games that use special control scheme

Recommended Posts

Is there a list out there of all the games that use special controllers like booster grip, keypad, etc. Which games use which controllers. Also a list of one player games that use two joysticks like berzerk.

Berzerk is only one Joystick...

Here's some info...

BOTH JOYSTICKS-

Radar Lock

Raiders of the lost Ark

Riddle of the Spinx

Spy Hunter

Stargate

RIGHT PORT-

Basketball

Gamma Attack

Star Ship

Tac-Scan

Wizard of Wor

PADDLE+JOYSTICK-

GI Joe

Sweat

JOYSTICK OR PADDLE-

Astroblast

DRIVING CONTROLER-

Indy 500

XE Lightgun-

Sentinel

VIDEO TOUCH PAD+JOYSTICK-

Star Raiders

JOYBOARD-

Mogul Maniac

BOOSTER GRIP-

Foot Craz Pad-

I don't feel like typing the paddle games up so here's a screen.

Berzerk has the glitch of "dropping a landmine" by moving up and down at the same time and pressing the button. Such an action could be done by using 2 sticks on a wye cable, I suppose. But yeah, it's left stick only.

You can find most of games' info in Keven Horton's "sizes.txt" file (tho it was never completed).

dropping a landmind? I have never heard of this. Is it just a dot that appears like a shot but just stays in one place?

Towering Inferno is missing from that right-joystick list.

You sure?

It seems to be Left Joystick to me.... :ponder:

I made a list of games that were meant to be used with controllers other than a standard joystick. If anyone knows of what is missing, I'd like to know!

Nice list.

I notice you list the "Coleco Kid Vid "Controller""....Those are Joystick games, there is no "Controller". That's like calling the "Supercharger" a "Controller" IMHO. ;)

Oh yeah, I forgot the "Track & Field Controller" on my list.

Towering Inferno uses the right stick for single-player games. This was done (I think) because the default score is right-justified...it saves a step when checking the option. I did a Supercharger hack that swaps them.

Yes, the Kid Vid is more a controlled than a controller.

Well I questioned it because looking at the box, cart and manual scans, none of them mention the right joystick and when I load it in Stella it seems to work with the left stick.....

But I don't have the real game so I'll have to take your word for how it works on the real 2600. :)

That's because this ROM is recognized in Stella to use the right port, and has its properties such that the virtual ports are 'swapped'. It really does use the right joystick port. You can go into the ROM properties to see that, and note that when turning off the virtual port swap, the left joystick no longer works.

I think I meant robotron instead of berzerk.

There is no 2600 Robotron.

Defender II or Raiders of the Lost Ark, maybe? Those use both sticks.

If you check game properties in Stella, you will notice that common games with the reversed arrangement (TI, RotLA, WoW, etc) have them swapped in their profile entries (so P0 = right and P1 = left). This saves you the trouble of swapping them yourself.

Yep, Towering Inferno uses the right port. That caused me no end of frustration to figure out as the instruction manual said nothing about that.

Stone Age is another game that uses reversed ports.

True, but it's referred to as such in the AA database (and elsewhere), so I'm sure that's why he used that terminology.
