Looking for good multimeter

I got mine at Rat Shack. They used to have a decent one similar to a Fluke 77BN for about $50. It went up to $60 or $70 when I got my second one after I got stupid and broke the first one.

That was more than ten years ago, though. They don't sell the same style anymore, so I've made sure that mine has lasted this long.

If they still have it, it'll be one of the ones that's got a rubber case around it. It might be a little higher than $50, but the extra money would be well spent.

Mine is very close to this Extech model, and I've had good experience with Extech tools. The main difference is that mine looks twelve years older, 'cause it is, and it has a thick rubber shield around it.

I have a Wavetek DM5XL that I have used for years, and it works great. Strangely, I can't seem to find a link for one on sale.

But it looks like they made on in orange (mine is gray).

Otherwise I use cheapies, and expect them to break. The cheapies work great as dedicated guages.

Wavetek Meterman 37XR is a very good meter I've used for about 5 years but you'll be hard pressed to find one for $50. Though they do make some more basic models closer to that range which can be decent. Keep an eye out for the Wavetek and Fluke dealers, every so often they clear out the warehouse and last of the old models do go on some really good sales.
