S1500 #1 Posted March 19, 2009 Anyone heard of this? China-only system. Maybe I should have looked for one of these when I was in Taiwain. Anyways, here's a page about it.
Wickeycolumbus #2 Posted March 19, 2009 There was a thread about this not too long ago, but before that, I did not know it existed.
Spazmonkey #3 Posted March 19, 2009 I'm almost positive it is from Taiwan. I saw one for sale not too long ago, CIB, it for $400, and that was just for the console. I hear finding games for this thing is next to impossible.
DeathAdderSF #4 Posted March 20, 2009 (edited) Anyone heard of this? Unfortunately. The Super A'can was Taiwan's first (and only) completely unique and original video game console (i.e. it isn't a clone of another machine). Manufactured and released by UMC in 1995, the A'can quickly lost its maker over USD$6M as it completely and horribly failed on the market. Why? Because out of the 12 games released for the machine, most of them are absolute poo. Collecting for the A'can isn't the easiest thing in the universe. I own several systems and a complete set of games, but only because I have the right connections. One of the games, Rebel Star, is actually quite rare according to the very few A'can collectors I spoke with in Taiwan; in fact, some of them didn't believe that the game was released at all until I provided them with a scan of the cover art. For some reason I decided to bring an A'can system and four games along with me to France for 2007's Retro-gaming Connexion. You can view some photos from the event if you so desire. No one at the show had ever heard of it before, so most of them were pretty excited -- that is, until I turned it on, causing them all to recoil in horror. If any of you want more information about this tragic machine, the Super A'can entry on Wikipedia is actually informative, unlike the 'vanillaicemedia' page you linked to. This is mostly because I wrote the majority of information found in the Wikipedia entry. Yes, ashamed of it as I may be, I am a rabid A'can enthusiast. As you ponder that, however, keep in mind that I'm also obsessed with absolutely worthless machines like the Watara Supervision and the Bit Corp. Gamate. So don't get excited. The A'can isn't good, and it isn't fun, and it will make you cry. Basically what I'm saying is that if you had any thought to ever pick up an A'can and some games - erase that thought from your mind right now. Seriously. You'll spend lots of money trying to collect the games, and in the end all you'll have to show for it will be sadness and guilt. Blur2040 #5 Posted March 20, 2009 They're not that hard to find. All you have to do is make an active effort to hunt one down and someone usually has one. In fact, most of the time you don't even have to even ask around. Interest in them has risen in the past 3 years or so...so you can find the occasional seller getting rid of one on eBay. Price will kill you though. The system is rare. Made rarer than it should be because many of the consoles were sold as scrap. That how I got mine. All I have is a loose console sans games and controllers (FYI, if anybody wants to sell me a game or controller at a non insane price, let me know...). Really though. Avoid. Bad games. Bad bad games. Bad bad bad bad games. Yeah, OK, you don't care. OK. Well, you're probably going to pay around $200+ with shipping for a console, controller, with a game or two. Which, by the way, suck. If you plan on owning all of the consoles out there, make it the last one you buy.
