Atari Light Gun question

Recommended Posts

No, it will not. You pretty much need a standard CRT TV to work with the lightgun.

Thanks, that is what I was afraid of.

Tangential question: did the light gun work okay with early CRT projection systems? I always assumed they would.

What about more modern DLP, LCD projectors (for analog television)?

I guess I could drag my NES or XEGS in to the office and find out. :)

Hi, Mitch do you know why the lightgun does not work on LCD screens?

The problem is that my ATARI 7800 Scart does not work properly on my actual CRT and i am

looking forward to purchase an LCD screen.

You see my problem. :D

It's because the lightgun uses the scanline in the CRT monitor to determine where the gun is pointed at the screen. LCD TVs don't have scanlines.

I wonder if you could rig up a fake scan line...if i recall it detects the change in luminosity as the raster goes past...maybe a bright line pulse on the screen every 1/60 of a second or something would do it. There's likely something wrong with my understanding, but who knows.

Thanks to share your knowledge Mitch, i clearly understand why now.

So it should be the same issue with all LCD screens and all lightguns? Like the one on Super Famicom too.

Damn those manufacturers don't care about retro-compatibility.
