Best games of all time (any system)

You might think it's strange, but my favorite game of all time was M.U.L.E. on the Atari 800. 4 human players, well balanced, bits of humor and a brilliant design, I have yet to find a game to knock it off the top of my list. Ballblazer also makes my list.

Why would that be strange. It's always been in my Top 10 all time best. It's very popular. I think it'd be on a lot of people's Top-whatever list.

Strange in that we have more then 20 years of games created since M.U.L.E. was released, and I haven't found another game that can challenge it.

Well, that is strange that the industry just hasn't come up with all that many absolutely stellar games. Great ones, but cream-of-the-crop amazing... that's pretty rare indeed. I was thinking Spore was going to be one of those stellar games, but for me, it didn't live up to the promise. So... we still have games like M.U.L.E. leading the pack!

Maybe I need to look at doing a Wii version of this game... though that is probably something for a different forum. :)

To say that gameplay hasn't made great leaps since the 2600? That's nostalgia talking. The 2600 was a GREAT system and was the only pre-NES system in my collection to survive the great purge of the winter of 2008, so obviously I like it. But it was limited enough that many if not most game genres aren't really feasible on that platform.

I have a hard time coming up with a top-XX list because there are a lot of games that I really adore for one reason or another, and most of them are computer games, but here is my best attempt. Some games I consider to be great because of their impact at the time of release, even though they may have not aged well or were not as good as subsequent sequels or newer games in the genre. These games are not in any particular order. This is a list of what I think are the 10 greatest games, and not necessarily my 10 favorite.

1. Star Control 2 (PC) - I just can't say enough good things about this game. It's just good on so many levels.

2. Pac-Man

2. Maniac Mansion 2: Day of the Tentacle (PC) - greatest point-and-click adventure ever

3. Super Mario Bros. (NES)

4. X-Wing (the whole series) (PC) - I think this game immersed the player in the world of Star Wars more than any other, and was a great sim for it's time.

5. Final Fantasy VII (PSX)

6. Wolfenstein 3D (PC) - love it or hate it, FPS's are so of the most popular games, and this game basically started it all

7. Sim City (PC)

8. Adventure (the original text adventure game, not the VCS game)

9. Space Invaders (VCS)

10. Tetris

although i love the golden age consoles. In my opinion the SNES game for game had the best most memorable games. i wouldnt even know where to start. but since i love racing games, even today with the new consoles i have not found a game quite as fun as (snes) Top gear. an absolute classic imo

1 Smurfs Rescue 2600

2 Super Mario Bros NES

3 Mortal Kombat 1 SNES

4 Street Fighter 2 SNES

5 Tetris GB

6 BMX Airmaster 2600

7 Goldeneye N64

8 Mario Galaxy Wii

9 Zelda TP Wii

10 Sonic 1 Genesis

Finally, someone else who appreciates the original Sonic more than the sequels. Everyone goes apeshit over Sonic 2. I almost put Sonic on the list but it got edged out. If it had been a top 10 *FAVORITE* games though, it would have been on there for sure.

That was what I meant, surely 'hardcore gamers' play games with depth, eg Civilization, Might and Magic 2, M.U.L.E., Ultima games (not the stupid console ports),Heart of Africa, The Bard's Tale III, Zak McKraken, Wizards Crown, The Castle of Dr Creep, Spelunker, even original platform games like Loderunner or Jumpman, Infocom games. Sort of Sonic and Mario, they are easy playable, for 10 minutes type of games, nothing more. Maybe Digital Press has some weird 'hardcore players' indeed, maybe they haven't heard of these games.

BAH, that is nonsensicle that saying some games are hardcore and some aren't just based on the type of game it is... A game IS A GAME IS A GAME! A game is either REALLY fun or NOT. Genre, game length etc. don't really matter that much. What matters is wether a game makes you feel a certain way, regardless of anything! A special touch you could say. Can't put your finger on it. Why do you think so many people like games that really aren't that good? Mortal Kombat II... sure, it's a decent fighting game, but it's by no means great. Yet people love the atmosphere of the game more than anything I think. Super Mario Bros. 1 is quite a simple game. Nothing really special when you look at it or play it. But there's just SOMETHING about it that is just awesome.

Actually, I think that's it! Not enough is said about a game's atmosphere. I think it plays a huge role in how great a game is, just by having an awesome atmosphere that immerses you deeply into the game. A certain combination of graphics, sounds and gameplay. Only a very small portion of all videogames have the correct formula. People like Miyamoto know the secret formula. I read in an interview of his recently, although it was an OLD interview, that he actually creates games BACKWARDS! He starts at the end and works to the beginning! Pretty crazy, and I wonder if that may be a key secret in why his games are so great.

Also, I must point out that there are LOADS of ties in the list. I'm gonna fix that and it will make the list look somewhat more realistic. :)

Wow... this is hard, to limit it to 20. But here's what I decided on... there's probably another 50 that were in contention, though. Obviously some of these were on several platforms, so I'm listing the version I played most.

1. Super Mario 64 (N64)

2. Space Taxi (C64)

3. Impossible Mission (C64)

4. Ms. Pac-Man (arcade)

5. Dark Cavern (2600)

6. M.U.L.E. (C64)

7. Pitfall II (2600)

8. Leather Goddesses of Phobos (C64)

9. Day of the Tentacle (Mac)

10. Wasteland (PC)

11. Archon (C64)

12. The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time (N64)

13. Toy Bizarre (C64)

14. Starfox 64 (N64)

15. Starflight (PC/Genesis)

16. Qix (5200)

17. Exile (Mac) [The top-down RPG]

18. The Typing of the Dead (DC)

19. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (GC)

20. New Super Mario Bros. (DS)

Systems:

1. Nintendo 64

2. Commodore 64

3. Atari 2600

4. Sega Genesis

5. Nintendo DS

Ys: Book I and II for the Turbo Grafx CD-ROM. I put it at number 1, and it never gets any respect.

You know they are releasing Ys: Book I and II for the DS, right? I think it comes out in like a week or so.

Chris

I heard. I don't have a DS, but that may be a reason to get one.

I may have been born in '88, and yeah there's a lot of "newer" titles here, but I still deeply respect older systems :o

I think the 1990's will never even be CLOSE to being beaten as far as videogames go. So many awesome systems and games came out in the 90's, from 8 bit to 128 bit systems. Just an amazing time in my opinion. The variety was staggering! I'm still to this day trying to catch up on systems and games I missed from the 90's! :D Just got my first 3DO today. I sorely miss those days. Gaming just isn't the same anymore.

I made some effort to rank these, but that's difficult with games of this caliber. I could call more than half of these equal.

With polls like this I think it might be better to score the votes equally. If they are weighted, then the scale should be in a narrow range like from 81-100pts. Point systems using smaller numbers exaggerate the spread too much.

It's easy to come up with a few contenders for best ever:

1) Star Control II (PC)

2) Ultima 7 (PC)

3) Ultima Underworld (PC)

Harder to expand the list without going beyond 20:

4) Legend of Zelda (NES)

5) Adventure (VCS)

6) Goonies II (NES)

7) Super Mario Bros. (NES)

8.) NASCAR Racing (PC) (not gonna trip that stupid emoticon)

9) X-Wing (PC)

10) Age of Kings - aka Age of Empires II (PC)

11) Civilization (PC)

12) Contra (NES)

13) Zelda 3 (SNES)

14) DOOM II (PC only - editing is what made it fun. Could be counted with DOOM 1 but I had II).

15) River City Ransom (NES)

16) Ultima: Exodus (NES)

17) Super Mario Bros 3 (NES)

18) Thunder Force III (Genesis)

19) Wings of Fury (Apple II)

20) Final Fight CD (Sega CD)

------------

21) Ultima 6 (PC) - honorable mention, it almost made the list. The mouse interface on this game sucked.

Systems:

1) NES

2) Atari 2600

3) mid-90's DOS PC (if that counts)

4) Sega Genesis

5) Sega CD (if that counts separate from Genesis)

6) Atari 7800 (bump up if those don't count)
