Looks like another Famiclone's surfaced: the Retro Entertainment System

Recommended Posts

Also, take a look at what Yobo did to the FC Game Console(pay close attention around the Power and Reset buttons): http://www.xboygame.com/ebayImage/FC-Console/Yobo-FC.jpg

Looks familiar? I think there's a new version of the system that's made to resemble RetroBit's version. If anyone has it, does it contain the same NOAC as the older FC Game Consoles, or did Yobo use the revised NOAC in the Retro Entertainment System?

Yes my friend got one of those newer Yobo FC systems, and I noticed the buttons are solid plastic instead of transparent like the older ones. It more resembles the RES. As for whether or not it uses the newer NOAC, I can't say as I have no point of reference to compare to. The main difference between the older and newer NOAC from what I've heard is that the audio emulation is better, but like I said, mine has heavily distorted audio. My friend's doesn't, so I'm pretty confident my RES is defective. His Yobo FC had messed up video though, so it seems one or the other has to be defective. :P

I might buy the RES again, this time from SAG, that way at least I have the 30 day return policy to fall back on if something's wrong with it. My first one I got from eBay. I'm hesitant though because after getting a new 72-pin connector, my old NES is working beautifully, so it's almost completely pointless now.

You might as well just keep that NES. It sure doesn't hurt to have the Retro Entertainment System around, especially to keep that NES working.

Oh yes, definitely. There are many advantages to having a real NES as opposed to a fake one. I don't have to worry about sound or compatibility issues, for one. Of course there are the occasional games that despite all the cleaning in the world with alcohol and a q-tip, still take several tries to get working. But in my case that's a one in twenty occurrence, all other times it's working the first try.

So the only purpose of getting another RES would be for that one-in-twenty occurrence.

The sound was fine on the system, as I tested one at the local Play'n'Trade. There were some rather serious graphical issues with Rad Racer II (the store actually had a copy), and tested my copy of Castlevania III. CV3 would not display the opening screen, the whip upgrade icon for the title and Trevor's sprite were garbled, and it went to a black screen after the "prayer" screen. The RetroDuo did (save for its "stereo" audio for the NES side), but I wonder when the NES controller adapters will be released (and will it work for the 4-score?).

Was there a second revision of the RES made?

So, no notes were missing in games with frequent DPCM channel usage? Such as Super Mario 3 and Castlevania?

Speaking of second revisions... Retrobit made this as well didn't they? They made a Retro Duo "v2.0"(the one I had) and it's sound was terrible! Most games sounded like, quite literally, static most of the time! Some games like Bases loaded were so screwed up, that you couldn't hear anything except the bass line!

They very well could have made a new revision and screwed up the sound hardware with this system as well.
