The first game you bought?

Recommended Posts

The first game I bought with money given to me to spend as I chose was Night Driver for the Atari 2600. For some reason I was chomping at the bit to pay $25 for it. Gah, what a mistake. But I was young enough to lie to myself and tell myself it was a brilliant purchase.

The first games I bought with money from an actual job were Sonic the Hedgehog (which came with the Genesis) and Star Control. Those were much better choices, and were so good they got me back into console videogames after the dark age of Nintendo.

I no longer have the original Night Driver or Sonic the Hedgehog carts I owned back then, but I do have carts of each in my collection. I still have the original Star Control cart I purchased back then.

Mine had to be either Space Invaders or possibly Outer Space (Starship) I can't remember which ones I bought and which ones my folks bought me. I got Superman with my VCS for Christmas 1978. I still have them both today, including the Gatefold box that Outer Space and Combat came in. (When I trashed my boxes, I kept only those two.) :ponder:

As someone else said, this thread does bring back memories. A lot of what I got was from a Thrifty Drugstore that is now a petSmart that is near my current home, and every time we go to that shopping center for Sushi or Groceries, I think about all those colorful boxes lined up on the shelf behind the photo counter, right next to the dipping counter where we got those odd shaped ice cream cones. That's where I got Space Invaders.

We got a few at the Sears too, which was in Los Arcos Mall that was torn down and is now a technology center.

I honestly can't be sure but it may have been Arcadia for our 16K Sinclair Spectrum. I had a 2600 already but the games were too expensive for me to buy on my own. I remember buying Arcadia from WHSmiths in 1983 sometime for £5.50, which was way more affordable.

but mom put the system and the dozen carts we had in a yard sale for $20 (?!?!?!) one Spring weekend in 1985 when I was away at a Boy Scout camp.

Fortunately, you could likely replace it for about that still today in 2009! O2 stuff is incredibly cheap compared to any other system I can think of. I wouldn't be surprised, with a little effort, you could replace it for not much more than that including shipping! I know it's not the same as having your original stuff, but at least she didn't sell a Vectrex with all the boxed games for $20.

Are you talking ebay prices? I would like to find an O2 system but I don't have paypal so ebay is pretty much out of the question for me. I should post a want ad on the forums here but I'm rather broke at the moment so I probably won't.

If you don't want to spend the $ now, just wait... they're easy to find and I'm sure they will be for a long while. And they're very cheap whether on ebay or here or most places. Several have changed hands here recently in the marketplace with large lots of boxed carts etc for under $100 -- or maybe they didn't even sell, I can't recall offhand. If you just want a working console with a few games, you could probably find it for around $20. The thing about O2 stuff, is often the shipping will cost about as much as the items themselves.

Yep, all though, you would be able to get one for $20 with a few games. Shipping would be at least that. So $40 at least.

My parents bought me and my two sisters an Atari 2600 for Christmas and it was ALL we got (back then $200+ was a lot of money). I think the first game I bought was Space Invaders. My sisters eventually lost interest, but not me. I played the crap out of that game for years. I used to put the whole system in the box and then put that in a paper sack and haul the whole mess over to my friend's house. There were about four or five of us, and we told everyone we were studying, but we were hooking it up to his basement TV and playing video games for hours! We made the thing portable! Good thing we were smart and got good grades anyway. ;-)

Remember the game on SI where the aliens were invisible and flashed on only when you hit one?! We used to have invisible SI tournaments because we were all so good at it otherwise.

Our system is still at my folks house, but now all of a sudden my stupid sisters won't let me just take it. They wanted me to PAY THEM for their share of it! The thing is worn out anyway (two of the buttons stick) so I told my kids I wanted one for Christmas and my 15yr old son bought me a sweet one off of ebay. Good times are here again.

Keep Playing!

Rob

First game I bought with my own money was Super Mario Bros 3. I still remember waiting for it to come out, with the yellow box in my hands, giddy, the whole drive home. Unfortunately, I sold the game... I have no idea where my boxes went though, I know I didnt sell those with the carts. Still trying to find them all.

The first game I ever purchased with my own money was Street Fighter II for the SNES. I worked crappy hours pushing carts at some supermarket but it was well worth it!

Star Raiders and E.T. for the 2600. Got them in 1986 or 1987 when Kay-Bee Toys were getting rid of their Atari stuff to make room for NES stuff.

I think Mortal Kombat 2. One of those games that you had to use your own money (behind your parent's back) to get :)

I remember buying that game. The day after official release, a friend of mine was buying the game and he grabbed an extra ticket which he gave me later that day. I already had the money saved up, so I got my mom to take me to the same store and bought the last one. All the tickets were gone except the illicitly gained one in my pocket.

Pushing carts was my favorite part of that job. I liked the physical activity and nobody micromanaging me. Bagging groceries was boring and I didn't like talking to customers and cashiers.

The girls especially wanted to get out of cart duty and I didn't mind letting them have the social side of the job.

The hardest experience I had was collecting carts in heavy snow to make way for a plow. It was hilariously difficult, and yet I remember it fondly. :)
