+DarkLord #8 Posted August 12, 2010 I have a lantronix MSS100 I use with my a8, can someone tell me how to set it up to use with a 1040 STe? Same general concept. You're using it to connect between your serial port and your LAN. You can then telnet in or out, with the appropriate software.

Well I'm brand new at ST, so I guess I need to figure out the correct connection to the serial port, is it a direct connection? or does it need a null modem cable? Also what is a good, easy to use software programe for connection to a BBS?
madmax2069 #10 Posted August 12, 2010 I got to find the power supply for my Wyse winterm 3360se and see if it has the Terminal Emulation Client installed to see if i can connect.

Also what is a good, easy to use software programe for connection to a BBS? Its a normal serial port cable that goes from the Lantronix to the serial port on the ST. You'll have to match up the ends, but its industry standard stuff. Your LAN cable plugs into the Lantronix. No null-modem cable needed. I've only used the Lantronix to *receive" calls with my BBS. I had to make several changes in the Lantronix settings to do this. I'm not sure about what, if any, changes you would need to do just to dial out. Speed will of course, have to be the same for both the ST and the Lantronix - prob. duplex settings, stuff like that. There are a couple of Telnet programs for the ST. I think you should also be able to use any good Telecomms program that lets you get to a screen where you can actually type the commands in, directly to your device. HTHs. PS Think I found one - try "TAZ". taz_100.zip

However, I can tell you that there is -no- null adaptor or null cable on my Mega ST4, hooked up directly to the Lantronix UDS1100.

+doctorclu #19 Posted August 15, 2010 BBS is not responding when I connect and hit enter. Check and see if the BBS is hanging. Is tehre any reason why these ST BBS Express boards cannot be more responsive on connection (rather than requiring the enter key to be hit, or to give notice the enter needs to be hit?) The Lantronix should be able to do that Doc, but I've not found it in the manual (yet). I'll have to dig that out and give it another try. It surely would be more user friendly. I was just so happy when I got mine working at all, I didn't want to touch anything else.

It surely would be more user friendly. I was just so happy when I got mine working at all, I didn't want to touch anything else. It is strange, the 8-bit Atari BBS's come right up with a prompt. The Grove (another ST BBs) I think is run under emulation. So the actual hardware Atari ST BBS's are requiring a carriage return before anything happens. I advertised this BBS on a BBS promotion group, the immediate response was "There is nothing to do when I get there" I thought the guy was just being negative so I stated that and how I thought such negative comments were not helping BBS promotion to which he banned me from his site. Looking back, he probably got to the BBS and got a blank screen (for reasons mentioned above.) Of course naturally the guy was not worth associating with in the end, but I think some confusion could have been avoided if the BBS came right up to a prompt. Or if the guy (who is supposedly a BBS guru) tried hitting the enter key for a response when nothing happened. Oh well. Anyway, hope that can be ironed out. +orpheuswaking #23 Posted August 17, 2010 okay so tonight I realized I have no idea how to use ST terminal software. on the a8 I just pull up IceT and enter the terminal from the menu and the lantronix comes up with LOCAL~> and I can telnet from there, so can someone with a lot of patience walk me through using TAZ to be able to dial into the BBS (would also like to be able to telnet into IRC)

Honestly though, if you can get the term program talking to the Lantronix (making sure all the baud is the same and so forth) you can work the Lantronix from the ST like you do the Atari 8. As for the telnet into IRC... there is a list I have up on a BBS that links to all the Atari BBS's (except the ST Guild at the moment) telnet://rdfig.net (Prison Board BBS) Log in hit return till you get to the main menu X for internet A for Atari Select the Atari IRC option.
