Tempest
Has anyone tried getting MAME to run on the PS3 via Linux? I know it used to have some serious performance issues, but I figured I'd check back and see if it's a viable alternative now. EricBall
When I last looked into this in January I determined it wasn't worth my effort, especially if I wasn't willing to install Linux on my PS3. What I wanted was a LiveCD so I wouldn't have to install more than just the bootloader. Plus, it had to be fail-safe so a reboot would get me back to the XMB. Although some people had done some work along those lines there wasn't anything which looked idiot-proof enough for me. Some notes I made at the time: Some documentation is included with these, worth a peek: SDL MAME v114u4 For PS3 (37.35 MB) http://www.ps3news.com/forums/downlo...o=file&id=3797 SDL MAME v111u4 For PS3 (18.84 MB) http://www.ps3news.com/forums/downlo...o=file&id=3738 AdvanceMAME .106 Binary For PS3 (9.50 MB) http://www.ps3news.com/forums/downlo...o=file&id=3547 For example, from one: Quote: Installation: Copy to /PS3/OTHEROS/ on a memory stick, CD-R etc, with the $ony otheros.self, and run "Install Other OS" from Settings > System Settings of the XMB. Then set default boot to OtherOS, reboot, and it will run! PS3 Other OS Installer: ps3news.com/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=3544 The otheros.bld gets installed to the PS3, and the cdr-test.iso can be burned or mounted as that is where it boots data from. http://rosemary.dyndns.org/software/ps3-sdlmame-readme http://www.bannister.org/forums/ubbthreads...47401#Post47401 http://pleasantfiction.ipower.com/bodega/v...hp?f=6&t=18 MAME LiveCD wishlist Include Petiboot http://ozlabs.org/~jk/projects/petitboot/ with the following enhancements: 1. wireless controller support 2. auto reboot to GameOS if no bootable options found, or after a short inactivity timeout. (WAF musthave) Strip the Linux install down to the minimum required for MAME, e.g. no network support Must be a true LiveCD - no harddrive partition required, e.g. VRAM as swap, save data to USB Boot to a front end Configure without needing Linux
liveinabin
All I'm waiting for is a real user-friendly way to play Robotron, Outrun and DoDonPachi on my PS3. Then my modded Xbox will be completely replaced. I can't help but feel that the speed isn't quite there yet under Linux. Outrun looked slow and sounded terrible on that Youtube video. cimerians
Oh I totally understand especially about the slowness on MAME. I dont think I've ever found a bootable solution. A software exploit would be so cool kind of like the Wii Twilight Hack.
