atari52 #1 Posted March 15, 2009 Does anyone have an Jaguar System for sale.at a fair price? I have looked on ebay for one,but they are crazy! I dont know what the deal is,but some jag's are going for more than a ps3.No joke! And what is up with AVP? a factory sealed AVP is going for close to $100.00 I don't get it! I just want a jag in good condition that dont cost a lot. everyone used to make jokes about Atari. All I heard was how bad the jag sucked, how it was not a true 64 bit system. But yet everyone wants one. I wish Atari would come back and kick sony and xbox's ass with a new system. It would have to be made in the USA! just like the jag! BuddyBuddies #2 Posted March 15, 2009 Jaguar Rules! Yes, the Jaguar's fanbase it growing and its becoming harder to find "cheap" Jaguars. The sealed AVP is very hard to find in sealed condition. The price increase in some auctions is because of the Jag CD, it alone goes for $200 or more...
atari52 #3 Posted March 15, 2009 Ya, I know that the jag cd's are going up in value.but I don't know why. There is not many games for it. I remember when the jag cd came out, everyone made fun of it. They said that it looked like a toilet bowl lid. I just don't understand, why Atari is looked down on, by so many people in the video game world, but yet some atari systems cost more than, these new systems. GOD! I wish atari would come out with a next gen. system.

I wish atari would come out with a next gen. system. Well the Jaguar CD is VERY limited and over 13 years old, many have died by now for several reasons. True there are only about 13 Atari released games for it,BUT over 100 cds for the Jaguar CD player, including the AWESOME hard as hell to get Gorf,Double feature #1, BIWN and more. The homebrew scene still works on cd titles aswell. With the growing interest in the Jaguar and because JAGUAR RULES, its getting harder to get em' cheap and working. ovalbugmann #5 Posted March 15, 2009 Ya, I know that the jag cd's are going up in value.but I don't know why. There is not many games for it. I remember when the jag cd came out, everyone made fun of it. They said that it looked like a toilet bowl lid. Yeah, it's reminisent of a toilet with the JaguarCD player and a cartridge plugged in but that doesn't mean the Jaguar CD is not a cool, and neat optical drive for the system. JagCDs are going up in value because for one, there are not many around and two, people know they are cool and demand is high - that dictates the $200+ price tag for it. Having firmware by Jeff Minter included is also a plus. Yeah, there's only 13 Official Atari released software pieces but that is just the beginning. Several cool homebrew/independent software titles have been sold & released, and it can play CD+Graphics discs too and of course audio CDs with the VLM display. It can be used for development also with a BJL Dev disc that can be burned to CD-R and ran for uploading to the Jag's RAM. There are several free homebrew games, demos, interesting software tools and applications that can be burned to CD-R or uploaded to RAM with the BJL disc. There's Cinepak Full Motion Video capabilities too - you can use Apple's Quicktime Pro to put your own videos on a CD-R and play it in the JaguarCD Player. JaguarCD has a proprietory disc format with compression attributes and can hold 790MB of data that will fit on a standard 700MB CD-R. I like top loading CD systems over the drawer style prevalent nowadays.
kevincal #6 Posted March 15, 2009 I would say just keep a SHARP eye on eBay. You will find a good deal on a Jag there eventually. Look for "newly listed" systems and you can snag some good BINs that way. The main reason the Jaguar was dissed so badly was because Atari had no money to market the Jaguar correctly or attract big name 3rd party developers and games. Back in the 90's, magazines were king. Since Atari didn't have any money, I'm guessing the magazines weren't given free games and swag from Atari, whereas surely Nintendo and Sega bribed these magazines with gifts in order to obtain good relations with magazines rating their games. The Jaguar really wasn't given a fair shot by the media... Only a select couple gaming mags out of dozens gave the Jag fair coverage and scores. There really are a lot of good games on the Jag. But a quick look around the internet will find you most "ignorant" people claiming the Jag only has 2 good games, Tempest and AvP... When in reality, there is more like 20-30 good cart games on the Jag out of the 44 cart games released in it's first lifespan which ended in early 1996. Of course dozens of more carts and CD have come out since then. :-) The Jaguar commununity is one of the best among classic gaming systems. And the Jaguar CD... Ya, it is overpriced, but it is genuinely rare as not that many were made and it was released only several months before Atari folded. The VLM is almost worth the price of admission alone. It is REALLY cool... There are several good games on the Jag CD as well. Plus a lot of cool homebrew games with an 8 bit feel. Graphics aren't so great, but the gameplay makes them fun. They usually have rockin' music too! Painter and Atomic come to mind in this regard. Gorf Classic as well. Just keep an eye on ebay, as well as scour the Market place here at Atari Age. Some other good marketplaces to keep an eye on are the ones at Digital Press, Neo-Geo & Jaguar Sector II.
