Bowser N64 #26 Posted March 4, 2009 (edited) It was $11.41, to be exact. That includes shipping. And, I have the gameshark utility program, the one from goldeneye forever.. What I need to know NOW, is whether or not I can access the gameshark through serial only, and not have to have it power on normally with my N64. Because it won't count down the numbers like it is supposed to. I changed the keycodes, and it is locked to the wrong game. Can I fix this with my new cable and the software? nathanallan #27 Posted March 4, 2009 I would like to clarify before continuing. It's not serial it's parallel. If your new-ish computer has a serial port it looks like a very short parallel port (what you have that you are using) with nine pins, not 25. The utility ought to be able to find the device then read and write to it. I am not sure if it needs to be powered on or not, most likely yes. It may be port-powered, there is a small amount of power supplied by the parallel port (ppt, it's easier to type). I am sure others have had the exact same problem you are having, so again google is your friend, it can be found this way, most likely solved by another person. Bowser N64 #28 Posted March 4, 2009 Right I checked google and all I get is forums that direct me to places that I have no clue where to evwen START to find the answers to my questions. It's all so frustrating.
nathanallan #29 Posted March 4, 2009 which gameshark are you using? what game do you want codes for? on the utility, are there any help sections? this is to start, and from researching a LOT in my lifetime, those are good places to start.
Bowser N64 #30 Posted March 4, 2009 I am using Gameshark Pro 3.3 And I want codes for Goldeneye 007, but I also want to use codes for every game you know... Yes there is a help section but it seems to be empty. Go figure. I click a topic and it's blank window.
+remowilliams #31 Posted March 4, 2009 The utility ought to be able to find the device then read and write to it. Don't the GS's use a specialized ISA parallel 'comms card' or something? Or is that only the Sat/PS1 versions?
Bowser N64 #32 Posted March 4, 2009 Are you saying I have to buy something ELSE now? Oh geez.... *Facepalms*
Rybags #33 Posted March 4, 2009 I should have mentioned before... You could have just made up your own cable with press-on type connectors and ribbon cable. It probably wouldn't be sufficient for many modern high-speed applications like scanners and laser printers, but would likely be just fine for something like your GS. Bowser N64 #34 Posted March 4, 2009 (edited) ....... I should have screwed the gameshark idea, and just bought a usb n64 controller thing. Then I could play it through my Pc. GRRR! Edited March 4, 2009 by Bowser N64
nathanallan #35 Posted March 4, 2009 Research your particular gameshark, see if it takes any more hardware to make it work.
PsychedelicShaman #36 Posted March 4, 2009 ....... I should have screwed the gameshark idea, and just bought a usb n64 controller thing. Then I could play it through my Pc. GRRR! You're very close bowser. Check here: http://www.goldeneyeforever.com/gameshark_pc_tutorial.php. I'm pretty sure you only need a standard parallel port on your pc. Also, I believe only certain n64 controllers work with the usb adapters. I found a chart a while back, but I think the original colored controllers work best (standard grey, blue, etc.). The best adapter is the http://www.adaptoid.com/. They can be expensive via ebay since they aren't always available from the company.
Ian Primus #37 Posted March 4, 2009 (edited) I'm really suprised you weren't able to find a parallel cable in a computer store. They used to be so incredibly common. Target and Wal-Mart used to sell them. Sometimes called "parallel extension cables". You know, this is a lot of work to go through just to cheat at video games on your N64... with all the time you spent researching, you could have just beaten the game yourself.. :D :D -Ian Edited March 4, 2009 by Ian Primus
Bowser N64 #38 Posted March 4, 2009 (edited) Yeah, I realized that just last night. I got what I need, but my gameshark is not running the menu. From what I heard it has to run to the gameshark menu to be able to communicate with the PC through parallel. OMG I hope I did not waste $11.41, because if that's true..... Bowser N64 #39 Posted March 6, 2009 I'm going to be soooo angry if it does not work.
Bowser N64 #40 Posted March 7, 2009 It should be here soon.
Bowser N64 #41 Posted March 7, 2009 Well, it's here. I go to pick it up at the post office.
Bowser N64 #42 Posted March 8, 2009 (edited) Well I plugged in my gameshark to my PC with my new parallel cable, and I have it inserted into my n64 with Goldeneye on top. It is not being detected. I think it is because my gameshark is locked on a keycode and cannot access the menu. Does it ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO be accessing the menu to communicate with the Pc? and how do I know if I have the need serial drivers, and if I even DOING it correctly to begin with? I am using the Gameshark program provided on the goldeneye website. Also, any idea whereI can get some good deals on a new or used Gameshark Pro 3.3? Bowser N64 #43 Posted March 9, 2009 Any ideas?
nathanallan #44 Posted March 9, 2009 The program for the gameshark is not seeing the device on the printer port? Windows won't detect the parallel port automatically, iirc. Which model of gameshark do you have? There has to be a FAQ on it somewhere. is it the Pro 3.3?
Bowser N64 #45 Posted March 9, 2009 Yes it's the Pro 3.
nathanallan #46 Posted March 9, 2009 Bowser, what did you do HERE to fix the problem then? Can the same thing be done to fix it now? I feel like I'm being forced to dig up my gameshark and see what I can do though it would have to wait till tomorrow.
Bowser N64 #47 Posted March 10, 2009 I don't mean to force you to do anything, and yes I have tried that on that page. There was a guy on the Goldeneye forums that helped me out. He told me I have to go get a certain game to unlock the key codes. I think I'll get Cruisin' World.
Rybags #48 Posted March 10, 2009 With some of these older parallel gizmos, you might have to change the port mode in the PCs BIOS settings. Try plain EPP or ECP then work your way up.
