HD-DVD Player

I would consider over 1000$ to be expensive (though my grandparents paid nearly $1500 for their set, but then, their retired so :P ) Oh, I forgot to say, I could see the difference, on my Asus (7" screen at 800x480) but then again, it's a computer screen, it doesn't perform any of the antialising smoothing or any of that bullshit that the average TV does (intentionally or not)

And to hyper-eye, what I call Pissing away money, is most likely the same as anyone else would call it.....Its not an offence to you, heck, that should have been a compliment. In my case, it's the roof or the (how the hell much does an 80" TV/projector cost anyways)TV, not both. Id love to have the money to get both, but it won't happen, not only through cost, but through real estate. I have an apartment, there's not a spot big enough for that size of set, though I used to use a projector, way back when, but that doesn't count as it was only a 640x480 but evne there, unless there's something you can do to change the focal point, the biggest I coud get an image would be around 52 or so. But a HDCP projector that does full 1080P would still cost up there with big TV's

Like I said, if you got the money, that's fine, but don't belittle everybody else just cause they wont get, (or cant) the rEqUiReD equipment to preform a spacific task that honestly isnt that important.

"Pissing Away" refers to irresponsibility and wastefulness. Don't pretend that isn't exactly what you meant. Reading the original statement it is perfectly clear what you were saying. BTW, I didn't spend anymore on my PJ than your grandparents spent on their television. But my PJ will put off a good picture at up to 120" diagonal. If you know what your doing and look in the right places you can get a great display for a great price. It doesn't have to be as expensive as you make it out to be. But I guess it just isn't all that important... to people who post in the modern gaming section of the forum which generally refers to consoles with high definition output. Oh wait... these are exactly the sort of people that would consider it important.

I paid like $799 for my projector and while it's not 1080p, it does have a built in DVD player and speakers (yep all you need is an outlet and you have an instant theater) and throws up an image from as little away as 4 feet! (I have mine set about 16 feet back and measured horizontal not diagonal is 10 feet across!!) At the time they also threw in a free 92" screen and a portable sub woofer along with a one year extended warranty on everything. I love the thing so much I still get excited thinking about watching stuff on it and I bought it like 2 years ago. If that's pissing away $$, I sure do like pissing!!

I own both a PS3 and HD-DVD add-on. I have both a 26" CRT HD-TV and a 47" LCD HD-TV. On both TV's, I notice the difference between Blu-ray/HD-DVD and a regular DVD as the picture is crisper, clearer, and the colors brighter on Blu-ray/HD-DVD.

Of course, this difference depends on the movie also: on Dark Knight or Harry Potter or Indiana Jones the difference isn't as readily noticeable. But on releases such as Planet Earth or Star Trek: The Original TV Series the difference between regular DVD and Blu-ray/HD-DVD is incredible.

I enjoy both Blu-ray and HD-DVD. BUT..... I still buy the vast majority of my movie purchases on regular DVD because clearly seeing Al Pacino's nose hair wafting in the breeze in Rightous Kill isn't worth the additional $15 cost of the movie on Blu-ray versus regular DVD.

How dark does a room have to be for a projector? Can you guys have windows open or lights on and and still have a good picture?

I still buy many movies on regular DVD as well, especially if the kids are going to watch it. I have noticed that some Blue Ray movies will come with a DVD copy (not the digital copy garbage) included.

No matter what pj you get it will look better with the lights off. Light is going to reduce the contrast ratio and ruin the black level. But, if you get high enough lumens you will be able to use your pj with lights on or with daylight. I wouldn't play a game like F.E.A.R. or Condemned that way but you could certainly play any decently bright game that way and watch television that way. A lot of pj's have different power levels. I keep mine on low power because I keep the room my pj is in pitch black and it is very bright even at the low power level and I get max black levels out of it. Using low power also extends the life of the quite expensive lamp. It is definitely better to have a fairly dark room if you can't have one completely dark. But a bright enough pj will work with lights.
