the expansion installed. I only have a 20g (got my premium at midnight release night) so Oblivion uses most of the space. Still I generally keep it around 8 gig free.

Yep. I never asked how big your drives were or said anything in the poll about them. I just mentioned how big mine was so people knew.

Don't forget that there are some of us out there that only have a 20gb hard dvie.

I wonder if the 360 is like a computer. They say to keep 10% of your computer's hard drive free for Windows to use and if you don't I notice a real slow down.

Yeah but the poll seems kinda useless if it is all inclusive. Hence my comment.

50% of a 20 gig is far less than 50% if a 120gig. :D

Yeah, you make a good point there.

Just a couple of DL'ed game demos, or 400+ Fallout3 saves will just about half fill a 20gig.

That 10% rule on computers deals with "virtual memory" which is simply swap space. On Unix systems swap space tends to be a static partition reserved for this use. The way swap space works is simple. If the system's memory use exceeds available memory the OS will swap some data to the drive to make memory available and will swap in and out as needed. This is very slow in comparison to the speed of the memory so it is something you don't want happening a lot. If you have a lot of swapping going on your system is going to be slow anyway and it means you don't have enough memory for what you are trying to do.

Now that people have 500GB - 1TB drive space in their systems the 10% rule is not really right. If you reserve 512MB for swap space then you should be more than fine. I have 1GB swap space but that is only because I set up a raid partition for swap use with 512MB per drive. With 4GB of memory it doesn't matter much most of the time. It is rarely used.

On the XBox and 360 games will utilize the hard drive to cache data. On the XBox all games require this space since the XBox required a drive but on the 360 only some games do it and they don't require it as the drive may not be there. Games will utilize it for faster loading of maps, items, etc. One game where you will see the advantage of drive cacheing is in Oblivion (and I would imagine that means Fallout 3 as well) when you are walking in and out towns, buildings, etc. If you have been outside, go into a building, and walk outside again the load is very quick. This is because of cache. You don't have to worry about keeping that space open though. The 360 reserves a certain amount of the drive space automatically. Even if you completely delete everything from the drive (through the system interface) there will still be about 7 gigs in use. This is space the 360 has reserved for system use and you can't access it.

Its hard for me to say since I have several 360's. I think the 20 Gig I had at one point was down to 5 Gig left at one point. I deleted all the video's and moved game saves not needed anymore and it brought it up to like 9 Gig. That's with like 90 Arcade titles installed. I don't usually keep any more than a couple video's and/or game demo's, and don't rip CD's or games to the HD.

I've got around 6 gb left on my 13 gb drive oh I mean 20gb drive. I installed one game that had disc read errors. It fixed the problem. Otherwise I don't have anything on there besides XBLA games and game saves.

I need to dump all my arcade lives to my computer so I can burn them to a CD since apparently the xbox will run them from there. That oughta free up a good amount of space!

Nah. I didn't think it was useless. 50% of your drive is still 50%. I just wanted to know out of curiosity how much people were using since my friend said I'd never use a lot.

How can you copy XBLA games to computer? I'd love to back them up.

I have this thing called SATA-X or something that connects to my xbox sata port and I plug the drive into it and a usb plug from it to my PC. I can then use it to copy the data over (albeit slowly) over to the PC.

But that's like saying a half full/empty 8oz glass is the same as a half full/empty 55 gal. drum.

50% of a 20gig drive is not a lot, 50% of a 120gig drive is. You could fill a 20gig 100%, and your friend would still be correct relatively speaking, more so since he was speaking of the 120gig drive as his point of reference. :ponder:

Oh yeah, right, duh. I know of that. I was discussing possibly getting it in another thread.

50% of a 20gig drive is still 50%. To some people it may be a lot. To me it's not.

My friend said I'd never come nowhere near to filling a 120GB and I can fill that with mp3's alone if I really wanted. I'm going to fill it with 99% downloaded content and I will too.

50% of 20 gig = 10 gig.

50% of 120 gig = 120 gig..

A BIG difference!!

That means I have, what, around 84% higher chance of filling up mine 20 gig than someone does of filling up their 120gig? Feel free to correct those number, I sucked at statistics. :P
