Movies about classic games?

Recommended Posts

I recently saw "The King of Kong" which is about 2 people fighting for best score in Donkey Kong, and I was wondering what some other good movies like this are.

Chasing Ghosts: Beyond The Arcade

Great documentary about the Golden Age of video gaming.

Can be torrented.

I don't remember the name, but I think during the summer, there was like 5 episodes of a video game show that went through the history from the vintage games up through today. It was on G4. They probably replay it once in awhile.

Gotta be "Icons." Was a great show back when G4 was the videogame channel. I think it's been renamed "Gamemakers" and Icons now covers extreme sports stars and movie folks.

The Wizard was an awesome movie! I didn't even know about it until it was played on TV a few years back, man what a cool movie :P

I remember The Wizard. Great movie, made me even more eager to get Super Mario Bros. 3. Unfortunately, it was still being prepared for US release, and I could only play it at a PlayChoice-10 at a local toy store. I remember trying to find it but we kept turning up empty handed, and we ended up getting a raincheck.

Then, on the day before my 10th birthday party, my mom got a call saying my stepfather had picked up the game. My friends were eager to try it too naturally.

At any rate, I once had a dream about a novel based on the Activision title 'Grand Prix.' It looked like the box albeit with minor changes to show it was a novel based on the game. Weird, I know, but I even remember the plot!

I watched this one today, viewed it instantly on Netflix (totally awesome technology). I liked it, but I think that Billy Mitchell is a total lammer, what a chump. The guy doesn't even play a game in the movie, he's in a room with a load of classic games and he doesn't even play, weak. The other dude Steve Wiebe is a total class act.

I donb't remember much about it but i think there was either a sci fi film or tv sci fi series called 'star raiders' (nothing to do with the atari game of the same name)

Also...Last Starfighter, a few references to Atari

There's always:

Joysticks (comedy though)

Cloak and Dagger (not a documentary but you gatta love it)

The Wizard (was allready mentioned)

What about TRON?

I would like to add that there is simply no other movie like King of Kong. It is by far the best video game movie that has ever been made. The bonus features on the DVD are amazing as well.

I've really got to check out chasing ghosts.

Most of the people in the king of kong are in "Chasing Ghosts: Beyond The Arcade", and billy mitchell is just as much of a jackass. He doesn't live to far away from me

I love retro, obviously, but continuing to wear a Members Only jacket into the 21st century is a bit much. I got the feeling he (Billy Mitchell) wasn't just putting on a show for the movie but is actually like that every day. And I really didn't know what to think of Mr. Awesome.

That may be so, but there was some manipulative cutting going on in the editing room as well.

I guess War games to some extent could be classic gaming.

I've seen the King of Kong, and it should be noted that one should go read the Twin Galaxies forum thread about that movie to clear up how the film makers portrayed some things.

True dat, the magic of editing. But there was at least one dude who wanted to blow Billy Mitchell.

I assume you're saying there were politics involved in this... agendas? Conspiracies? Espionage? Okay, maybe just politics. I'm not at all surprised. not saying it wasn't an entertaining movie, and the people were probably portrayed in certain ways in order to be more controversial or titillating.

Politics: I don't know.

Manupalitive entertainment: yes.

Or perhaps that's the same these days.

Anyway, for a better perspective, listen to this interview (and try to ignore the two giggling schoolyard kids interviewing him):
