Why is Star Ship (2603) Harder to Find?

Recommended Posts

Just looking over my shelf of boxed games tonight and put them in model number order--this is a collection that I have just acquired without really trying--and noticed that CX-2603 Star Ship is the first one missing. So I checked on eBay for the heck of it, and this seems to be a reasonably hard to find box/cart. Why is this so--was Atari worried that it would not sell as well as Air-Sea Battle or Space War, Outlaw or Slot Racers (I have all of these) so they produced fewer of them?

Just for info purposes, the other early games I am missing are:

Canyon Bomber (2607)

Super Breakout (2608)

Warlords (2620) but I think I sold this one awhile ago, so it should not count as really missing...

Just kind of interesting to see what didn't just pop up in my casual collection. Maybe just to me.

The Starship I picked up on ebay last year is a red label CX-2603. Paid $5.95 for it. It's in great shape except the end lable is missing.:/ One of my favorite games BTW. :)

Atari stopped producing Star Ship and Miniature Golf in 1979 (although Star Ship may have been distributed in 1981 as well). My best guess is that they didn't sell well so they stopped making them.

I do recall my parents buying me Star Ship back in 1981. (Boy, was I disappointed!)

Thanks, Tempest! That's along the lines of what I was thinking. I think Star Ship is pretty fun.

Yes, Star Ship did get a temporary resurrection in 1982, making it slightly easier to find than, say, Miniature Golf or Slot Machine. However, the re-issue box is rather unique, almost a bridge between the black-label and silver-label eras, which makes it that much more collectible.
