I agree, colecovision is a nice system with fun arcade games. I would also recommend the original NES (or toploader version). I have a retroduo that plays NES and SNES games and I like it (so long as you replace the controllers with original SNES controllers...they fit). I have both systems but I'd rather not put the wear and tear on them.

Well, that's a question that could get 100 different responses from 100 different people! Of course, it's all up to personal preference. There's quite a few on your list that I would consider to be unnecessary, but that's just me. Personally, I think the following are "worth getting":

NES

SNES

Sega Genesis

Sega Dreamcast (for the really good titles unique to that system, also it's cool for occasional emulation stuff, but if these don't appeal to you, skip it)

Atari 7800

Atari 5200 - skip this if you don't care about the trak-ball controller, Space Dungeon, Robotron 2084 or some of the homebrews, since you already have an XEGS

Amiga 500

C64 - since you have an XEGS, you could probably do without this, unless it really appeals to you

I like the Intellivision and ColecoVision and have both, but I think both are skippable unless some of the specific games on those really appeals to you.

Pretty much an impossible question for anyone to really answer for you. What appeals to you, how do you use your systems, etc...

Thanks folks!

I'm in the UK so we call the Sega Genesis Megadrive over here & Mega CD is equivalent to your Sega CD.

Had both intellivision & Colecovision but to be honest can't get on with the controllers.

Atari 5200 was unreleased in the PAL territories so means no end of problems and expense.

Have bought 3 NES consoles in the last 3 years & all have been broken and I dumped the carts off to the charity shop. The top loader was never released in the UK(see 5200).

The NES is possibly the easiest console to fix. Lemme guess. It wouldn't read games. It would only flash white on the screen and the red led would blink.

Yeah... I knew that... :dunce:

I suppose it just wasn't at the top of my consciousness... I looked through the list specifically looking for Genesis. :)

Is the FC Twin available in the UK? That's a top loading NES that's mostly compatible and also has a slot for SNES games.

Yeah, same here... I didn't really look closely at what he did have, only at what I would say to get that wasn't on the list. So yeah, obviously scratch Genesis and 5200 then. I also didn't even notice you're in England until now. That would explain the Sinclairs, Orics, Dragon and Philips. -10 points for my reading comprehension this morning.

You're missing an entire generation in there. The Master System's an easier pick up in Europe than the NES, but you'd be better off with the Game Gear - more sprites, more colors, and the potential for backwards compatibility. The catch is that most of it's library are downgraded Megadrive games, or available on the Gamecube/GBA. The screen is blurred to the point where it could pass for an anti-drug warning. Batteries last for a few hours, and you need 6 of them.

So unless you're serious about collecting, feel free to skip it.

Instead, pick up a Super Nintendo, and a device called the Super 8. You'll have a huge 16 bit library, and access to every 8 bit Nintendo game, while skipping the dead grey toasters entirely...

If that's too expensive of an option, look for pirated PAL compatible NES clones. It'll take some research, as many of the modern ones are flawed...

The third alternative is to buy a Wii. This will also give you access to the Turbografx, NEO GEO, and C64 libraries...

You also need a PS2.

your are missing the SNES which is a nice compliment to the Genesis/Megadrive.

The n64 is a lot of fun and IMO more fun to collect for than the PS1, also it uses cartridges.

The PS2 has more fun games than the Gamecube, way more.

Those three should keep you busy!!! Have fun.

ASprite didn't mention the following info concerning the vc with C64

1.) Not a lot of it's Library will be on the vc.

2.) Some game companies like EA are not supporting the vc. That means you would be missing games on different systems including the C64.

3.) The only C64 software developers that have games on the vc are Hewson, First Star Software, EPYX, System 3, and Apex Computer Productions.

For a c64 stand point, you might be better of getting a c64 if you are after games that are not by the companies I mentioned.

Super Nintendo

Playstation 2

Wii

Sega Master System

I recommend you get different SNK collections to get a good amount of Neo Geo games.

Right Now, the Neo Geo on the vc is a rip off based on what is available on the vc. All the games are on different Collections that are currently available on the vc.

I recommend these following collections as a result if you want to play Neo Geo games:

SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1

  • The King of Fighters Collection: The Orochi Saga for the Wii
  • Metal Slug Collection
  • Fatal Fury: Battle Archives Vol. 1
  • Fatal Fury: Battle Archives Vol. 2
  • Art of Fighting Anthology

All the games I mentioned are fond on the Ps 2 or the Nintendo Wii.

I didn't mention Neo Geo as a system worth getting because of the cost the games. I don't know how tight money is for you.

Games on the Neo Geo can cost over $100.00 based on the currency the United States. There are even some Neo Geo games that cost over $500.00. That system is not made for everyone to get as a result.

Sega Master System is a must, very fun console and lots of games are available for it.

Mattel Hyperscan. Why? I'm helping out on homebrewing stuff on it, so there is hope for it. As it is, there's no real reason other than it's future potential.

I suggest getting a second Mega Drive and a Link cable for port 2, and two copies of Zero Tolerance for head to head play, but you also need two TV sets.

My $0.02USD:)
