Donkey Kong was ported to a lot of systems over the years. I find it's a good touchstone for many systems. For example, the Colecovision version is the most user-friendly, the Atari 8-bit version is the most complete, the NES version looks and sounds most like the original, etc.

But, overall, which was the best version of Donkey Kong?

I'd like to hear why you made your choice, if you'd care to share. :)

Chose the Atari 8bit computer version. I've just always loved the cement factory level. :)

Plus the A8 version moves very fast and I like that.

I actually voted for the TI99/4A (other)

The graphics are fairly close and it also has all four levels :). From what I remember, the gameplay is very close as well.

I'm surprised the NES version is getting all the votes with its missing screen. Graphically it may be closer to the arcade than the others, but with that missing screen it's only 3/4ths of the game.

The 8-bit version gets my vote because it plays the best, but the TI-99 version is really nice as well. I was really surprised at how good it was because it never gets any mention.

I voted for other. I like the Coleco ADAM Donkey Kong the most. All 4 screens + intermissions. It also has the best music and sound effects.

CoCO3:

The CoCo version shouldn't count for two reasons: 1. It came out many many years after the coco was discontinued (ie. a few years ago) and 2. It is emulated at least partially, which means unlike the other versions it literally is the arcade version.

The 8bit Atari version get's my vote. It is excellent and one of my fav 8bit games.

I voted NES. Sorry haters.

The missing screen never bothered me, but it's funny to me how big a deal it is for some. Aside from that, it's simply the best home conversion I've played. Colecovision's overrated, Intellivision's garbage, Atari 2600's barely a game (though I do like it, go figure), Apple II looks like mush. When I play the Commodore, Atari 800, and Atari 7800 versions, maybe I'll vote for them. But for now, NES.

I voted for the NES version due to the fact i never played any of the computer ports of it and i would put the 7800 version second even with its terrible sound.

The 2600 version however remains a personal favorite of mine having played it as a kid and even from playing it now. :)

Why are ZX and C64 and not Amstrad CPC? Anyway, I voted other.

CPC version has all 4 levels and with overscan, has vertical aspect ratio like in the arcade version.

i like the NES, i just do not put it at the top of the console pantheon

there are far too many nintendo fans that pretend video games were invented in 1985, pretend the sega genesis wasnt the number one console in sales in 1991, 1992 and 1993, or pretend half-assed arcade ports deserve praise for doing things half-right

What do they have to do with "Best home version of Donkey Kong?" :?

And anyway, who cares? Life's too short for fanboys.

Objectively, I stand by my vote for NES as the best home version of Donkey Kong that I've played. I can't speak for the ones I haven't. Despite the missing screen, it's the closest thing to the actual arcade game, of the versions I've played.

it has little to do with home ports of DK, but it does explain away the "hater" tag

Shouldn't be much of a surprise, after all, how many systems did have all four screens? Othere than computer, I can't really think of any that didn't come out years later, or were literal translations of the arcade.

I voted CV by the way, it had great controll, and really impressive graphics and sound too.

Anyone who voted for the NES version needs to have their head checked.

Missing pie level.

Hammer is in the wrong place on the girder level.

No blue barrels on girder level.

Some of the pick up items (purse, umbrella, hat) are missing or in the wrong place on diff levels.

Never more than 1 spring on the elevator level.

The list goes on..

I recently acquired to AtariSoft version of the game for the Commodore 64, and it is fantastic. It has all 4 screens, good controls, and high quality graphics. My second favorite version is the Atari 8-Bit version, which I've only played as a 5200 conversion.

I've only ever played the NES version of Donkey Kong, but the fact that it lacks the Pie Factory board is reason enough for my vote to go to the Atari 8-Bit version.

I have seen the Coleco version in action, and sadly, it lacks the great sounds from the arcade. It looks fantastic though.
