Mirage #1 Posted February 19, 2009 (edited) Sorry if this has been done... I didn't see anything. If there is one, please direct me to it. I've seen a few photos scattered here and there of people with their computers or consoles way back when, but it would be nice to have a consolidated thread of them. Here are scans of my Vic-20 (photo July 1984) and later C64 (photo Feb 1986) systems in the '80s. Some interesting things I see looking at them. When I had the Vic-20, I really liked the amber monitored terminals, so I put an amber plexi over my B&W TV It didn't work very well, but I was like 8 years old, so whatever. I wish I still had that desk... both of them, actually. They were both great for the old computers. Anyone have more to share? Mirage #8 Posted February 24, 2009 Probably just no one has any photos, or doesn't know where they are. I just found the two in the first post about a year ago. They had been lost for 2 decades! Hopefully more people will dig out more over time.
Tempest #9 Posted February 24, 2009 My first computer setup was an Atari 400 with a 410 tape drive on a rolling cart. We used to roll it out and plug it into the TV when I needed to use it, then roll it back into the closet. I still have everything including the cart, so I could always hook it up again and take a picture. My second computer setup was an Apple IIe on a dining room table. Nothing too fancy or interesting. I still have everything setup in my computer room. Tempest
BydoEmpire #10 Posted February 24, 2009 (edited) The only pic I can think of is me sitting on the couch reading an EGM from '90 or so - but that's hardly "back in the day." I wish I had some old photos, though I do still have the printouts of some Applesoft BASIC games I wrote in junior high. pinball22 #11 Posted February 25, 2009 I just don't have that many pics of stuff from when I was younger in general... my parents had been really into photography before I was born, but they were kind of tired of it by the time I came along and never took all that many pictures. monzamess #12 Posted February 25, 2009 Ok I just got lucky on this one. I scanned in all the old family photos I could get over the course of a couple of years, and they're all online. I really don't have many pics of my games/computers/etc from "back in the day" either, except the two I posted above.
telengard #13 Posted February 26, 2009 Is it weird that I enjoy these threads so much? I wish I had some pics of my rigs from back in the 80s. Thanks for sharing! ~telengard
monzamess #14 Posted February 26, 2009 (edited) I found some more. In order: * My Amiga/Atari ST setup, probably being moved or something; it wasn't normally this messy -- around 1990 -- after I mostly lost interest in the ST as you can guess from the pic -- PCjr stuff in the closet * Amiga/ST again-- I used an Atari CX22 trackball as my ST mouse because the real mouse died -- about 1989 * Atari 2600 and Odyssey2 under the fish tank w/old B&W TV -- late 80s * old microwave cart used as printer stand and eventually as a computer desk, with my old-timey cable box. I still have that plant! Holy crap it's 20 years old! (it just regenerates) Cat died 16 years ago unfortunately. -- maybe 1989 * Pitfall high score (hard to see) -- about 1982 * bunny playing Atari 2600 on a B&W TV -- 1984 Edited February 26, 2009 by monzamess

BydoEmpire #16 Posted February 27, 2009 Those are great! I'd be nervous about having my console & tv right under the fishtank, though! Fun thread.
RJ #17 Posted February 27, 2009 (edited) What the HELL is that on the wall in the 1st pic- a ROTARY DIAL phone? Yeah, TV screen pics were hard to take back then. Couldnt exaclty try over & over to get it right- film cost money back then! I finally got a Seaquest pic to work & they sent back the wrong patch- it was the Laser Blast 1,000,000 patch which I didnt want & lost track of (may be at my folks' place) & I like in the "bunny" pic the VCS carts piled on the desk's back corner. I'm headed to my parents' tomorrow AM, I'll see if I can dig up any pics (& that patch!) I know there's one where you can see under the TV, there's a plastic shoebox-size case w/ 5-6 VCS cart boxes, I used to store the carts in the boxes. monzamess #18 Posted February 27, 2009 (edited) Yeah, rotary phone. Here's the last of my pics, anything newer than these isn't really in the spirit of "back in the day." First pic is a piece of furniture I made. The white shelves slide out. This was sitting where my old desk with the Amiga and ST was sitting. Those computers were gone, and I had a PC clone (sitting in the back). (pics from 1993) It's holding: 19" TV and VCR, stereo receiver Top white shelf: portable CD player, TurboDuo 2nd shelf: Genesis I, SMS II 3rd shelf: Jaguar, 7800 4th shelf: SNES, NES Side view: pockets for carts Closer view of my simple 2600 cart holder: The shelf-thingy a few years later in 1996: Commodore 1702 monitor, same VCR Sega Saturn same receiver, new CD changer three daisy-chained composite switches, Panasonic 3D0, Top white shelf: NES top-loader, TG-16 (the Duo died) 2nd shelf: Genesis I & 32X, SNES 3rd shelf: SMS original, Jaguar 4th shelf: XEGS, 7800 w/composite mod I still have the stereo and VCR. All the systems and even the monitor were sacrificed to eBay by 2002. The shelf-thingy is in my shed holding tools & stuff--can't get rid of it even if the wife doesn't want it in the house.
