Just got a Jag. Couple of questions.

Recommended Posts

K, so I just got a Jag, right? Well, the place I got it from said it was untested, and I got it at a total steal (as is, but still). Now, that being said, there are a couple of problems with it, and I want to see if they are common. I've opened the system up and cleaned everything up as well as I could.

1. The audio seems to make a "popping" noise when I'm playing Cybermorph. Is this something to do with the game, or possibly the system itself? I'm using an RF switch from a NES (and it's not the RF, it works like aces with my NES). It does this with two different tvs.

2. The controller seems not to work correctly. The down button on the control pad doesn't seem to do anything. It's supposed to make you climb in Cybermorph, natch, but it does nothing. I've disassembled the controller and gave everything a thorough cleaning, and checked the trace coming from the down key. All seems fine. Again, is this a common problem? If it's the controller, no prob, I'll just grab another one, but if it's the system...

Thanks in advance!

I've never had problems with my contollers, ever, so I'm going to assume that's what the problem is. As for the RF, unfortunately my Jaguar is kept at my parents house for when I visit home. I'm not sure an NES RF would be compatible with it, but if it seems fine otherwise I suppose it's not that. I know you can switch the NES RF to the SNES with no problem, not sure about the Jaguar, but that's only because I don't have the manual to read and the RF to look at.

The Jaguar RF output is notorious for poor quality. I wouldn't be surprised if that's the source of trouble.

A/V composite cables are common and not too expensive, but S-video is much rarely and so more costly.

Yep, sounds like the controller is faulty.

I interchange a Jaguar RF switch and an NES RF switch with my my Jaguar pretty regularly; no issues. Perhaps a composite or s-video cable might yield better results. As for the down button issue, have you checked the controller port or the end of the controller cable for damage or obstructions? Borrow one from someone and test it if you can...

No, got it off a local game store.

I'm gonna get a composite cable and a controller from a website and see if that fixes things. LORDY those S-Video cables ARE expensive!

Dude! Thanks! I've become a big fan of S-Video in recent months. I've been getting those multi-system S-Video cables at GameStop and using them for my SNES, GameCube, and N64. SO much nicer than composite. I'ma snatch one of those aftermarket ones (aftermarket stuff is great, if you ask me). Eventually I hope to get all of my older systems modded for S-Video as well.

Do the 7, 8 and 9 keys on the keypad work ?

If they do, then your console is fine, the controller is to blame.

If they don't, then there's a problem with the signal on pin #13. It can be either a faulty controller (probably a broken wire) or a faulty Jaguar joypad port.

Well, never mind one way or the other. It totally crapped out on me tonight. Just suddenly stopped working for no real reason. Tried a different power supply, and no dice. Must be the power supply in the system itself. Figures. I've wanted a Jag for years and years, and once I get one, it goes straight to shit.

Did you try another Jag power supply? The Jag has a power plug polarity that is opposite many adapters, and is DC. Do it wrong and you'll smoke the system.

So, instead of trying to fix the as-is one, I went ahead and got one off of ebay. I think I got a honey of a deal, too!

System with A/V cables (woot!), one controller, A/C adaptor, and 5 games. Zool 2, Bubsy, Cybermorph, Evolution Dino Dudes, and, the one I wanted, Tempest 2000. How much? 85 bucks priority shipped! No instructions for the games, but meh. Originally, it was supposed to only have 4 games, but the seller found Zool before shipping it and sent it along. Totally AWESOME! Now I just need AvP and I'll be totally set!
