I really want a NeoGeo but I only have $60 to spend

Recommended Posts

Neo Geo AES or CD? Because $150 for an AES already seems like a good price to me. $60 is impossibly low unless someone really like you or is in a very generous mood!

Either would be fine. I prefer the AES but I hear the games could run even more than the console. I mean incomplete would be great. I have no problem getting controllers and cables but the console itself is elusive.

Go on eBay and get SNK Arcade Classics for the PS2 BRAND NEW for like $10-15 shipped. :D It has like 10-15 good Neo Geo games on it.

Then I'm sorry, you need to save your money up until you can afford it. No one would part with a neo geo for $60.

Yes I've seen most of them go on EBAY for over $300, usually $400 with a few games!!! Oh and yes the games can cost as much as the system for some of them! You can buy an an adapter to play MVS carts on your AES and then the games don't cost so much. But even the simple adapter costs a crap load! Neo Geo isn't for the casual collector, you better be hardcore Neo Geo/SNK fan and expect to pay to play. I stay away from that, I don't want it that bad so I'll save it for someone who does!

I'd like to buy an SNK AES system too but noticed how expensive they are :( I'd love to get one just to play World Heroes,Bust-a-Move and Samurai Showdown 2.

Over 100 dollars sounds really steep to me,but I do know that's an awesome system. Played it at the arcades all the time.

Is the Neo Geo cd just as good?

NO, the CD system isn't as good. Slow loading, same games. Best way to do it is a MVS board, and a cheap jamma cabinet someone doesn't want.... you may be able to do that for $100 - $150.

Get an MVS. Keep an eye on craigslist, you can get a deal. I got an original Neo Geo MVS 4-slot for $400 with 9 games, and the games were worth close to $300 or so by themselves. The games you want are pretty cheap (World Heroes - $10, Sam Sho 2 - $15-20, Bust-a-move $40). Neo Geo MVS is totally worth it. It's an arcade machine but it's also a game console.

A neo geo controller alone is about $60, but as with most neo geo hardware, it's worth it. Probably the best piece of hardware I've ever touched, not just because of its technological superiority, but also because its unobtainability provides a bit of a psychological rush.

but hell, you could get a neo geo pocket, or pocket color for that money. They're not great, but have the best directional control system of any handheld I've seen. Or $60 gets a lot of game time in an arcade--or used to anyway. The only other thing I could think of is that I've heard rumors of AES hardware not holding its value in japan--but I don't really believe those stories.

Here's a deal for you. Go to your local game store, and buy copies of King of Fighters: Orochi Collection and SNK Arcade Collection for Wii. Bam, you've got yourself over a dozen Neo-Geo games, and it cost you forty dollars. Don't buy the actual system... it's insanely overpriced and buying games for it will only add to that cost. Trust me, I made that mistake in the past, and didn't like the results.

Unless they were immensely stupid and/or desperate. It's not worth buying a Neo-Geo, man. They're overpriced, flimsy systems, and if you want a good picture from your console, you'll have to mod it. You could probably find a Neo-Geo CD for a reasonable price, but the load time really kills the fun of that system.

I can't find one for less than $150. Can somebody who has one make me a deal?

Get yourself a one year subscription to Gametap for $60. They have nearly every Neo Geo game on it.

If you're a real console collector who did his homework, then thinking you could find a Neo Geo console for $60 is pretty foolish.

No matter how generous I felt, I nor anybody that owns a working AES would part with it for $60....That would be insane. Either save up to buy one or go the cheap way and just buy the collection/games put out on PS2,Saturn,XBox or whatever...

This is the cheapest way to go if you want the HOME AES experience...sorta

You can get a AES system, also get a phantom covertor to play MVS carts and a MVS multicart and play your heart out on about 40 games for $400-$500

This is a pic of my Pantom MVS to AES

Then you can do what I did here to make my MVS games look like AES games

gallery_6530_258_1096618.jpg

This is a REAl AES game, not too different from my MVS counterparts

The Custom MVS boxes are alittle bigger but I like it much better than the cardboard they come in

What's with all the hate for the Neo Geo CD? Yes, some games have relatively long load times, but do you mean to tell me that those who are complaining never sat and waited on disk-based games to load up back in the days of the C64, etc?

The load times aren't that bad. There are a few exceptions, but when I play Metal Slug 2, I don't exactly have time to get up and make myself a sandwich. Of COURSE the AES is faster being that it's cartridge-based, but if all you're concerned with is playing SNK games on original hardware, it's tough to beat the Neo Geo CD when you're first getting into them.

I had heard that it had "terrible" loading times, so I went into it keeping it in mind. Maybe it's worse when you aren't expecting it or when you're trying to do a direct comparison between the CD and AES versions, but I found all of the games quite playable (even the ones with longer loading times)

My vote is for the Neo Geo CD. It's cheap when compared to the AES and compact when you're choosing between a hulking Neo Geo arcade cabinet and something you can plunk down in front of the TV. (And I'm not a big fan of tearing apart an MVS to make a hack-tastic console)
