Recommended Posts

i just played lock n chase for the first time and it is such a pac-man rip-off. it even has the "bonus fruits" at the center of the screen.

Yeah well, not quite, you can put up walls behind yourself to slow down your pursuants, and you know, its more fun than Pac-man, but yeah other than that, its Pac-man. ;) :D

The rip-off sound FX are the worst offence

What did you expect? The original arcade version of Lock'N'Chase was a "Pac-Man ripoff" as were a dozen or so other games. The only thing different about Lock'N'Chase is that there are no "power pill"-type devices for allowing you to chase after the cops (hence you must either avoid them or try to lock them up without locking yourself up), and once you have collected all the dots, you must leave the maze to finish it.

heh yeah you got to realize during it's time, for almost any console or computer there were TONS of pacman clones and ripoffs. ;) Lock N' Chase was yet another one. Of course everyone knew it, it was just the way it was. (think of SF2 and all the fighting game clones.. same thing) ;)

I liked lock n' chase because when I was 10 years old and my sister was 6 she did not realize that during a two player game both controllers were always active. While she was taking her turn, I would "help" her get caught in her own lock traps.

My favorite part of the game is the challenge of trying to trap one of the guards between two doors. Playing it, I found myself becoming more focused on trapping guards than finishing levels. :ponder:

It is a pretty shameless rip-off otherwise. Still, it is pretty fun to play once in a while. Of course, I liked Alien, which was another Pac-Man clone... :)

Lock 'n' Chase is probably my favorite Pac-Man ripoff, and is still better than Pac-Man itself on the 2600... Alien is good too, but LnC is still the best.

One of the problems with the 2600 version is that the graphics sort of destroy the storyline of the game. If you play the arcade version or even the Gameboy version, you at least can tell that you're a theif, and that you're evading guards... without that, it's a lot more obvious that it's a Pac-Man ripoff... oh well.

yeah, i shouldn't be too hard on lock n' chase. once the succesful pac-man game was out. everyone followed.

of course lots of games are similar. defender is a horizontal scrolling game and on atari you have chopper command etc.

and there are gazillons of vertical shooting games with aliens coming down at you, based on space invaders. megamania, phoenix, etc etc
