Ghostbuster! the first game i bought on my C64 when i was child!!! I had to sold my Colecovision :( to buy a C64 and that game!!

Impressive work again Daniel!

Is your secret project could be a Jukebox machine for Coleco? ;)

Even if the secret project is about music I will not tell you, because it's a secret project, so I will not tell you if you are right or wrong in your guesses.

Buying a Commodore 64 wasn't a bad idea at all. Considering the numerous games for this computer and the hours and hours and hours of programming I did with this particular computer, it was a must have (still a must have for the retro-computer-gaming fans).

I did small improvements in the previous version and extended it to more than 1.5 minutes

I have never regret to have buy a Commodore 64 , but i would love to be able to keep both!

I bought a C64 because playing game was not enough for me , i wanted to created my own games.

You new version of Ghostbuster is awesome! :)

And, you seem to have done a similar path in your life, a Commodore computer to make games is exactly what I did.. for me it was first a Commodore Vic-20 which doesn't have sprites and can also explain why I like characters graphics, bitmap splash screen that doesn't cheat by using sprites on it... kinda remembers me the time with the Commodore Vic-20. But I had a Commodore 64 as well, a 64C model to be exact, and it was one of the last one because it was the Commodore Amiga period and I was thinking if I should get a Commodore 64 or a Commodore 128 (that contains a Z80 processor which should gives me some pratices in Z80 assembler). I didn't regret either my decision and at that time I did a games compilation I called Daniel Vision... my dream of making ColecoVision games was manifesting even if Internet was not accessible for me and most of the people, in the period of BBS domination which I sadly didn't experiment.

the VIC 20 was really nice machine, i always loved it but never had one and still not have one :( (i collect old computers and consoles).

I had my C64 in 1984 (or end 1983) , no Amiga yet at this time. Few time after I dreamed to have a 128D but the time i have the money for Atari St and Amiga has been released. Of course i wanted an Amiga , but the Amiga 1000 was too expensive , so i bought a Atari 520 st (after having sold my C64 :() , but just the day i bought the Atari St , just after i bought a magazine and i read the Amiga 500 iwas released! I was very disapointed at this moment. But finally, i keep my St and i have been very happy with it. That was a more polyvalent machine than the Amiga, i think.

I made few games on C64 , un Pacman clone, a Decathlon clone , a Outlaw (Atari 2600) clone and few little shoot them up.

On St , i made Arkanoid clone (i called it Bizaroid!) , a kind of Ghost'n goblins but in future with robots and lazer.. , and few other things , like little demos in assembler.

In parallal of that i had a PC XT since 1984 where i did lot of f development too. I loved the GWBASIC and QBASIC! .(compared to the C64 basic...)

At that time, i didn't understand why on a machine so expensive (almost 15 time the price of my C64) the games was so ugly (CGA) .... :)

This GhostBusters music, when done, will be used in a ghost catching game I want to release this summer as a special for my friends of CCJVQ video game collectors club. Not wanting to make the same game as already done in the past... another one, something new. and to not confuse with the release of the new Ghostbuster game, I will call it something else, maybe Ghostblasters, I don't know.

My reply to Youki :

Well, you had exactly the same path than mine in some points... I did program many games with and without using sprites, with and without the multicolor mode for the characters, and I find out that sound was my big problem... anyway, I was able to make DANMAN, which I think you can guess what the name means, and the game was mostly as many ghost as I wanted and the mazes as huge as the screen... kinda extreme because I did not put special power items in some of them. One of my last programs for the Commodore 64 was (I think) a cards game I did not finish based on a real card game, I did scan all the cards and compress them wisely to fit the charset even if the pictures was so different and needed up to 2-3 charsets normally.

After Commodore 64, I jumped into PC jr world, not a Tandy 1000 which now I think waqs probably a better choice because of the sound chip similar to what coleco can do. anyway, We had a PC jr and I coded in BASICA, then after that in GWBASIC, then QBASIC on 486 PC computers. At that time, I bought the QuickBASIC 4.5 to be able to code and compile my own programs and this lead me to make my first games in 256 colors and my first tools for Coleco Vision projects. My first graphic tool was (I think) CVPHOTO which converted a BMP into Coleco format based on Marcel's Coleco library. And then appear ICVGM which was made in QuickBASIC 4.5 and supported the mouse, and I used it to make the graphic hacks of Purple Dinosaur Massacre called Killer Instinct and some others.

So, your programming experience is not so different than mine... so I wish your first Coleco game in cartridge will provide you a huge emotion as it gaves to me in the year 2000.

Hmmm... OK, I listened to it, and, excuse me saying it, but some things seem slightly wrong to me, though it's hard to describe which ones...

first, the "melody note" (not the bass note) during the intro seems to be an octave too high to me... should be an octave lower. Also, in this part you're not using the 3rd sound channel before the drums kick in... actually, I wonder how this works, since in that part it sounds like the higher melody line doesn't use the normal square wave waveform... how are you generating this?

Then, when the drums kick in, the bass line is slightly wrong. The last note should be lower by 2 or 4 half-steps (depending on the measure), and the note before it should always be lower by 4 half-steps.

At the same time, the short synthesizer notes are too long... they should be shorter (exactly one beat).

Then, the vibrato... normally, I think a vibrato should circle around the note that's supposed to be playing. In your version, however, the vibrato goes down from the note supposed to be playing and up again, but never above it. Thus the average frequency is lower than it should be. But you are not the only one having that mistake... I saw the released Amstrad CPC version of Ghostbusters back in 1985, and it had the same fault. The C-64 one, however, was correct in that respect as far as I remember.

OK, I meant to write more, but got caught up in a chat... but maybe you'll appreciate my feedback anyway.

Of course, the music is not perfect, and there are still improvements to do.

BUT... the vibrato seems ok to me... or the original music did the same mistake than me. Check it by yourself!

On PC 386 with a VGA card i used in MCGA mode under dos, i did lot of things too. A Pengo clone, a few plateform games, a simple "street fighter" , a game like dungeon master . and lot of other things on PC Pentium and + with Direct Draw , but it is less fun because no really hardware limitation.

So, your programming experience is not so different than mine... so I wish your first Coleco game in cartridge will provide you a huge emotion as it gaves to me in the year 2000.

I'm sure it will. I'm looking foward to be able to test my game on a real coleco.

Daniel, how could i use your music in my game (waiting i create mine , i would like to test with a music to have an idea how much memory it uses and how the game plays) . I use you SDC Kit , do i have to convert it to C format or can i use it directly like that?

Thanks

Youki

The data itself, the hexadecimal codes, can be taken "as is", but of course you need to add them in your project with the appropriate syntax to be compiled. The format I did use here is my own one, that my sound bank applet can understand and play.

I don't know if you did take a look to the special video I did about my thanks to my youtube subscribers and friends... well, the rom file and its source code are available and you can see how I added the music... it's not a straight forward method, but it can give you a clue.

http://newcoleco.dev-fr.org/p4129/2009-02-...erciements.html

I hope this will help... and a new version of the kit with SDCC is coming... - Note : I'm working on something else actually (not a music or devkit), then I will give some news in the appropriate topics.

YOU ROCK!!!! I love that Ghostbuster song for the Colecovision. Any chance you would make it a rom, so it can be played on an actual colecovision, using the multicart?

The following rom file is using this Ghostbuster music, with some minor modifications. Enjoy!

Absolutely Awesome. I loaded this rom on my Multi-Cart, and it sounds awesome. What a pleasant surprise that you even added a Static Image of a Ghostbuters Character with a nice background. I took a picture, sorry for poor quality, too light in my living room where I have my colecovision set up. My GF and I play it all the time, looking forward to showing her this when she gets home tonight. The only thing I would change if I where you Daniel is redo your text at the bottom, so it is more legible. You sure deserve to get credit for the awesome work.

I would love to be able to create games and music like you do, but I don't even know where to start. I looked over the software tools and am confused.

I have a lot of time, and if I had the know how I would try to make a Homebrew of Wild Western. Anyway here is a screenshot of the Ghostbuster Music Rom.

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this.

The fontset is corrupted in this picture, try to press reset and see if it changes anything, I will check back my codes and see if I did allow the evil NMI interruptions occurs during uploading the graphic data to the video ram.

If I can't fix this bug today, just ignore the display and enjoy the music.

I did expect graphic corruptions, I did always had graphic glitches and it's part of the joy to debug the project with a real system instead of using only emulators. And now, we have modified ColecoVision that uses RCA cables which doesn't react exactly the same as the original version for an unknow reason and it depends on which hack you did apply on your system. There are also the clones like Dina 2-in-1 which doesn't react the same as the original ColecoVision system too. I don't own a Dina system so I can't garanty my games work on that.

Oh well, enjoy the music!

I meant the very respectfully about the lettering, just thought you would want to know. I think it is awesome. I don't have a modded colecovision, and display is perfect when I play games on it. Just loaded it on my multi-cart and played it, even hit reset so I could hear it from the beginning again.

I fixed the bug, and it's something about my new devkit.

Try this

GhostBlaster v0.3b : ccjvq03b.zip

Note : This rom file is a little bit more smaller than the previous one because I'm currently working on optimizing my code to save memory space.

Enjoy!

Sorry..

It seems it is a bad year for Ghosts on Colecovision ... Ghost and Zombies and soon Ghost Blaster... not a good time to be a Ghost on Coleco! :D

I can wait to see more about Ghost Blaster! I will try the rom tonight on my console!!

I need to post in this section as well... the music is FANTASTIC! Can't wait to show off this cart to some friends.. the clear case and clear label are a nice touch too!

Thanks for 10 years of Coleco gaming Daniel!! Here's to another 10!!

Thank you very much! It's really appreciate!

And to all the programmers who are curious about this game, I've decided to release the source code as well. You can find the source code and the manual by doubledown at my blog newcoleco.dev-fr.org in the GhostBlaster topic. And based on the way I did program it, it can be modified for systems with more RAM and avoid the tweaking I had to do to use VRAM as extra RAM space.
